Featherwing- an Indian woman not born in the tribe, she sometimes struggles trying to understand her past and what the future holds for her.

Stormring- A strong Indian man who is always out to help the tribe, he is Littleriver’s wife.

Swifttail- Stormring’s younger sister

Puntball- 2 years younger the Swifttail

Skyball- The youngest of Quickfoot’s children

Quickfoot- the Tribe’s leader, He believes Featherwing should try and become someone special

Lionvoice- Quickfoot’s wife

Littleriver- A one time hero, now Stormring’s wife

Kitpuddle- An innocent cat that warns the Indians of danger that is near

Waterdance- Featherwing’s kindhearted daughter

Rainflag- an Indiana woman

Fishchance- Likes Featherwing

Lapfoot- A crippled Indian that is Swifttail’s boyfriend.

Babbling Brook- Stormring’s daughter

Rising Moon- Stormring’s son

Redbird- An old red bird and a friend to the tribe

Jack- A criminal visiting the village, He is out only to make trouble

Alice- Jack’s very talkative helper

Sly- An evil old witch

Burst- Sly’s best friend a ghost.

Rattle- Sly’s servant, a skeleton.

Lakesong- Waterdance’s 8 year old daughter

Lacewood- Littleriver’s 10 year old daughter

Ghostwood- Rainflag and Puntball’s 7 year old son

Foothole- you have met him without knowing it!

Fishhit- Past traitor, Featherwing’s past life (yes he has come back)

Windsky- Skyball’s 6 year old daughter

(Littleriver stands up.)

Littleriver- In fact I’m going back to camp. I’ll spend some time with Quickfoot and Lionvoice.

Stormring- Good, then we are free to go.

(Featherwing and Stormring walk away together.)

Featherwing- you did not want her to know the truth?

Stormring- No, I didn’t, she is so softhearted, I was afrid it would make her even sadder. Now come on I want to find my children.

(Stormring starts to run.)

Featherwing- Hold on, I’m not as young as I once was.

(Stormring slows down and waits for her.)

Stormring- So who do you think kidnapped my children? It can’t be Fishhit.

Featherwing- yes but there are his past allies to think about, like Sly!

Stormring- That’s where we will star, so who knows where Sly lives?

Featherwing- Did you have to bring that up?

(Stormring walks over to Featherwing and puts his hand on her shoulder.)

Featherwing- You don’t know who that is? The person that almost caused you to die.

Stormring- I don’t… Fishhit!! But he’s dead how can that be him?

(Featherwing and Stormring jump into the bushes as Fishhit walks by. When he passes they come out.)

(Stormring takes off after Fishhit.)

Featherwing- Wait for me!

(Featherwing takes off after him.)

(Babbling Brook, Rising Moon, and Lacewood are tied up in an old cave. Sly enters.)

Sly- Now, now my pretties. Your days with me are just beginning; today you learn how to be my slaves. Ha, Ha, Ha.

Rising Moon- No, I will not work for you.

(Sly hits him on the head with a rock and he falls to the ground.)

Babbling Brook- What did you do to my twin brother.

(Sly throws a rock at her too and she falls to the ground.)

Sly- Now, now little one I will untie you. Don’t make me regret it.

(Sly unties Lacewood. Lacewood throws a rock at Sly and Sly falls to the ground.)

Lacewood- Regret it now witch.

(Lacewood runs off.)

(We are back in the woods with Featherwing and Stormring.)

Featherwing- Stormring, we have been following Fishhit for hours and are not getting anywhere.

Stormring- We are further then we were before

(They continue walking.)

Stormring- Look Featherwing a cave.

Featherwing- Yes a cave, that’s nothing special. We had to have passed 20 caves already.

Stormring- But my children are in there and so is Fishhit. Let’s go in!

(Featherwing and Stormring enter the cave.)

Stormring- It’s dark in here.

Featherwing- It’s not that dark, in fact, I do not even think it is dark. I mean there are candles on the walls.

Featherwing- Look Stormring, he’s right in there.

(They enter a larger cave that flooding with light because of a hole cut in the ceiling.)

Featherwing- Oh my, how can this be?

Stormring- What do you see?

Featherwing- Look, two Fishhit’s.

Stormring- What?! Ahhhhhh, they’re multiplying, they’re multiplying.

(Stormring takes off.)

Featherwing- So much for that.

Littleriver- Quickfoot!! Featherwing and Stormring are not back yet.

Quickfoot- I have noticed that too Littleriver and it worries me.

Littleriver- I don’t want to loose Stormring too. If that happens my whole family will be gone.

(Rainflag walks up.)

