Author's Note: Erm, written in the fifth grade, this is the epitome of cliche. Which is why I'm placing this in humour. Hope you get a good laugh from this, I know I did.

“…the sky blackened like a sheet was pulled over it. The winds howled with the force of a thousand screams. All around the landscape was bleak and barren. Nothing survived here but a few scraggly trees trying desperately to keep on growing. She did not know where this place was.

She closed her eyes hoping that the darkness would go away, but it continued to grow until all of the heavens shown in a foggy blackness. Lightning cackled at her hopes of no rain though this place dreadfully needed it. She knew that she was meant to be here but for what purpose she did not know.

A blinding flash cut across the sky and pain seared through her body like electricity. A beast of only her wildest dreams crept toward her. Screaming in terror she awoke.”

Sweat streaked down her body. As soon as she awoke, the memory of her dream began to fade. It was a blur by the time her alarm clock went off. School. Getting in the shower, she heard her older brother tiptoe up the stairs. Stupid, stupid Eric. Lucky classes for him don’t start till 11.

The ice cold shower got rid of the remnants of the ghastly dream. She sighed. Once again, the first day of school blues overtook her. There were no friends to look forward to seeing. Even though she had gone to school with them for 4 years, everyone seemed to stray away from her. Maybe it was because of her silver eyes that gave her a knowing look or it could be her night black hair that fell below her butt. Her complexion was pale due to her necessity to stay inside the darkness of her room.

Walking out of the bathroom, she looked about her room. It was a depressing sight. Everything was black; the walls, the rug, even her desk was black. Only the red covers on her bed stood out in the room.

Grabbing her books, she headed to the kitchen. Sitting at the table was her father. His bushy mustache covered most of his face and he smelled of basil and cloves. He had laughing green eyes and a wide toothy grin.

“Morning Sunshine, ready for another year at Blaine Woods?”

“Can’t I stay home? It’s only the first lousy day of school,” she pleaded.

“No, not this time. Besides, you have to meet your darling teachers and talk to your friends,” he drawled sarcastically, grinning beneath his moustache.

“Have you forgotten that I have no friends and my teachers hate me or did you just say that to annoy me?” she fumed through gritted teeth

“Raven, you do have friends. Not in real life, but you do have them in those books that you write.

“Those are evil, soulless people. Not to be confused as friends,” she said with a sigh.

“Well, let’s stop arguing before you’re late,” he answered, grinning again.

“Bye. Don’t blame me if I die at school today. It’ll be your fault!” she raged slamming the polished oak door.

“School Sucks you know,” she yelled to no one.

“Bye Honey,” laughed her father through the window.

Walking up to the school doors, Raven blinked slightly as a brunette girl she didn’t recognize ran towards her. Probably some CosmoGirl reading bimbo who heard black was the new in color, she thought to herself as she looked over the girl. She wore a black outfit similar to Raven’s, except plainer.

“Hello, are you Raven?” inquired the girl.

“And who are you?” Raven asked, her eyes forming slits. She knew she should’ve stayed home.

“Please come with me. We don’t have much time. We must hurry!” whispered the girl urgently dragging Raven back to the sidewalk.

“Stop pulling me and tell me who you are!” commanded Raven who was getting more and more agitated. Who the hell does this girl think she is?

“You are Raven, daughter of Jessie Cobalt, daughter of the immortal Illyria?” questioned the girl.

“Huh! What in the world are you talking about? And again, who are you?” said Raven, growing even more confused.

“I’m your sister Laos. Please come. Today is our day of power and we need you there. You are the key to our survival!” breathed the girl. Raven decided to follow assuming this was just a prank. If it was a prank than at least it was a way to get out of school.

She followed the girl all the way to Vampyre Lagoon. Raven always loved walking over here to loose her stress and relax with her thoughts.

“Come on. The portal will close soon. We must hurry!” pronounced Laos. She brought Raven to the lagoon. In the center of the water was a glittering circle of light. Laos jumped in.

“You mean that I have to jump in. I’ll get wet. I don’t know what you’re deal is but I’m not going to continue to play a part in your pra-aaahhhh”, yelled Raven as a large silver coated wolf bounded toward her.

Brent sat on a dead oak thinking to himself. These girls are so stupid. They think they can stop the rise of the wolves. Hah! Such thoughts are futile.

“Brent, are you ready to attack,” asked a snarling voice from the shadows that roused Brent from his thoughts.

“You know,” continued the voice, “we must not allow the girl to reach the town in Darkling Forest. They don’t know her full importance but if they find out even an inkling of it they will attack and we will be stopped, once again, in our quest. We cannot let the uprising fail!”

“Yes, master. I will attack and slaughter. Her ancestors will roll in their graves when they see her guts spilled over the lake. She will not even utter a death cry,” answered Brent in an exultant tone.

