Lantern’s Glow
(Based on Goya’s “The Third of May, 1808”)
Muffled crying – the only sound
As the sun hides her face in shame
From the struggle fought in her rays.
Darkness shrouds the land,
Throwing his shadow over the scene
Of bloody war and early death.
One small glow reaches into the night,
Spreading fingers into the black
Pushing light in gloom.
The lantern’s glow points – accusing,
To the next victim to be swallowed
By the consuming darkness.
The man prostrates himself, bowing,
Surrendering to the lantern’s glare.
He pleads helplessly with shadows –
Give him mercy, wait till day returns,
But the sun has washed her hands of them.