Rainflag- Don’t worry, they should be back soon. Maybe they just got lost.

Littleriver- Featherwing get lost?

Rainflag- It was just a thought!

Quickfoot- No, Featherwing knows the woods to well to get lost. Something must have happened.

Littleriver- But what?

Quickfoot- That’s what I’m trying to find out. Rainflag please put a search party together.

Rainflag- On my way.

(Rainflag leaves.)

(Fishhit leaves)

Fishhit- I am a twin. When Sly gave birth to two boys she decided to raise one herself and give one to her husband Clawnet. I am the one Clawnet raised. Sly raised my brother Foothole, who became evil. That one that was in here was Foothole. When we had Waterdance Foothole kidnapped me. I have been here ever since.

Featherwing- But that means. . .

Fishhit- Foothole burnt down the village and tried to take over. I have always loved you Featherwing.

(They hug)

Featherwing- We have to get out of here. Here, let me untie you.

(Featherwing unties Fishhit and they leave through the hole in the roof)

Fishhit- Thank you my love.

Featherwing- Your welcome.

(They hug)

Stormring- I have got to find my children. I have got to find my children!

Stormring- We will but first of all, where’s Lacewood

Rising Moon- She outwitted the witch and took of. We have no idea where she is.

Stormring- Ok, first I will get you home, then I’ll go back out and find Lacewood. Come on sweeties.

(The three link arms and walk away.)

(We are now looking in on the tribe as Stormring, Rising Moon, and Babbling Brook arrive.)

Rising Moon- We’re back

(Littleriver rushes forward.)

Littleriver- Where’s Lacewood?

Stormring- That’s what I have to find out. First I thought I would drop these teenagers off!

(Quickfoot walks forward.)

Quickfoot- Greetings Stormring

(He looks around.)

Quickfoot- Where’s Featherwing?

Stormring- You mean she did not come back yet?

Lionvoice- She was not with you?

Waterdance- Quickfoot do something, she’s my mother!!

Scene 2: The Trouble Begins

Featherwing- Do you have any idea where Sly lives?

Fishhit- I don’t, we will just have to walk around and hope luck is with us.

(There is a gasp from behind them and Skyball and Windsky walk up.)

(The whole tribe but Quickfoot enters.)

Stormring- Featherwing don’t do this to me

Featherwing- Wait, I can explain, it’s not what you think, Fishhit is still our best warrior. Just give us a chance.

Lionvoice- We can’t give 2nd chances to traitors.

Featherwing- But we’re not traitors

(The whole tribe but Waterdance leaves.)

Waterdance- Why did you do this? Don’t we have enough traitors already?

(She pauses.)

Waterdance- I guess it runs in the family.

(Waterdance leaves.)

Featherwing- No don’t

(She falls to her knees.)

Fishhit- I’m sorry Featherwing, I truly am.

Featherwing- Maybe luck isn’t with us.

Waterflower- A traitor, no she can’t be a traitor!

Swifttail- But she is

Waterflower- I just can’t believe it, can you?

Swifttail- Not really and with Quickfoot sick too. Everything is falling apart!!

Lapfoot- Don’t upset him Stormring; it could only make him worse.

Stormring- Even so he has a right to know.

(Stormring walks over to Quickfoot’s tent and knocks.)

Quickfoot- Come on in

(Stormring walks in.)

Stormring- I can’t believe Featherwing is a traitor!

Quickfoot- A traitor, hardly? Featherwing is going to be our hero, I can feel it.

Stormring- Yeah right, you’re sick Quickfoot and not right in your mind.

Quickfoot- Even though I am sick, I know what I am saying. Redbird has been talking to me.

Stormring- Is he with you now?

(Redbird flies up.)

Redbird- I am always around Stormring. Now listen closely to what I have to say. Danger is around the corner and for two children the end may be near. Someone most be true to their heart if the tribe is to pull though. I think you can guess who that person is. Quickfoot already knows. Also one you thought was bad is good. Instead there is a new enemy that looks very much like a friend.

Stormring- Don’t talk in riddles, I can’t understand their meaning.

Redbird- Someone will emerge that you do not know about. This someone is evil but looks like a long lost friend.

Stormring- Fishhit? So Featherwing was telling the truth. But how can someone that is evil look like Fishhit?

Redbird- That is what you have to discover. If I tell you any more the future will change. Look for your friend and her husband and then just follow your heart.

Stormring- I will, I swore

Redbird- Now my friend, turn around. Quickfoot’s life is about to end. Listen to your heart, Stormring, and follow it.

(Redbird leaves.)

Stormring- Quickfoot?

