10:45am Wednesday April 29, 1814

I met Dare on the roof the Den. I was in my thieving outfit, and he was in his. His is not quite as risqué as mine, however suppose that is because he is a man. Black pants, a black shirt, block boots, black gloves and even a black mask do not measure up to a female in trousers.

“Ready to go?” He asked with a cheeky grin.

“I suppose.”

We then took off for the house. We did not necessarily travel together because we have slightly different methods of traversing the depths of London at night. It didn’t really matter, we were both going to the same place so at that moment it was more of a race to see who can get to the spot first.

I won.

Dare wasn’t long behind me though, only a few minutes. Still, I lightly teased him on his slowness.

He just smirked and asked why I had not entered the building yet.

“The window won’t open.” I waved towards our choice of entrance.

“Is it locked?”

“No. I think it is just being difficult.”

Dare smirked, “I am sure it is nothing a man can’t handle.”

“I bet you are correct,” I conceded, “But where are we going to find one of those at this hour?”

“Ha. Ha. Ha.”

The window actually was somewhat troublesome. Dare had to work to open it. Of course I mocked him gently until he offered to let me open it. Then I stopped talking.

Once we were in it was so simple. The safe was out, on the ground in the corner. “Wasn’t it nice of them to leave it out for us?” I asked. I walked over to it somewhat gleefully. I do so enjoys cracking locks. It is a little puzzle.

Like any good thief, as I approached the safe, Dare stopped making noise and began examining the room. This job is very much easier with a partner. Perhaps I need to get one permanently. But then I suppose I have to split the money…. Hmm.

It only took me ten minutes to figure out the lock combination. 23, 4,12. I almost messed up at one point, I was startled by a noise on the street and lost my concentration momentarily. However I quickly regained it.

As I opened the safe I whispered, “Hello darlings.” There stacked inside the safe were the piles of vouchers. ALMACK’S was stamped clearly on them. I still think the entire idea of stealing the vouchers is ridiculous. The patronesses will notice. Actually maybe if I close the safe again, they won’t notice for a long time. So then we will have one ball with riffraff. Oh that would be hilarious.

“Good job.” Dare told me.

“Thanks.” I moved out of his way so that he could start filling his bag. His was full in a short period of time, and I was able to start filling mine. It is nice that this loot is paper. It is so much lighter then when I have to steal gold. One time I had to steal ten gold bars. Let me tell you that it was not an enjoyable experience.

I finished stuffing the vouchers into our grab bag. There were actually quite a few of them. I was a tad surprised. I thought there would a small packet. Instead there were stacks. I felt as though I was robbing a bank vault rather then the safe that belongs to two women of the ton.

Just then I heard shouting downstairs, which was quickly followed by the sounds of booted feet pounding up the stairs. I looked over at Dare, who was already halfway out the window. “Quick!” He hissed, “Throw me the bag!” I obeyed without question. “Now come on!” Dare began climbing down the wall.

I ran to follow him, but just then the door to the office burst open. “STOP!” some uncouth man yelled at me.

I ignored him and sprinted towards the window. I was almost there, only a foot away when everything went black. I thought I heard Dare’s vice whispering frantically, “Ziza! Come on!”

I think I was only out for a few moments, because when I came to they were tying my wrists together. I inwardly cursed at myself, how could I have gotten caught? I am the Lioness damnit! There was still a chance of escape; I did not give in to panic. I quickly noted that they had not yet removed my mask, for which I was extremely grateful. Although they had moved me all the way to the other side of the room. That would make my escape a tad more difficult.

I examined my surroundings, there was only one fellow who was by me. Apparently they thought I was still unconscious. What had caused my to black out? Ah. I spotted a metal candlestick on the ground. Yes, that would cause the intense pain I was currently experiencing.

I rolled away from the officer tying me and used both feet to kick him. I had not qualms about kicking him in the groin. His muted anguish brought the others to attention. Good god. There were many officers. I was on my feet in a moment and running for the window. I had my hands free in a few moments, the buffoon had been taking an eon to tie them. I dodged two of the men. It was really getting to be like a circus act. One man slid across my path to trip me, however I leapt over him. Right behind him was a man who stood legs apart to stop me. Fool. I pushed off of the man whom I had jumped over and dived over the strong fellow’s shoulder. I landed and rolled. I still had my momentum and the window was right there!

I had to skid to a stop. The window was closed. DAMNIT! I struggled to reopen the window. It had been hard to open the first time. Dare had to strain to open it. I did not need it to be thrown wide by any means, however I need to be able to slide through it. I was keenly aware that behind me my captors were creeping up to me. I tried to push the window up. I was working and working and no avail. I then noticed a monstrous hand was pushing the window back down. Bloody hell. I am not going to get away this way. A glance was sufficient to tell me there was a giant attached to the hand.