“Good. Remember the key to a proper uprising is to eliminate all who oppose you starting with the important ones and working your way down. Now go attack and do not fail me. Go,” hissed the voice.

Brent hurdled into the forest toward the lagoon licking his lips in anticipation.

The wolf lunged at her, scraping at her shoulders. Three claw marks shown through her black shirt. Amazingly, the cut was not deep. Looking at the wolf and the girl yelling to her in the water, she made a choice. Between being wolf dinner and prank Raven would choose prank any day. She jumped.

“Hurry! Say these words: Blood of human, Soul of hell I grant myself under your power o’ dark ones,” hurried Laos.

Raven muttered the nonsense words as fast as she could. The last thing she saw was the wolf leaping into the water with a howl coming from deep in his throat.

Brent barely marked Raven as he pounced at her. Rolling onto his back he thought about his next move. The girl jumped into the water. Hmm. Should he follow her or go back to his master? Either choice was dangerous. He dreaded his master’s rage more than those vampires. He chose to jump.

“…I grant myself under your power o’ dark ones,” muttered the girl

As he dived at her she gazed at him showing silver eyes that probably could see through anyone. Wait, stay focused, aim your attack but as he reached her, the portal opened and he fell through. Changing back to human form he thought that he was about to die. Good thing he didn’t care.

Raven arrived in the center of a small village. It was enclosed by trees on all sides. Next to her lay Laos, still in a daze, and a young man with emerald eyes who was crowded by women in black. His pants were torn and tanned with age. His hair was bright red, almost fake looking in its brilliance

“Are you all right?” asked Laos standing up.

“I think so, but where am I and what in the world is going on? I thought you were just pulling a prank on me, and what happened to the wolf and the lagoon? I’m so confused,” sighed Raven. Her head was swimming with thousands of questions.

“We’re in Darkling Forest. Everything here is always night. We are in the old world,” answered Laos in a history book tone.

“But that still doesn’t explain what’s going on. Who are these people and who is that half-nude man, what’s this special day of power, what’s with me being your only hope, and where am I? I just don’t understand,” screamed Raven exasperated and confused.

“I am not sure I’m the right person to explain this to you. Come with me,” replied Laos helping her up and motioning her toward the thrall of women.

“Nai, this is Raven. She is the chosen,” spoke Laos addressing the ghost-like woman with green hair who was standing over the man.

“Forget it. I’m not telling you anything of importance so you guys could torture me or kill me. Which ever is best for you. You won’t hear anything from me,” spat the man with a sullen smirk on his face.

“Shut-up you worthless piece of wolf meat. I’ll have nothing said by you. Take him to Rasa’s house,” snapped Nai directing the order at three women.

“Now,” she began turning to Raven,” you must want to know what’s going on. Sit down Do you know what vampires and werewolves are?” spoke Nai as they sat on the ground.

“Of Course. I write about them. They’re just make-believe,” replied Raven in an annoyed tone.

“Humph. Child does this look make-believe to you?” asked Nai. Her face did a metamorphosis before Ravens eyes. The teeth grew razor sharp. Her face wrinkled up like a rubber mask. Her eyes turned from pitch black to yellow slits.

“Now we can begin our talk.”

Raven’s head was spinning from the headache that threatened to explode her skull. Last night, or this night (she could not tell), the woman, Nai, had explained to her everything that was going on and that everything that she had learned was way too much for her to take in at one time. Raven rested her head on the soft, linen pillow as she reminisced on the conversation.

“…Unlike in your books vampires can survive in daylight, though they hate it. Ah, but you’re not thinking about this. That man we took away was the human form of a wolf that attacked you. There are no males in this village. It is a female sanctuary. Now, about this day of power. Though Laos may have told you it was yesterday, it is actually in a fortnight. It is known as the reawakening. It is when the vampires call on the one true master, Illyria, to fight the rising threat of the wolves. This is where you come in. Your mother was the only vampire to ever have a living baby. You are powerful and the werewolves see you as a threat. Only your mother’s line has the power to call on the one true master…” and then Nai went on to talk about the vampire history. As she talked all Raven could think about was the reawakening and the werewolf that attacked her. Finally, Nai announced that in a few hours time she would be brought to watch the interrogation of the werewolf.

Now she was lying in bed thinking about it and waiting to be called. Soon she would be watching the werewolf that attacked her be interrogated. Surprisingly, after learning all this she was not scared not in the least.

“That fool Brent, went and got himself captured by the vampires headed by Nai,” hissed an angry voice.

“Good thing we didn’t tell him anything too important,” responded a cool, unworried voice.

“Anything told can be considered important in the hands of a vampire. Did that thought ever cross your mind Scyther, or are thoughts rare in your head?” growled the voice.

