I’m Only a Street Sign,

But I was born with greatness.

As honest Abe let out

A boisterous scream

Simultaneous with his advent,

Red streaks appeared upon my blank face,

Quietly forming my character.

The date of our mutual birth is where the resemblance ends.

I found a place on Central Square

Where all could see my boldness.

As Abe flourished, grew,

Changed homes, lives, hearts,

I began to fade.

My bold red lettering surrendered to dust

As time faded what was once held dear.

As Abe made his grand Proclamation,

The words “Love, Justice, Mercy”

Could no longer be discerned upon my face.
