Rules and Regulations Chapter Six

Mum and I were having an amazing day. Dad was at work and Mum decided she wanted to take me out for a Girls Day Out. Girls Day Out – with her son. Strange much? Not to me. I LOVED IT! I lived for it. The one day a week we could spend time together without my father breathing down our necks. She decided we could do a little shopping, and then go to a movie.

We did the shopping. Although, being six, all I was really allowed to do was give thumbs up or down, and pick out some shoes. Once she was satisfied, we took a short drive t the local AMC.

Mum: OH TY! Look sweetie! Practical Magic is playing! Let’s go see that!

Ty: I thought there were supposed to be scary parts in that though?

Mum: No sweetie. That’s Blade. Practical Magic doesn’t have anything scary. But, if we do find something scary in it, I promise I will cover your eyes ok?

Ty: Ok mommy!

So there we are, watching Practical Magic, when she gets a call. It’s a call from Daddy, so she has to take it. Otherwise he gets angry. And when he gets angry, mum gets hurt. And hate it when he hurts mommy. I tried to stop him once, but I don’t remember much of that night. Just the bruises when I woke up.

And right then and there, at the tender age of six, sitting in a movie theater full of people, I realized I agree with Sally. I never want to fall in love. I’ve seen what it does to Mommy and Daddy. And if that’s love, I want absolutely no part of it.

I also decided in that moment, that I would steal from Sally. Tonight, in my houses conservatory, I would summon the true love spell Amas Veritas. I would make my guy so wicked strange; there would never be any risk of me falling in love.

Her call lasted the entire movie. It kind of upset me though, the movie I mean. She did this spell, yet she still fell in love. Well, that’s because she gave really easy stuff. I would make it virtually impossible for me to find the guy. No one can change their hair color and dye their eyes. So, I'm home free. Never have to worry about love.

The rest of the day, which is really only about an hour, goes by quickly. Dad gets home, we all eat dinner, and they go to bed. Once they are in bed, I sneak downstairs to the kitchen. Pick out one of mum’s old baking bowls an head for the conservatory. I lay out my notebook with the qualities my ‘dream man’ will have.

His hair changes color.

His eyes change color.

He is painfully gorgeous.

He is very kind, caring, and giving, despite his outward appearance.

He loves the smell of gasoline.

His favorite color is purple.

He is very unique.

He is opinionated.

He has the uncontrollable urge to keep me safe.

As I read these off, I pulled a petal from one of the many hundred types of flowers my mother kept alive in here, and placed it into the bowl. When I got to his favorite color, a shadow slithered across the floor.

Shadow: Ty?

Thank god. It’s just my mum.

Ty: Yes mum?

Mum: What are you doing?

Ty: Summoning a true love spell called Amas Veritas.

Mum: Sweetie, you don’t need to be lookin for love this early in your life. Live and enjoy your life.

Ty: That’s why I’m doing this. So I never fall in love.

Mum looked at me with a face that goes far beyond being puzzled.

Mum: I thought you said it was a true love spell?

Ty: It is. But the man I'm summoning doesn’t exist.

Mum: Why would you create a true love spell about a man that doesn’t exist?

Ty: If the man doesn’t exist then I will never find love. And if I never find love, I will never be hurt.

Mum: Why don’t you want to ever fall in love sweetie? And love doesn’t have to be painful.

Ty: I see what it has done to you. If being in love means waking up with a new bruise every morning, I never want to be in love.

My mum’s eyes went wide, and she let out a rather large exhale as her shoulders slumped forwards. She was suppressing tears.

Mum: Not all love is like me and Daddies. We just have…a weird way of showing it, that’s all.

Ty: I’m still casting the spell mum. Just to make sure. I don’t want someone to show me they love me the way Daddy shows you he loves you.

She just stared at me, looking shocked and hurt. Pain washed over her face as I continued my spell. Just a few more petals and I will never ever ever have to worry about falling in love.