Quickfoot- My son, my love and my friend. Featherwing is not a traitor and so I name her leader in my place. Promise my, no matter what happens, not to help Featherwing until the tribe believes in her again.

Stormring- I can’t do that!

Quickfoot- If you can’t Lacewood will die. Don’t fear, the tribe will believe in her when the time is right. Redbird told me himself.

Stormring- Ok, I promise. But how will I do it, will Featherwing die before the tribe believes in her again. Do I have to choose between her and Lacewood? Quickfoot, Quickfoot!

(Stormring seats back.)

Stormring- Live on in heaven my beloved father. There’s so much to think about, so much.

Stormring- Featherwing, should we go find her?

Lapfoot- We can’t let traitors rule us!

Rainflag- I think Stormring should be leader.

Stormring- But I can’t. Quickfoot wanted Featherwing; I wouldn’t be able to do it!

Littleriver- Of course you could

Lapfoot- We will bow to your wishes

Rainflag- And listen to your every word!

Puntball- After all big brother, who wants traitors to rule us.

Stormring- No one, but what if we were wrong.

Swifttail- Don’t be silly, we know what we have see. Now Stormring what are your orders?

Kitpuddle- Greetings, Redbird has sent me. He says that you most go to the clearing in the woods if all is to be well.

Fishhit- Why would that be?

Kitpuddle- Redbird did not say.

Featherwing- But I trust him with all my heart and will do just what he says.

Lakesong- I’m going to go out hunting

Waterdance- All by yourself?

Lakesong- I’ll be okay, Featherwing showed me how to know which path to take. We were very close Featherwing and I.

Waterdance- Ok go, but promise me you will be careful.

Lakesong- I’ll be careful Mom, I promise.

(Lakesong enters the woods.)

Sly- Greetings children

(Sly nods and Burst, Rattle, Jack and Alice enter.)

Lakesong- Fishhit’s allies

Sly- Not Fishhit’s allies, we are Foothole’s allies. Fishhit is too softhearted.

(Foothole enters.)

Foothole- Remember me?

Lakesong- Your Fishhit!

Foothole- No my name is Foothole

(Fishhit and Featherwing enter.)

Fishhit- No I am the true Fishhit

Lacewood- What? How?

Featherwing- No time for questions, come on!!

(Featherwing graps the children and hurries them to safety just as Sly throws a rock at them. It falls were they were only seconds before!)

Lacewood- That was close

(Stormring runs up.)

Stormring- Lacewood, you’re safe.

(He hugs his daughter.)

Stormring- Featherwing, forgive me

Featherwing- You’re forgiven

(They hug.)

Stormring- Quickfoot’s dead, Featherwing he’s gone.

Featherwing- Quickfoot! So who is leader now?

Stormring- You should be but they did not want you to even though you are who Quickfoot wanted. Well I’m leader too them but your leader to me. Come on let’s go set this straight.

(Behind them the tribe enters cheering.)

Featherwing- Listen up all of you, listen up. Fishhit will always be wearing a red necklace. That is how you will tell him apart from his intinal twin Foothole. Now come, there is much we have to do. Sly is sure to attack again.

Scene 3: Foothole and his Allies

(The whole tribe is gathered around Featherwing and Quickfoot’s body.)

Featherwing- Losing Quickfoot is hard on all of us, he was the best leader anyone ever had, he was brave and fearist. He held us though the bad times and enjoyed the good. Without him this tribe will never be the same. We gather here today to say our last good-byes to the loveable leader.

Windsky- Can’t Kitpuddle go back in time and rescue him?

(Kitpuddle walks over.)

Kitpuddle- Yes I can go back in time but I can not change the fact that he was sick. The same thing would happen.

Featherwing- Death is a part of life. We are born, we live and we die. Nothing can save the cycle. We feel the pain of loss, cry a lot, and then move on. It is going to happen to everyone. Now let’s say our good-byes to Quickfoot.

All- Good-bye our loveable leader, our brave leader, our strong leader and our friend. We hope your soul will live forever among us.

Featherwing- Just keep a weapon on you to be on the safe side. I don’t want any of you to die. This tribe means too much to me.

(As Featherwing speaks Foothole enters with his allies.)

Waterdance- Look, its Foothole

Featherwing- Okay Tribe of the Rainbow, it looks like we are going to have a battle.

Puntball- We will fight to the death

Rainflag- I hope it does not come to that.

Fishhit- There’s no time to talk, let’s fight.

(Skyball and Burst fight one to one. In the end Skyball kills Burst and he falls.)

(Fishhit runs up.)