I sighed and gave up. I turned around to face all the fellows. I would have put on a bright smile. However they since they cannot see my face I decided that such a fake smile would be useless. “Hello chaps! What can I do for you today?” I added a slight hint of an accent. Though it is faint enough to make it difficult to identify.

“You are under arrest, you are!” The bald fellow snarled. Spit flew onto my face.

“Ug. Good god sir, restrain your saliva. I do not see why I have to explain any of my actions to you.”

“You have to explain them to me.” The giant on my right growled.

“Ahem.” I looked all the way up at him. Good lord he must be seven feet tall. “Well, for you I think I might be willing to talk.”

“Tie him up and search him, boys.” He growled.

I took a step back and put my hands up, “Thanks boys, however I will have to decline that offer. In fat, I will be on my way if you will just move...”

“Boys! Get him!”

Before I could jump out of the way, a wave of disgusting men overwhelmed me. I practically gagged at the smell of unwashed men. The men had me on my stomach in no time they were not being very gentle as the tied my wrists together. “Hey! I say, do loosen up on those bracelets you are fastening on! I should like to use those hands at some other point in my life!” I exclaimed. The Lioness was really ruling me now. I doubt that Eliza would be chattering away like this... especially to men that have her at their mercy.

“Looky here!” Some ugly skinny man held up my Lioness stamp. “This here is the Lioness’s stamp. I think we have caught ourselves the Velvet Lioness!”

Damn. Damn. Damn.

“What? Is this true?” The giant asked.

I decided to surrender rather then let the men go on a hunt to see if they can find that I am female. I have been groped enough this evening as it is. I made my voice a tad higher then before, “Indeed sir. You have caught the Velvet Lioness. Congratulations to you all. Now, may I please stand? This is no way to treat a lady.”

“How do we knows you are really a girl?” Some buffoon asked. I wanted to throttle him.

“I say we take off her clothes!!” Some one in the back yelled. I found someone else I wanted to kill. The general consensus of these fools was a shout in agreement.

“Whoa!” I yelled as they advanced. “Good sirs! I am a lady! Please do not dishonor me like that! You will have ample proof if you take off my head scarf!”

“Hm.” The giant seemed to be considering my suggestion. “Do as she says! We can always take off more of her clothes later!”

There was a roar of approval and my head was jerked sharply backwards. I winced as I felt the head scarf be torn off my head. I always tie it tightly so that it won’t fall off accidentally, however now I regret my usual act.

“She is telling the truth! Look at her blonde hair!” Thank goodness that my blonde wig did not come off with the scarf.

“Let’s take off her mask!” Some one yelled. I wanted to gag every single one of these men.

“I say fellows! Is this really the place to do this? I mean you are still at her Ladyship’s residence. I doubt she will be pleased to come home and find you all still here.” I was chattering away.

“Boys! We are taking her out of here. Let’s see that she won’t cause us anymore problems!”

I saw the boots coming towards me and I curled up to protect myself. In the background I heard awful laughter before I went unconscious.

When I came to, I was in lots of pain and in my own private cell. My hands were untied too. I quickly felt my face and was relieved to feel that I still had my mask on. My head was absolutely pounding. I noticed that I had my own personal guards. Two of them. Both of them are young men. Hmmm.

“Ooo... Ow...” I moaned. I tried to sound as feminine as possible. “Where am I? What happened? Oh... my head hurts so much...” I made sure my blonde hair looked tousled. “Oh my...” I peeked and saw that the young fellow was looking back towards me.

“Oh!” I made it seem like I had only just noticed my guards. “Oh who are you? Are you here to help me?”

“Erm. Well, miss you see...” From the sound of his voice the younger guard seemed to be about fifteen years old. Better and better.

“Hush. Stop talkin’ to ‘er. She’s a witch she is.” I inwardly glared at the older boy. He didn’t look like he was that much older then the other fellow. I think he is mostly much more determined to do his job. Bloody hell, I hate honest guards.

“Me? Why I am no witch!” I tried to sit up as though I was indignant at such an accusation. “Oooo.” My act that it hurt too much to sit up was not all an act. “I am a fine lady...”

“You are?” I would hear the wide-eyed innocence in his voice. Oh, poor boy. What a job to have. I feel almost sorry at my deception.

“No you aren’t. You are a thief. A damned thief. You are going to hang, yes you will.”

I felt my blood go cold. “Hung? Oh no, I can’t. I can’t! I am no thief!” I began to cry quietly... or at least pretend to. “Oh no, what will Father do without me?” I was definitely causing the other fellow to be uncomfortable.

“He is a man, he can do without you.” The honest guard’s voice was gruff.

I glared at the back of his head. I would have made a rude gesture, however the younger man was still watching me. “Why would your father need you?” He asked.

“He-he’s sick. I am the only one he has left. Mum died last year, and Little Georgie got sick a few months ago. He didn’t get better.” I sniffed.

“Oh.” The young fellow seemed to be thinking. After a few moments he voiced a question, “Is that why you were stealing?”

I nodded tearfully.

