Two months later

I knock on the door.

It’s dark, as night has fallen, and I was collecting yet another gifted. Why? Well, somehow someone accelerated time and space, and I got left with the dirty work.

Fun? Not even.

“Hello?” someone says from inside the door, timid like a tiny child. I move in the shadows of the maple tree next to the door, managing to make myself invisible to the person on the other side.

A head pokes out past the wood and screen and glass, a little silver mop searching for an unseen threat.

“You’re the one called Shy?” I ask, still immobile from my position.

The kid pivots on the porch, staring directly at me. “What do you want? What do you know?”

“Come with me. You can’t hide much longer….”