Fishhit- I can not let you kill her, mother.

Sly- I hate to do this but it looks like I have to!

(Sly drives her knife into the flesh right below Fishhit’s heart.)

Fishhit- My life is over Featherwing, yours is not. I want you to forget about about me and move on in your life.

Featherwing- I can’t, we are having another child.

Fishhit- Then the child needs you. Bye Featherwing, I hope we meet again in heaven.

(Fishhit dies.)

Featherwing- Where’s Kitpuddle

Rainflag- Foothole killed her.

Featherwing- We are losing, call off the battle so that no one else dies.

(The battle ends and Featherwing walks off alone.(

Featherwing- We are gathered here again to bid good-bye to another friend. Fishhit died to save Skyball’s life. The tribe will always honor him for as long as the world exists. May the god’s honor him.

Lionvoice- Of course the God’s will honor, my child. In life he was willing to place his life and beliefs below the tribe. Few are willing to do that.

Puntball- Come on all of you, we’re wasting time!

(Stormring and Waterdance come forward and bury Fishhit. The tribe comes up one by one and each plants a flower over him.)

Featherwing- Good-bye my love, may we meet again in the sky.

Stormring- Come Featherwing, Fishhit would not want us to give him too much grief.

Featherwing- I was just saying good-bye. Who will know when I will join him again.

Stormring- Hopefully it’s a while yet. You know I’m going to search for Foothole. When I find him he’ll be sorry he ever killed Fishhit.

Foothole- I don’t want to be evil but I must. Sly controls my brain and makes me do things I don’t want to do. She is going to make me kill you but I came to stop that. Kill me, kill me now and save your life. Please Featherwing you are my sister-in-law, I can’t watch you die!

Featherwing- I can’t kill you, no, you remind me too much of Fishhit.

Scene 4: A Fight is Near

Stormring- Foothole is good? But how?

Lionvoice- Did I hear you right?

Stormring- If you were listening before you would know!

Skyball- Don’t be hard on her brother, she’s getting old

Windsky- Getting Old? She is old!

Puntball- So Featherwing, what do we do? Kill him?

Featherwing- I already told you, we will not kill him. Instead we will post guards and when the time comes we will keep him from commenting evil.

Fishchance- Wouldn’t it be better to look for him.

Featherwing- It would but then Sly will know that we know of the attack. It is safer this way.

(Fishchance moves away followed by the rest of the tribe, it is then that Sly and her allies appear.)

Featherwing- Turn around, Sly and her allies are here!

(The tribe turns and meets Sly and her allies. Foothole is with them.)

(Foothole walks towards them.)

Foothole- I can’t do this, I can’t

Featherwing- What can’t you do?

Foothole- How do I live with a foot in both sides?

Rattle- Traitor!

(Sly casts a spell at Foothole and he kneels and cries.)

(Foothole shakes his head.)

Skyball- No, this can’t be!

Featherwing- Hush it’s not his fault. He wants us you can see it in his eyes.

Sly- So if you are so evil kill Featherwing.

Foothole- Never

Sly- What did you say?

Foothole- No I won’t do it!

Sly- You are a traitor, so I’ll kill you like one.

(Sly lunges at Foothole!)

Featherwing- No!!

(Featherwing lunges forward grapping Foothole and rolling down the hill.)

Foothole- You saved my life!

Featherwing- Never mind that pull out your knife and fight with us. It’s time you freed yourself of that spell.

Foothole-I love you Featherwing

(They hug.)

Featherwing- As do I. Now go, and hurry!

(They both take off up the hill to find both sides deep in battle.)

Foothole- What should I do?

Featherwing- Follow me, there is sure to be an answer to your troubles.

Foothole- I can’t do it!

Featherwing- Of course you can, now stop wasting time!

(The two slip out of the bushes into the battle.)

Featherwing- Do not fear, I am ok!

(The tribe cheers once then goes back into the battle.)

Foothole- I fight for the tribe

Sly- Yeah but I’ll get back at you

(Swifttail runs up.)

Swifttail- Featherwing what do we do? We’ll losing

Puntball- Yes Featherwing we are and Lionvoice is dead.

Featherwing- No, that can’t be

Swifttail- But Rattle id also dead!

Foothole- Rattle? I was always fond of that skeleton.

Featherwing- So, it’s Sly, Jack, and Alice against all of us?

Puntball- That’s right

Featherwing- Then it’s only 3 of them! How can we be losing against 3 of them?

Swifttail- I don’t know, but we are.

Featherwing- Ok here’s what I want you to do. Make a circle around them and close in so that you surround them and trap them against the cliff.