The other guard was getting interested now, “So are really the Lioness?”

At the mention of my name, I made great show to wiping away any tears and standing upright. My voice firm when I said, “I am.”

The younger guard seemed taken aback at my sudden transformation. The older open rolled his eyes.

“Really? We’re guarding the Velvet Lioness?” The younger guard seemed to be babbling.

I walked over to the bars of my prison and leaned on them. “Say, what are your names? I feel I should know the names of the men that captured me.”

As expected, these dismal guards lapped up the flattery like dogs. “I’m Billy, and this here is John.” The younger guard gushed. I think John wanted to slap him but was restraining himself.

“John, Billy…” I let my gaze lay on Billy for a moment. “How was I captured? I know you two fine your men subdued me. How did you find me?”

“Well,” Billy began. John was glaring at him fiercely. “This tip comes in right? It says that the Velvet Lioness will be stealing some stuff and it gives the address. The boss sends a bunch of us out to get you.”

A tip? Who would send a tip out? Dare and I had thrown the idea about for a few minutes, but we decided against it. Who else knew of the job? The Four, but they don’t know any details. Besides they would never betray me. Jamie knew… Jamie would never turn me in. If only because then his income would be halted. I made sure to keep my voice light and innocent, “Who sent in the tip?
“Thomas Brow-“

“SHUT UP!” John shout cut off Billy’s response. However he was not quite fast enough. I caught the name. Thomas Brown. Mr. Brown. I thought that bastard was dead. Or at least out of my worries.

I smiled sweetly at the two men and acted as if I had not heard. “What was that? Who did you say it was?”

“I said-“

“Nothing. Billy didn’t say nothin’.” John cut in again. In a lower voice I heard him talking to Billy. “Billy, she is a criminal. You can’t be getting all friendly with thieves.”

“I don’t think she’s a thief, John. She is too nice a lady!” Billy protested.

“A lady who wears a mask?”

“Ahem.” I spoke up. “I wear a mask because I have an awful scar on my face. I do not wish to expose it to the world.”

“Oh I’m sorry.” Billy said, and winced at the elbow Johnny stuck in his ribs. “What happened?”

“I was in a fire as a little girl. My face was burned bad.”

“Oh no! What a tragedy!”

“Billy, shut your mouth!”

“John I don’t have to do what you say! Just because you are older then me don’t mean you can boss me around!”

“I’m your bloody brother! I can boss you around all I want!”

Ah ha! A heated argument. Perfect. Nothing is quite so distracting. I used their lapsed attention to examine my cell. There was one window. It had bars on it, but luckily the bars are wooden. The window is not very large, but I am slim enough to slide through.

I heard sudden silence from the guards and I whipped around. Ah. I saw they were struck dumb. But by what? I followed their gazes to see that there in the doorway were three women.

I know those faces… The Four had evidently gotten into my wig collection. Hannah was a red head, which was comedy in itself. Katie was a brunette and Ali was quite blonde. Even if I knew where they got their wigs, where they had found those clothes were another matter all together. I was astounded to see my friends in outfits that whores would want to own.

I was eager to see how they would act. I assumed they were here to rescue me. Thank god. I do not particularly want to hang. I was a bit worried though, they are all very attractive and guards are not known for being chivalrous. They will need to escape with me… but how to do that.

Katie stumbled forward and giggled. Ah. I see she is playing a drunk. She put a finger up to her lips and giggled again as she tried to shush the guards. “Shhh, don’t tell anyone we are here.” Her intended whisper was actually quite loud.

“Betsy!” Hannah hissed and rushed forward. “Be quite we don’t want to be caught do we?”

Ali licked her lips and put a hand on her hip. She looked over John slowly, “ I don’t know. I think I might like being caught.” Heh. John blushed as he understood the innuendo.

“Hey… you’re cute.” Katie giggled and stumbled forward towards Billy. She fell against him. “Oops! Sorry…”

Billy blushed too. I almost pitied him. He is so young, Katie will have no problem taking advantage of him. She is older and her chest is, er, bounteous. And practically hanging out from the extremely low bodice.

Ali strutted slowly towards John. She stood right in front of him and gave him the most lecherous look I think I have ever seen. “So…” She leaned close to him. “You seem to be a big strong guard.” I think she was close enough so that her breath brushed his neck. John was bright red. I tried not to giggle.

Hannah leaned back, “Hm. Well, looky here. Instead of being caught we have captured to fine men. I think we should help to such fine gentlemen relax. What do you think ladies?”

“Oh yes.” Ali’s voice was low. I couldn’t really see but I think her hands were on his chest.

“That sounds fun!” Katie giggled and tripped again. This time she knocked Billy over. She was laying on top of him. “Oops!”

“Mary, get the door.” Ali ordered.

“Absolutely.” Hannah obeyed eagerly. Once she made sure the door was firmly secured she gave a little nod to me. Then her eyes moved up towards my one window. I understood her silent message and turned around. Sure enough outside the window was Dare. He had a rather vicious knife in his hand and was sawing away at the bars.

