We are all shifters of some kind in this place. There are many of us but only a few groups of shifters: different species of dogs, foxes, and mostly cats. Me? No I’m not an ordinary shifter. I believe I’m the only one of my kind. I am a wolf shifter. Yes, I may be different and I could be special but everyone refuses to accept my ... uniqueness. I am an outcast among outcasts.

All humans fear us. Few that I know of have gotten over that fear and tried to be civil to us. None know where this...school... of sorts resides to find us. It is at this school where I tell of my life, living among different animal shifters...

I am known by my nickname Midnight. I guess so many people have called me by that name that I have forgotten my real name. We all are given nicknames based upon our other form’s type and color. Another uniqueness about me is my wolf form is the only black coat.

Anyway, this school teaches the things normal schools would but with a shifter’s twist. We learn of how the shifters came to be and how the shifters of old had to hide their secret even more then because of the human’s fear of the unknown. We are also taught to fend for ourselves in case we have no home to go to because of our families. That and among other things.

Oh yeah, we are also told why our other forms took so long, or a short time, to reveal themselves. Although I had found my form six years ago I kept hidden, thinking I was the only one suffering with this curse. I found this place only two months ago and I was doing fine just hanging around the first couple of days and reading people. (I’m good at that) It was during that time that I noticed there were no other wolf forms that I could see. It was also then that I became wary of showing myself.

I was right to be wary.

After about another week, the head mistress thought it was time to reveal my animal form to the others in my age group and dormitory. I hadn’t even shown the head mistress, so when I got up in front of my dorm and shifted, everyone was shocked and immediately shunned me. Everyone except the head mistress and my roommates who had become my best friends. And so my story continues.

I lie awake thinking about the upcoming assessment in survival class when my very sensitive ears pick up light pawsteps heading my way.

Inwardly I sigh. ‘Not again,’ I whine mentally.

“Moonlight... don’t even try,” I say to my wall. The pawsteps stop and then I feel a slight weight on the edge of my bed.

I turn over to see the familiar deep blue eyes and silver pelt of my roommate and best friend, Moonlight the cat. Moon for short.

She gives me puppy dog eyes cat style before shifting to her original form in the blink of an eye.

“Awww! Midnight that’s not fair.” Moon whined, “You have way better hearing than I do.”

“And eyesight and sense of smell and brains to boot,” I tease.

Moon fake pouts and I laugh. She is one of the few that make me laugh. She breaks into her infectious smile before getting off my bed to change for class. I watch as she goes through her dresser to find an outfit not torn by the survival class we share together. Apparently I’m the only one who comes away from that class unscathed.

I’m visited by a bout of envy as I admire her graceful feline movements, her petite yet curvy body, her soft short silvery blonde hair, and caring blue eyes set perfectly in a beautiful face.

“Ugh can’t a girl get any sleep around here?” came the grumpily asked question.

I look to the far side of the room to see my other best friend slip into her animal form to stretch. I gaze at her with equal admiration to Moon. Angel, as she is called, is a fox shifter. Her animal form is pure white and she has clever knowing green eyes.

Angel shifts back and starts gathering her toiletries. Again I watch, not wanting to get out of bed yet and again I envy everything about my roommate. Her long hair so blonde it’s to the point where it’s white, her green eyes that show so much emotion it’s easy to read her thoughts, her swift yet graceful movements and her slender form.

‘Ugh I can’t take this this early in the morning’ I thought as I roll over to face the wall again and cover my head with my sheets. I lay there for who knows how long before I get jumped on by a certain feline friend of mine.

“I thought you were supposed to be the serious older sibling,” I grumble as I push Moon to the floor. I swear she acts like she’s two or something. I may be taller but she’s older by a year. I hear silence, then the inevitable.

A sniff resounded around the room.

I roll my eyes and shift over to face my adopted sister. She is sitting on the floor, a hurt look on her fac.

“I knew it, you don’t like me,” Moon says with another sniff.

I sigh and motion for her to come and sit by me. ‘I have a feeling you only do this to feel special,’ I thought.

“Moon, you of all people should know that you’re the only one who could light up my darkest night.” I say to her as I give her a hug.

“Thank you,” she says while smiling her special smile. Moon then snuggles her slighter form into my side. Heh. You’d think she’d adopted me as her mother when it’s the other way around. She comforts and protects me.

“If you two are quite done. Midnight you better hurry, class starts in ten minutes.” Angel says coming out of our shared bathroom.

I look at the clock and gasp.

“Oh CRAP!! I’m gonna be late!!” I exclaim.

haha she's as scatter brained as me! lol
