The Burning

"Let go of me, let go of me," Susannah cried, trying to break free from the men that held her against her will. Her usually bright blue eyes were dull with fear. Her long blonde hair was matted against her scalp with dirt and blood. The men ignored her and continued to drag her from her arms. Annoyed at her, they let go of her arms and dragged her by her hair. Susannah looked at the man in charge, John Phillips. He was the one who was convinced she was a witch.

A crowd had begun to form. They all chanted, "Burn the witch. Burn the witch. Burn the witch."

What happened to the hangings, Susannah thought. Burnings seem more painful to her.

"Let her go, she's not a witch," her best friend, Mary, shrieked. "She's not a witch, I'm telling you, she's not a witch!"

Everybody ignored her. Someone even pushed Mary out of the way. Mary's dark eyes were glistened with tears. Her usually pulled back black hair was loose and wild. Her dress was ripped and torned, stained with dirt.

"Burn the witch, burn the witch," the crowd continued chanting.

They approached a stake that was before a pile of logs. One of the men dragging Susannah started tying her to the stake. Susannah started crying, realizing there was no way she was going to escape.

"Mary, help me," she cried.

Mary pushed through the crowd and ran to John. "Please, John, she's innocent. I tell you, she's not a follower of Satan."

John shook his head. "We found witch's items in her house. We have all the evidence for the burning. Besides, many of the girls in this village are getting cursed. We must burn her as fast as possible."

"But Susannah's only a young girl, she has a whole life ahead of her! Please."

"Keep begging and we'll burn you too!"

Mary's mouth shutted and she stared at Susannah, apologizing to her with her eyes.

"No," Susannah whispered. "No!"

"Burn the witch! Burn the witch!"

"Let me go," Susannah shrieked.

John slowly shook, watching her carefully. One of the men brought a torch and lit the fire. The fire spewed and quickly spread to the stake. Susannah shrieked, tears rolling down her face. She felt her skin burn. Her blonde hair then caught fire, as did her clothes. She shrieked but nobody let her go. The crowd laughed with glee. Mary cried, unable to do anything to help her best friend.

About an hour later, Susannah was burned to death, nothing left but ashes.

Mary left, her face still tear-streaked. But she was no longer sad. She was down-right furious. "Don't worry, Susannah," she muttered, avoiding all the townspeople and walked back to her home. "I'll make sure they pay. I'll make sure they'll all pay."