“Hey!” I heard Billy yell.

“Bugger..” John muttered second later.

I turned to find that Katie was now straddling Billy and had a knife at his throat. Ali had John pinned up against the bars of my cell and had him in a similar situation.

“Lioness.” Hannah said as she walked over to me. “When I heard about your trouble I simply had to round up the girls to help you.” Hannah has made herself sound like the Madame of a brothel.

“How sweet of you!”

“Quite. Lucy, Betsy, keep an eye on our fine fellows. I would hate for any accidents to occur because of a rash action of theirs. Which one has the key?”

“This one does.” Ali told her. She threw them to Hannah, and surprisingly she caught the keys. Hannah has never been known for her catching ability. Or her aim…

“Excellent. Lioness I am sure you can think of something to do with these… I have two boys I need to tie up.” I was handed the keys and Hannah began pulling things out from under her skirt.

I unlocked the door and went out to help Katie tie up Billy. After we gagged him was stood him up against the bars and tied his wrists together on the other side. I doubt they will be able to get free on their own. Especially when we relock the cell and place the keys in the far corner of said cell.

“Devil May Dare!” I said and went over to the window. “How are you doing?”

“Lioness, what a pleasure to see you.” Dare gave me a cheeky grin. “I am almost done with these pesty bars. We will have you free in no time.”

“Lovely. Now if you excuse me I need to go deal with these two miscreants.” I walked over so I was facing my guards. “John, Billy, we had some fun times. I will always be indebted for your services. Now I am going to escape now and I need you two be good little boys and not make a ruckus. Will you do that for me?” Both nodded quickly eyes wide. I don’t know if it was because I am the Lioness of because behind me Ali and Katie were still wielding their daggers. I smiled at them, but then remembered I was still wearing my mask. Damn. Masks can be annoying sometimes. Instead I nodded, “That good. Now when you two grow up I am sure you will be the best guards. One because you will learn from this escapade and two because you will be legends. You have just let the Velvet Lioness escape. Now your names will be immortalized.” Although I do not think it will be in the way they want it to be.

“My dears,” Dare called. “Your escape awaits you.”

“Shall we?” Hannah asked as she flounced into the cell. Ali and Katie followed. I picked up the rear and relocked the door. I dropped the keys in the farthest point away from the bars.

“Good bye boys.” I told them as I reached up. Two strong hands grabbed mine and pulled me through.

“Quickly now.” Hannah whispered. We went into an alley. “Here.” She produced a dress that I might wear. It was perfect.

“Now don’t forget to take off your mask.” Ali reminded me. “And we should all switch wigs.” We did the exchange. Now I was the red head and Ali was the brunette.

“Where are we going now?” Katie asked.

Dare answered her, “The Lion’s Den. We will split up. Katie and Hannah will come with me. Ziza, you follow with Ali.”

It was a good plan. We would much more difficult to recapture if we were split apart.

Once we were walking, I asked Ali a question, “How did this all happen?”

She knew what I meant. “Well. I guess as soon as you were captured. Mr. Hunter went to find us. Apparently he thought we would be useful in rescuing you.”

“Who did he seek out first?”

“Me. Then we split up. I went and fetched Katie and Hannah. Mr. Hunter went back to your house to steal some wigs and costumes. He met us at Katie’s home.”

“Those costumes are not mine, I don’t think I want to know where he got them.” I told her.

Ali shrugged, “No matter. He had also hired a blank carriage. We took it to you. We changed in the carriage.”

I gaped at her. Of course around each other we no not care about modesty. However Mr. Hunter was a man! And he was one we do not know so well. “What?! Have you no maiden modesty?”

“Oh pish. We blindfolded him and made him face a corner. He did not see anything he did not need to.” Ali waved off my concern.

I was not so easily swayed. “Still… he is a young man and you all are attractive.” Oh god. Now that he has seen my friends in their under things he will never like me.

“I don’t think he looked. He is honorable. And Hannah was uttering bodily threats if he peeked.”

“Hm. Well what happened next?”

“We left the carriage a block away from you. Then as we neared the station we separated. Dare stayed outside and we four snuck in.”

“How did you find me?” I asked.

“That was trickier.” Ali admitted. “We were sneaking around until Hannah finally became impatient. She seduced some guard into telling us where you were being held.”

“She did?!”

“Well she didn’t seduce him completely. Honestly. Hannah has the highest morals of all of us. She just flirted like the rest of us.” Ali smirked, “Of course it helped that she indicated that we would all be interested in, erm, yielding him favors if he told us.”

“At the same time?!”

I think Ali rolled her eyes, “Why yes. Of course. That incentive was too juicy for him to resist.”

“Good god.” I muttered. Ali and walked towards the Den. We would be there in a few minutes. Then a council of war would convene. It is a rather melodramatic way to describe it, however I don’t think it is any less accurate.

