Chapter Six – I Believe You
Austin left soon after, and Nathaniel came out of his room, sulking. He flopped down on the couch beside me.
“How on Earth did he make you go?” He asked me.
“He’s a great talker. He charms people easily,” I replied.
Nate remained silent for a while, and I took a glance at him. He looked really moody. I can’t stand people being moody because of something I said.
I moved closer to him. “I am sorry, OK?”
Nate broke into a huge grin. “There are only two things now which will make me really happy.”
I furrowed my eyebrows. “Which two?”
“The first,” he replied. “Is this.” Before I realised what was happening, Nate placed his hand on my chin, and he tilted it to face his. He kissed me deeply, his lips rubbing softly on mine. Nate removed his hands on my chin, and he rubbed my back up and down with his hands, his lips never leaving mine.
He was such a good kisser that I had to kiss him back. He bit at my lower lip, requesting for access. I opened my mouth a little, and he slid his tongue into my mouth. Our tongues danced together passionately, and he pulled back sometime after.
He grinned coyly at me. “The second is that you will take my money, and use it for the payment of the trip.”
“I-I c-can’t,” I stuttered. “It’s your money.” I shook my head firmly.
“It is my money, but I can spend it on my girlfriend, right?” he replied. “The only thing is that I can’t take out the money and pay for myself. It’s one of the top rules in The Cupid Effect,” he added.
I didn’t really want to depend on anybody for finances. But Nate was right, he IS my boyfriend, and he can pay for my trip.
“All right,” I replied, defeated. Nate smiled, elated, and kissed my cheek. Wait a minute. When had I start thinking him as my boyfriend?
During these few days, I had started thinking Nate of my boyfriend. He is really thoughtful and caring, the kind of guy I would really like. I was even inspired by his ice-cream waffles, and I had made a nice outfit out of it, and submitted it into the competition.
I sat down on the dining table, savoring the sunny side-up Nate made for me. He slid into the seat beside me.
“Do you want to go to the amusement park today?” he asked me. “You know, the newly-opened one at the other side of town.”
I had come across the brochure of the new amusement park, Sweet Escapes, and I had taken a liking to it. There were really thrilling rides, and all I would like in my life now, is excitement.
I nodded and finished up the breakfast. Nate smiled and ruffled my hair. I wiped my wiped my mouth with a Kleenex, and my ring tone started blasting the whole room.
Without looking at the Caller ID, I quickly answered it.
“Scarlett?” the other end said.
“Yeah. You are?” I asked, walked into my room. It was a disaster. Everytime I got into the inspired mode, I will ignore the tidiness of the room, and it will always be filled with drafts and sketches.
“This is Austin.”
I froze. I stopped picking up the papers, and flopped down on my bed. “Is anything the matter?”
“Well,” Austin paused. “I was wondering if you would like to go the Sweet Escapes with me. You know the newly-opened amusement park?”
I slapped my forehead. Shit. There are two guys asking me to the same place.
“It’s not like a date, it’s more of a, a brother-sister kind of thing, yeah?” he quickly added. Why does he have to ruin my dreams everytime?
“I would love to, but I have something on,” I replied.
“You have a date with whatsisname?” Austin inquired.
“I am sorry,” was all I replied. I hung up the phone after, and change into a black printed tee and a pair of demin shorts.
I nodded, and adjusted the strap of my handbag. Again, I nearly bumped into someone I missed.
“Sorry,” I mumbled.
“Scarlett Hewitt,” the man said. I looked up, and horror of horrors, it was Austin. What is he doing here?! Trauma, trauma, trauma. The last thing I expected is for him to catch Nate and me out together.
“Hi?” I said meekly.
“Where are you going?” He asked me.
“Sweet Escapes!” Nate cut in before I could say anything.
Austin raised an eyebrow. “Can I join? I can drive all of us there?”
Again, before I could reply, Nate nodded. “Sure!”
The three of us queued up for the ride. When it was our turn, Nate insisted that he wanted to sit beside me. Austin was grumbling as he slid into the seat behind me.
Soon, we shot off, and when the carriage dropped and water soaked my entire body.
“Oh my god!” I shrieked, and sneezed. I kind of forgot it was autumn.
“Here,” Nate handed me a hoodie which he had kept inside his bag- but it was wet.
I waved at him dismissively. “Never mind,” I got out of the carriage. “I feel cool this way!”
Austin shook his head. “You will get a cold.”
“Who cares about colds when you have tons of fun?” I replied. “Come on, let’s try the Spinning Coaster!” I said excitedly, pulling them with me.
I blacked out sometime after when I reached home, according to Nate. The thing I hated about myself if my immunity is very weak. That means I am more prone to coughs and flus then you.
I opened my eyes slightly, and Nate was by my side, wiping my face with a warm towel. I wanted to speak, but he placed a finger on my lips.
“You were having a fever. Your temperature is stable now. I think you are able to go back to school tomorrow. Do you want to go back?” he asked me. I nodded.
“They are announcing the results of the competition tomorrow.”
Nate nodded. “You know, just now when you fainted, Austin got very worried. He was the one who carried you back here.”
“Wasn’t- It wasn’t you?”
He shook his head. I tried to sit up, and he helped to lift my upper body.
“Then did he find out about you, well, staying in my apartment?” I asked him nervously. I can’t get into more trouble than I already have gotten into.
“No,” Nate replied simply.
I knew exactly what he was thinking. He knew I had feelings for Austin, and he was worried that I don’t have feelings for him anymore. That is his way of thinking; simple and innocent. And I love him for who he is.
“Nate,” I whispered.
He nodded, not looking up.
“I know what you are feeling.”
Nate tilted his head a little.
“I don’t like Austin anymore,” I said frankly. I didn’t even know if I was telling the truth. It seems a little crazy that I could forget Austin in such a short time, but I will have to try. I will try, for Nate.
Nate started to get up, and I hastily added, “I am telling the truth.”
Nate held my gaze for a few seconds, placed his hand on my chin and lifted my head. He pressed a kiss- a soft and innocent one on my forehead. He then spoke, looking into my light blue jewels.
“Of course I believe you.”