“Well Ather, unlike you, I use the brain my mother gave me. All Brent knows is that he was supposed to kill those girls. And, besides, Brent is stronger than you think. He can resist those vampires. Even a group of them is no match for the Anders line,” retorted Scyther in a scorning tone.

“Well, how will Arnt react when he finds out? Answer that one!” hollered Ather.

“As all his line do. He’ll get pissed, slit some throats, and make new plans. Way to make me state the obvious. Even you could have figured that out,” mocked Scyther with an annoyed glance at Ather.

“We should go,” continued Scyther, “Arnt is calling. He should have found out by now. Do you know the way out or do I have to show you everything?”

Raven walked into the large meetinghouse. In a barbed wire cage sat the werewolf. His eyes shown in remembered amusement when he spotted her.

“Hey you’re the one I was attacking. I guess I kinda missed,” He shouted with a serious grin pasting his face.

“You didn’t miss my shoulder,” she found herself shouting back. Though he nearly killed her, she seemed to be amused by him. He had a childishness about him that she found…interesting.

“You don’t want to talk to wolf crap. They’re all the same: evil, dirty, and evil,” spoke Laos coming up behind her.

“He doesn’t seem too evil to me but the dirt part I agree with you on. Looks like he hasn’t taken a shower in ages,” laughed Raven. Her sister was a vampire but that was the only difference between them. Other than that they acted like they’ve known each other all their lives.

Nai climbed to the podium on the side of the cage.

“We are all here to interrogate and persecute the werewolf that attacked the closest relative to the one true master. Now, the elders will find out what he knows.”

Three young looking women gathered around the cage. The whole time Nai had been talking the man had sat there grinning, but now he turned in fear from the women. The women began to chant and a light formed from them to the man. In about five minutes the light disappeared and the women announced that he knew nothing.

Nai started again, “Now we will leave while he becomes defanged.”

The women crowded out the door as new chanting began. Raven did not need to know what this was to be clouded with a sense of fear. She decided to visit the man later to ask him a few questions of her own.

Raven walked to the house of Rasa, whom had the prisoner locked in her basement.

“Come to see dog boy, have you?” spat Rasa with a look of disgust.

“No, Rasa I’ve come to see you. Of course I came to see that guy. I want to ask him some questions,” answered Raven.

“O.K. But don’t let him out,” yelled Rasa.

Raven entered the house. Through a door she could see little eyes peeking out at her. She walked down the narrow hall until she reached the steps that led to the basement. The stairs creaked and moaned as she walked down them.

“Who’s there? Is it another one of those witches who ripped off my fangs? Or is it someone come to gloat?” bellowed a voice as she reached the bottom step.

“No, I just want to ask you some questions,” responded Raven appearing before him.

He was pale. His veins shown through his muscular arms creating green lines like tree roots along his arm. His clothes were ragged and worn and his hair stuck out like pins. The blackness in his eyes was eerie and she envisioned he could see through her.

“So what did you want to ask me?” He sneered.

“Why did you attack me?” she asked going for the straightforward approach.

“It is my duty. My master said I must kill you he answered flatly.

“If I let you out would you attack me?” she asked.

“Yes I would,” he replied crouching low to look at something. Why did this girl ask him so many questions? And such stupid ones at that?

“Would you like me to let you out?” she questioned breaking the flow of his thoughts.

“What the hell are you? Are you vampire or wolf? Your kind isn’t supposed to let go of their prisoners.

What’s the matter with you? Are you a traitor or something?” he blurted out.

“No I just wanted to see your reaction. I would never let you out. I’m leaving!” she spat at him.

“Wait, don’t go. Please let me out!” he begged.

“No way. I’m not letting out an enemy,” she argued but something seeped into her head telling her to let him go. She tried to fight it but nothing worked and she found herself opening the cage.

A portal opened in the wall and Brent rushed through it. Thank Arnt for telling that girl to let him out. Lucky for him most vampires are weak-minded or there would be a good many nights he would be spending in that basement. He traveled into a room full of men.

“What the hell did you go and get yourself captured for by the witches?” growled a voice.

“It’s not my fault. I was only trying to get the girl like you ordered me to!” argued Brent.

“Well did they get any information about our plans?” questioned the voice.

“No, I’m not that stupid,” answered Brent cooling down.

“Now we have to improvise now that they know we’re trying to kill the girl,” bellowed the voice addressing the whole room.

“Yes, master,” answered the room simultaneously.

“We will win this war and the vampires shall perish in our uprising”

“You what!” screamed Nai.

“I let him go,” Raven answered finally.

“How could you?” questioned Nai.

“I told him I wouldn’t but something compelled me to do it. One second I was walking up the steps, the next I was unlocking his cage. I don’t know what came over me. It was like someone was in my head telling me to do this,” answered Raven.

“Arnt. His mind control powers are of the highest level.”

Raven nodded, not quite getting it, but too afraid to ask.

“The War seems to have begun.”