Before I knew it we were there. We before we walked in I put back on my mask. I cannot have Earnest or any of the other criminals that mingle at the Den learning my identity can I? Once I was finished we entered. “Hello Earnest.” I said.

“Lioness.” He answered with a nod. He then handed me a key.

“Thank you very much!”

I led Ali up to the room. Hannah, Katie and Dare were already there. All three heads whipped towards us as we entered. It was interesting to see what they were doing while they waited. Katie was fidgeting by the window. Hannah was leaning back in a chair. She looked bored. Dare was standing, but I think he was actually pacing. Pacing is always a sure sign of nervousness and worry. Was he actually concerned for me?

“There you are!” Dare said when we entered. I listened for relief in his voice, but I didn’t hear any.

I looked around and asked, “Where is Jamie?”

“He is coming. I sent a messenger for him as soon as we arrived at the Den.” He replied.

“You do know where he is right?”

“No, he just sent the messenger out on some obscure mission to deliver a note to a man we don’t know the whereabouts of.” Hannah quipped from her seat.

I ignored her and went to my usual seat by the fireplace. “I have news.” I announced. “I know how I was caught.”

“Really? You mean other then the men tying you up?” Ali posed.

“How?” Dare’s answer lacked the sarcasm that the Four’s contained.

“The police received a tip. They followed through and found me.” I took a deep breath, “The tip was frown Thomas Brown.”

“Mr. Brown?!” Katie gasped.

I heard Dare swear under his breath and watched as he ran a hand through his hair. “I knew we should have killed the bastard.” He muttered.

“No.” I said, “Killing is always bad. We don’t need to kill him now. I think we should ignore him. I mean, he failed didn’t he? That should discourage him right?” I received looks that all pronounced me a fool for my statement. I felt a little insulted. “What? It could be true.”

“Liza Liu you do remember that you are dealing with criminals right? They are dishonest by definition.” Ali reminded me.

“Even me?” I asked.

Hannah raised her eyebrows at me, “How many people know you are the Velvet Lioness?”

I was feeling very exasperated. “I think we should talk to Mr. Brown. Once we confront him in person. Once I confront him, I am sure he won’t cause further problems.”

“Umm hmm.” Hannah murmured, and then spoke up. “Or, we could kidnap him and threaten to geld him unless he stops.”

Katie raised her hand, “I like that idea.”

“No, no no!” I muttered. However my friends weren’t listening to me. I really don’t think that threatening him will solve any problems. It is just going to make everything worse. I think I just need to talk to him face to face and apologize. I am sure he just feels offended over what happened.

Jamie arrived. “What is going on?” he boomed from the doorway. “What is the big emergency?” He walked in and noticed the Four. “Why are they here?”

Before I could answer his questions Dare spoke, “The Lioness was captured.”

“What?!” Jamie looked outraged and shocked. “Well, lets go get her!”

I stood up, “I am here Jamie.”

“Good. Now will someone please explain what is going on to me?”

“Fine.” Hannah stood up as well. “Here is a quick recap. Dare and Eliza were stealing the stuff, then the police came. Dare escaped with goods and Eliza was caught. While in prison she found out that Thomas Brown had tipped off the police. Then Ali, Katie, and I assisted in Eliza’s escape. After that we came here and waited for you to show up.” Once she was finished she sat down again. Sometimes Hannah’s bluntness can be put to good use.

I think Jamie’s face was getting red with anger. I can’t really tell in this light. “What?! That bloody bastard told the police?!” he swore loudly.

“Yes.” Dare said. “We are not trying to decide what to do about him.”

Ali voiced her opinion, “And his stalking ways. He needs to stop spying on Eliza.”

“I suggested that we castrate him with a dull spoon.” Hannah mentioned. I don’t think she noticed, but both men winced a little bit.

“I just don’t think that is a good idea.” I said. “I need to talk to him. We merely need to sort out our differences. Once that is done, I think he won’t bother me.”

Just like the others Jamie rolled his eyes at my proposal. “Elle, we already attempted to talk to him. It obviously did not work. We need to do something more drastic.”

“We have already ruined him socially. He will not be accepted into good society.” Ali informed Jamie. “After the incident at Almack’s we could not allow him to come in contact with Eliza in public.”

“Although that has not stopped him from stalking her.” Katie pointed out. “I think that she is an obsession for him. This is away for him to stay in contact with her.”

I was becoming vexed that they were talking about me as I was not standing right beside them. I decided it was time to remind them of my presence. “He is not obsessed with me.” I muttered with an eye roll.

Neither escaped Hannah’s notice. “Liza, are you oblivious? He knows your identity that means he has followed you. He knew when and where your operation was taking place, which means he listens to your conversations. He wants to be your middleman. He stalks you. He must have seen you in your home; in your bedroom. As you changed and took the mask off. If that does not scream obsession, then I do not know what does.”

