Reminisce
There was never a day in my life as eventful as the day I met the lady in green. To this day, I do not know who she is, just the fact that watching her in the mall was the turning point in my life.
Her appearance was burned into my mind like the image of a lover. She was a brunette bombshell. She had long brown hair that she wore in a long, thick braid that flowed as she moved, and eyes that were a jade green that she hid behind cat eyed glasses. The woman appeared to be of Asian descent, but the Caucasian features softened the Asian ones.
Her beauty was peculiar, as was the dress. She wore a long, almost low cut dress with a slit up her left leg stopping at the knee. The sleeves came just below her shoulder before transforming into several asymmetrical slashes. The dress appeared new, but it seemed in the wrong time period, not old fashioned, but not quite modern. I would have passed her off as an out of place woman begging for attention, if not for her ear. It was not the shape of her ear, but the fact that she had a silver and gold decorated clamp attaching to her right earlobe. It resembled the tags that are put on animals to track them. But it seemed excessive for a tag to be that fancy.
It was an all but ordinary day shopping with my best friend. He was buying lingerie for his girlfriend, again. Felt like every other month he was shopping for something for him claiming it was for his lady. Call it what he wants, he was just looking for something to please him. Feeling uncomfortable being dragged into a store with oversized posters of skimpy clothes on women that seemed to be worshiped by anyone bearing a Y chromosome, I decided to wait outside on the bench. Any other day, that would have been the wise choice, but not on this Saturday afternoon in December.
While enjoying my soda I was finishing from my lunch, I was lounging in the armchair with my back to the store, I saw her. At first, my glance passed upon her like most of the people. I assumed she was nothing. It was the color of the dress that attracted my attention. I never saw such a green fabric in my life, as vibrant as a gem, but as dark as a forest.
I could not help but turn my attention back to the woman. She met my eyes and gave me a worried smile. At that moment, I could not tell if she was concerned for her life, or mine, but I smiled back as any other guy in his early twenties would. I fidgeted with my baseball hat, trying to make it level. We interlocked eyes for what seemed to me like an eternity.
She broke the stare to check over her shoulder. That was the first time that I saw the man in red. He was more out of place than the lady in green because he was carrying some sort of giant stick, I believe in fantasy terms it would be called a scepter, but thinking back, it was more of a cane. The one thing that I will never forget is the look of sheer terror as she turned around. She looked at me once more before scouting for an exit.
I could not distinguish the look the man in red gave, rage or determination. But the scar he had on his face was haunting, a deep gash down his nose splitting it into two, a scar that had separated the nose in two. His eyes were a deep, icy blue. His hair was a dark blonde that looked unkempt, matching his unshaven cheeks and jaw. What he wore was more awkward than the elegant green dress she was wearing. His outfit was a faded red suit. At one time, it might have been a blood red, but that must have been ages ago. The jacket was torn and was streaked with either soot or coal, along with the pants. Rips cover the entire suit, looking as though it was attacked by a giant cat. His shoes were spats, or were at one time. Instead of a black and white, they were black and red. Although polished and shined, they were worn to the point where his red socks were visible. He wore a red hat, not a bowler hat, almost a top hat, it seemed to be the newest part of his wardrobe. However, it was caked in dirt. At least, I thought it was dirt it was a reddish color that did not seem like it was from earth, but I could have been seeing things wrong.
I almost did not do it, I almost stayed out of the conflict. But I saw that man’s hate towards the beautiful woman and had to do something to help her. I shot up from my chair and before I knew what I was doing, I had the chair in my hands and was swinging it towards his face like a cricket player gone crazy.
I heard cracking of wood. I saw his nose mash to the side and his jaw become slack on the right side that I hit him. His eyes rolled back into his head and he collapsed to the floor.
The woman in green looked me in the eyes and I knew what she was going to tell me to do. I dropped the chair and started running. I managed to catch up to the woman and her genuine smile told me she was grateful. Her green eyes were trying to tell me something, but I could not interpret it before I started to notice that the crowd was pushing against the way we were running. She grabbed my arm and pulled me. The last thing I remember from that sequence of events was her looking back at me with affection and winking at me.