Swifttail- So in other words we corner them.

Featherwing- You could say that.

Puntball- But that’s not fair!

Skyball- I think it is!

Swifttail- You heard all that?

(Skyball nods.)

Featherwing- Skyball, please organize this attack.

Skyball- On my way Featherwing

(Skyball runs off.)

Puntball- This is not going to work Featherwing.

Featherwing- I know that’s were you come in. When they corner them Sly and her allies will have to come up with a plan fast. Their only way out is to climb the cliff. If they do that they will escape. But the four of us will be up there waiting for them. There we will fight them one for one.

Swifttail- We don’t stand a chance!

Featherwing- Don’t underestimate my fighting skills. Come on we have only a few minutes to get up there.

(The four run off.)

Waterflower- Featherwing where are you? Skyball where’s Featherwing

Skyball- No clue

Waterflower- The attack failed, Sly and her allies are climbing the cliff

Skyball- How?

Waterflower- No one knows

Skyball- Look someone’s up there!

(Skyball points to the cliff.)

Waterflower- This is a dream come true.

Featherwing- Puntball and Swifttail I want you to each take a side. Foothole and I will guard the middle.

Puntball- There’s no time Featherwing; they are almost to the top.

(The four stand there waiting, then as Sly, Jack, and Alice reach the top they draw their knifes.)

Jack- Sly this is a trap

Sly- I know that already Jack

Jack- Then do something

Sly- Shut up you…

Alice- Sly watch out!!

(The four Indians attack Sly and her allies, a battle has begun. After a while the Indians seem to be winning.)

Jack- Sly we have to pull back if we want to survive.

Sly- Don’t dare challenge me. No one ever challenges Sly!

(Sly wacks Jack across the face meaning to punish him but instead she hits too hard and Jack falls down the cliff.)

Alice- What have you done, Jack, no, Jack!

(Alice runs down the hill on one side of the cliff. Sly stays up on the cliff ready to fight some more.)

Foothole- You can’t mean to take on all of us Sly?

Sly- That’s why I ask you to join your mother, Foothole. I trained you in the ways of evil, its who you are, nothing can change that.

Featherwing- That is not true. Everyone can choose their own path.

Sly- You are wrong, always wrong.

Featherwing- I should kill you but I don’t want to do that. You and Alice can leave if you wish.

(Alice walks up.)

Alice- No I’m not going with Sly. I’m going back to the village where I was born. There I will live out the rest of my life.

Featherwing- Do what you want, just both of you leave

(Sly and Alice leave.)

Swifttail- Good, now we can have peace.

Rainflag- If I know Sly she’ll be back

(Featherwing runs up.)

Featherwing- Foothole I need to talk to you.

Foothole- What, is something wrong?

Featherwing- All of you leave!

(Everyone but Foothole and Featherwing leave.)

Featherwing- It’s great news Foothole. I’ll give you one guess.

Foothole- Is Sly dead?

Featherwing- Wrong, oh Foothole, I’m having a baby, another baby.

Foothole- A baby?

Featherwing- In a few months oh isn’t it great. A new life is going to be created.

(They hug, and then Foothole leaves for the forest.)

(Foothole kneels by the river and puts his feet in. Smiling he leans back on a tree truck.)

(Foothole closes his eyes, but he falls asleep and slips into the water were he drowns.)

(It is the next morning.)

Featherwing- Littleriver, where’s Foothole?

Littleriver- I don’t know. Why is he missing?

Featherwing- If it’s a boy I’ll name him Birdflame.

Littleriver- That’s your grandfathers’ name!

Featherwing- That’s why I like it, it seems to bring back memories.

Littleriver- Oh no

Featherwing- What is it? No…

(Featherwing takes off down the hill and towards the river.)

Littleriver- I’m sorry Featherwing.

Featherwing- Nothing is ever going to work out; everyone I love is being taken from me. No please he can’t be dead. Why is everyone dying all I want is to live a normal life, is that too much to want? Is it?

Littleriver- Come let’s get his body back to camp.

Featherwing- You go I just want to be alone. This river is the ruin of our tribe.

(Littleriver leaves, leaving Featherwing alone.)

Scene 6: To the last Breath

(Featherwing walks back to the camp a month later holding a baby girl.)

Lapfoot- Featherwing you’re back.

Featherwing- Waterdance please take her. I named her Loveheart for her love will bring the tribe back together.

Stormring- Featherwing is something wrong

Featherwing- Everything is wrong.

(Featherwing walks up the cliff and kneels by its edge.)

Featherwing-

Everyday we seem to grow further apart

Everyday seems like hundreds of years