At this moment Hannah’s bluntness was not welcome. What she says makes sense, however it is so creepy! To think of that man watching me as I changed; in the private of my bedroom. Oh god, he probably has seen where I keep you! I wonder if he has broken into my room. I wonder if he has read you. What a disgusting lecher.

I looked silently at Dare. He had been surprisingly quiet throughout the whole exchange. I wanted to know what he was thinking, what he thinks I should do. He looked so serious and solemn. It was a strange expression to see on his face, although it almost improve his features, if that were possible. I had just sent another silent plea that he would voice his thoughts when he complied. Dare looked up at us and met my eyes briefly. “I think we should kill him.”

“Oh hell no!” I had not realized that I had uttered that out loud until I noticed the curious looks everyone was giving me. I think I blushed a bit. “Even if Mr. Brown is a bastard, I will not be responsible for the murder of an innocent man.”

“Elle, this man is far from innocent.” Jamie said.

“Still.” I crossed my arm. “Killing him is not going to solve anything!”

“It will solve everything!” Dare exclaimed.

I think I actually raised my voice, “I won’t kill someone!”

Jamie commented then, “You won’t have to. We can get Shadow to send his best after the fool. There is some loyalty within the Lions. I am sure he won’t even charge you full price.”

I rounded on Jamie now, “Why can’t you understand that I won’t allow Mr. Brown to be killed?!”

“You know,” Hannah said from her seat. “You don’t have to kill him. There are a few other options for keeping him away forever.”

“Oh? And what are those?”

“You could tip off the police with one of his illegal activities. He will either go to jail for a very long time, or if we are lucky hang.” I opened my mouth to say something but Hannah put a hand up to stop me. “It wouldn’t be your fault. All we would have done is alert the proper authorities of his dealings. It is up to them what they do with him.” She glanced at me to make sure I wasn’t going to attempt to interrupt her again. “You could always get him out of England. Make him leave by force or money. In the Americas or Australia he would not cause you any problems.”

Hannah’s last idea appealed to me the most. While I do not wish Mr. Brown to be dead, I do not particularly like the idea that he is able to bother me.

The others also seemed to like the idea. Jamie was nodding slowly, “Yes in Australia he could not bother us. Also there are so many criminals there already, he could still continue his business there.”

“I like the idea.” Katie chirped from her seat.

Dare did not seem to find any part of it objectionable either, “That is a suitable solution.” He assented.

All eyes then turned to me. I know I had the final say on the plan, I also know that my friends would not hesitate to act on my behalf. Even if I didn’t like their plan, if they all thought it was best, no doubt would they act upon it. Everyone was waiting on me to say something, I did not keep them long. “Personally I think it is a good plan.” Everyone smiled at my approval. “However,” the Four groaned at my objection. I still continued as though there had been no interruption. “How will we get Mr. Hunter to go to Australia. And once he is there, how do we keep him there?”

“Why that is simple.” Ali replied. “We tied him up, stick him in a barrel and mail him to Australia. Once the barrel gets there it will have specific instructions that its occupant be chained to the land.”

“Ummm hmmm.” I murmured, “Good idea, but I don’t think it will work.”

“I doubt that getting him to stay will be very difficult.” Jamie supposed. “Especially we have all his money transferred into Australian accounts. The difficult part of the plan will be getting him to leave. “

“I am not actually against forcing him into exile.” I allowed. “We should buy him a ticket. The day the ships leaves we will tie him up and toss him on deck, ticket strapped to his chest. “ I told the group.

“Good god Eliza.” Hannah muttered, “Are you actually suggesting we do something other then confront him?”

I severely wished to roll my eyes, however I restrained myself. ”Yes.”

Jamie smiled and clapped his hands together. “Good. I am glad we have this planned. Now I am going to go talk to Shadow.” My gaze whipped over to my teacher and narrowed suspiciously. He put his hands up in defeat, “I am not going to have him killed. However I think it would be good to have one of the assassins keeping an eye on him until he leaves.”

“Speaking of leaving…” Hannah said as she stood. “We really must return to our homes. I am sure we are causing a scandal as it is. Come on Ali, come one Katie.”

They stood and joined Hannah by the door. Ali turned to Jamie, “I don’t suppose you could hire us a carriage could you?”

“Indeed I could.” Jamie answered with a smile. “Come ladies, I shall assist you in your return.”

Good byes were said and before I knew it, only Dare and I were left. For some reason I felt nervous with it only being us two. It had never bothered me before, however tonight seclusion seemed much more prominent. Perhaps it was because Dare was not his usual smirking, sarcastic self. I do not truly know this new serious Dare.

I sat down on the chair. Dare still hadn’t moved. I was feeling so awkward; I started cleaning my nails for something to do. Then I realized what I was doing and ceased. However I think I then started up something equally annoying and unladylike. I began tapping my foot. In my defense I was singing a song in my head and was merely tapping my foot with the beat. I did not mean to be impatient.

