you can miss another person

and you love her even though

you’re both competing

for the same scholarship

and you don’t call

her stupid but instead

you call her every night

to tell her you hope

she gets it even if

it means you’ll have

to take that job at

steak n shake to pay for college

and you buy her flowers

just because you want

her to feel special

because her parents never did

and you act embarrassed

when she starts crying

(because of the flowers)

but secretly you’re proud

and surprised that you

could make her that happy

but mostly
