The Caged Bird’s Tale

The wind inspires him
As he jumps from the branch
He’s able to taste with his wings:

The vast, welcoming skies
The sun warming the earth
The sweetness that the morning brings

He breathes the air deeply
His wings beat a rhythm
He is nothing less than a king

But when his eye fell upon
A creature far below
Encased in something like a ring

A tear fell from that eye
As he listened to its song
It was bring, it sounded like spring

There was courage in its song
A kind of hope in its voice
For freedom the caged bird did sing

I didn't read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. I wrote this poem for a contest we all had to take part in that has to do with Martin Luther King Jr. and his quest for freedom.