“Ziza.” Dare’s low voice startled me.

I thought he found my foot tapping annoying, so I stopped quickly. “Sorry.” I murmured.

“No it wasn’t that.” Dare said. Then he made a sound of frustration and ran a hand through his hair. He does not usually do that.

“What is it?” I asked. “What’s wrong? Did I do something?” The last question slipped our before I could stop it.

“What?” Dare looked at me. “No, no of course not. It is nothing you did. It is what I did.”

“What did you do? Remind me for I seem to have forgotten…”

“I left you! I abandoned my partner!” Dare’s voice was bitter.

“You did not.” I told him firmly. “What could you have done? Gone in there and gotten caught with me? You acted correctly. I was caught, however I escaped. Thanks to you. Doesn’t that count for something?” I stood and walked over to where he was standing by the window.

“No. No it doesn’t. It was a quick recover for an original mistake. A mistake I should never had made. I mean bloody hell! Look at you!”

I felt alarm sweep through my body and I touched my face, “What is wrong with me?”

“Nothing is wrong with you.” Dare amended in a soothing tone. He reached up and pulled my hand away from my face. I was keenly aware that he had not let go of it, instead he was hold it, palm down. He looked down at my hand, and I saw, to my dismay, that is was bruised and bloody. My wrist was no better. “You were beaten. That should not have happened, it should have been me.” He still had not looked up.

I tried to distract him from my disgusting hand, “You should have been beaten? Why? Explain that to me.”

“I could have withstood it.” Dare’s icy blue eyes looked up and met mine.

He was making my keenly aware of how much pain I was in. I had been ignoring it successfully until then. “Yes you could have. However so could I. I did withstand it. It wasn’t so bad.” I tried to smile, but it did not work as my head began pounding and I winced. My expression turned out to be more of a grimace. “Do you think we could sit down?” I used my free hand to touch my head gingerly. All I really wanted to do was lay down in my bed. Or at least the bed in here.

“Yes of course. I am sorry you must be in pain. Can I get you something? Here, let me get you some laudanum. ” Dare seemed actually concerned. He lead me over to the bed. If my head did not hurt so much I would have been suspicious of his motives. Leading me to bed. Really now. I took the laudanum before we were at the bed.

As soon as we reached it, I lay down. I was thankful that Earnest makes enough money off of bribes that he is willing to indulge in nice beds. I sighed as I sank into the mattress. I was very sleep all of a sudden. Then again, it had been a long day. And sleep seemed like a good way to deal with my pounding head. I then remembered that Dare and I had been in a conversation. I struggled to sit up, “I am sorry, what were you saying?”

“Shhh.” He whispered softly. “It doesn’t matter. We can talk about it later. You lay down.”

“Oh good.” I murmured and sank back down.

I was dimly aware that Dare was taking off my shoes. Then the slutty dress Hannah had given me. I was not overly concerned with either act. I was still wearing my thieving suit under the dress so I was perfectly modest. I began dozing then, however I think Dare began washing my feet. Odd. Do most men was a woman’s feet? I am sure mine are repulsive. When I awoke next he was gently washing my hands. Then I think he pushed up my sleeves and washed my arm. What I noticed next was that he was gently sponging my head and face. Both no doubt had blood on them. I don’t like to think of the condition of my hair.

One particular thing I remembered why Dare was treating my injuries was the look in his beautiful eyes. They were not so icy as they usually were. Although still light blue, they looked as if he was concerned for someone he cared about. While I am aware that this revelation occurred while I was under the influence of the laudanum, I think there could be a chance that Dare cares for me.

When I awoke it was dark outside. It is a good thing Mother is out of town for a few days, otherwise she would be frantic with worry. I pushed myself into a sitting position and noticed that my hands had been bandaged. I also noticed that Dare was asleep on the bed.

He was obviously not in bed with me. He was sitting in a chair by the bed and was slumped onto it. I was reminded of when he told me that he naps often. It is his main mode of rest. He looked so peaceful that I did not want to wake him. He had changed out of his thieving suit into a normal one. However his cuffs were rolled up, the vest was undone and the collar was also loose. I liked how he looked this way. He will always be devilishly handsome in a tuxedo. This look is much more relaxed. I have no doubt that this is how he dresses in private.

I too wished to change. I slipped out of the bed silently and went over to my chest. Earnest always places in whatever room he put me in. It has emergency items in it. Knives, clothes, medicine, money…. I know I had a simple dress of mine in there. It was worn and therefore comfortable. Not something that could be considered fashionable by any stretch of the word. I noticed the screen was not set up. No doubt Earnest was told that I would not need it. Ug. Oh well it is good Dare is asleep; he will not see me. I stripped own to my under garments. There I paused and examined my injuries. I was badly bruised, however I do not see that skin was broken and there were definitely no broken bones. I wiped down my body quickly with a damp clothe then slid my dress on. When it I had pulled down over my head, I realized that Dare’s eyes were open. He had been watching me.

I blushed fiercely. I did not know how long he had been watching. This dress of mine buttoned in the front. I quickly turned around and finished buttoning it. I tried schooling my expression into something a little less red, however I was not having much luck. I settled on ignoring the man. Instead of addressing him, I went over grabbed my brush. I unbraided my hair and began combing it out. I heard Dare stand behind me and walk towards me. I think my back stiffened more then it was already.

“I apologize.” Dare said gruffly. He sat down across from me. “I did not mean to watch you.”

“It is alright.” I muttered. I was not yet able to meet those pale eyes of his. Those damned pale eyes.

“Look Ziza,” Dare sighed. “I do not think I can be your escort anymore.”

I froze. It was like my blood had turned to ice. Why couldn’t he be my escort? Was it because he saw my body and found me to repulsive to be around me? That is not fair. He cannot just stop being my escort halfway through the season damnit! I placed the brush down much more calmly then I felt. I needed something to do. So I continued with my hair. I was able to softly say, “Very well. Thank you. I quite enjoyed our time together.” Then I stood and walked away. All the way to the window. When I noticed he had not moved, I summoned up my courage again. “You may go now. Thank you for your kindness, and now goodbye.” I was not able to turn around to face him and those icy eyes of his that hold rejection.

“Why would I want to leave?” Dare asked.

Bloody hell. He is making this difficult, isn’t he? I took a deep breath, “You do not wish to be my escort any more. You obviously would not wish to be stuck in my company any longer either.” I tried and failed to keep a bitter note out of my voice.

“Eliza,” I heard the scrape of the chair as Dare stood up and walked towards me. I still would not face him so he stood behind me. “Eliza I don’t wish to be your escort because I want to be your suitor.”

I whipped around to face him when he said that. I could not believe it. I am sure my face had an expression of shock to it. “Truly?” I asked.

“Yes of course.” Dare took my hands, my poor bandaged hands in his. “Eliza, I have grown to care for you a great deal. More then a friendly escort should. I-“ He let go of one of my hands and ran his free hand through his hair. “I am making a complete mess of this.” He let out a low chuckle.

“Oh Dare.” I whispered. I was so very happy. With a squeal of delight I flung my arms around his neck.

He seemed surprised, but happily so. Dare laughed and wrapped his arms around me. I looked up at him. “I thought you only thought of me as a friend.” I told him.

He let out a rakish grin, “I did. At first.”

I rolled my eyes. “Fool.” I muttered.

Dare’s grin turned into something nicer, “However after spending time in your company I found myself thinking of you in a quite different way.”

I think if it is possible, my grin grew wider. “Darius you are a very silly man.” I said.

“Yes.” His grin was back, “It is one of my great flaws. So, my dear,” His gaze met mine. “Can I guess from your reaction that you reciprocate the feelings?”

I blushed and looked down and uttered a small, “Yes.”

Dare laughed loudly, “That’s my girl.”

I pulled away from him and went to sit at the table. I was hungry and there was some bread there. “You do realize what this means, don’t you?” I asked him.

“What does this mean?” Dare’s grin had not faded an inch, and I doubt mine had either.

“It means the Four will be taking complete credit for this whole mess.”

“Mess?” He raised an eyebrow.

“You are well aware of what I mean.”

“Why will they be taking credit for this again?”

“Well,” I swallowed my bite. “They arranged an introduction…”

“Ah yes,” Dare said wistfully, “The ‘accidental’ trip.”

“And they forced you to be my escort…”

“Pure extortion on that part.”

I rolled my eyes at his quips. “Perhaps. Either way they shall be crowing for months.”

Darius nodded, “Yes. But they are excellent gels. Do you realize that I did not come up with the rescue plan?”

“If you did not then who did?”

“The Four. I provided the facts and they provided the plan. I was truly only manpower in the entire operation.”

I understood, “We do tend to take over things.”

“It is very well that they did, because I was not thinking clearly from the moment you were captured. I am amazed I even thought to seek your friends’ assistance. “ Dare said with a nod.

“It seems you are more intelligent then you thought yourself.”

“Perhaps.”

I glanced at the clock, “I should go home.”

Dare did not look too pleased at that idea, “How are you planning on getting home? Not climbing I hope.”

“No,” Even I knew that I should not do that. “I was planning on riding.”

“I shall join you.” It was not a request.

I almost wanted to protest. He did not need to ride with me all the way to my home. However I did not particularly want to part with his company. I think this won’t the last time he is availing his company on me. I truly do not mind…

So much has happened and it is only mid season! Hopefully the second half won’t be so exciting… However I doubt my life will ever be calm and sedate between Dare and the Four. Oh well, who truly wants a boring life? I think I shall enjoy the shenanigans that shall ensue….

THE END

A/N: So here is the end. I didn’t think it was this short. I guess so… Well? What do you think? I need reviews!! Thank you!!
