Ugly Rejection
“Hey Diego, can you wait for me? Walk with me to my locker,” I said.
“Uhh,” he hesitated, “I guess.”
The first floor, where my locker is located, was especially crowded. People were running around and guys were shoving their tongues into their girls’ mouth. Teachers were hurrying in and out of their classrooms and they didn’t even care about the whole touching thing. I have to admit, as I eyed my old friend, Cindy, being nuzzled on the nose by this new student Pedro, I felt a little bit jealous and lonely.
“So we’re here,” I said when we managed to make it safely to my locker. I opened the combination lock in five seconds, took out my textbooks and shoved it quickly in my bag.
I was about to sling the arm of the backpack on my shoulder when something in Diego’s eye caught my eye. It wasn’t something per say it was just this look in his eyes. He looked…sleepy. But something more important than that, he looked as if he didn’t care or as if everything around him was so above or even beneath him that he didn’t notice, but in a good way. I always thought he was kind of cute, I guess-with his short tangled hair and careless attitude and just this thing that eluded from him-his eyes were okay I suppose, a simple hazel and his physique, well he wasn’t the tallest or fittest guy in the school, but he was okay.
“Err…Diego?” He didn’t hear me; he was busy staring into space, probably thinking of artificially intelligent machines, or something eccentric.
“Diego?” I tried again.
“Huh?”
“Well,” I twiddled with my thumbs a bit. Just a bit. “Do you think we could, you know ever go out?”
He looked at me blankly, and I smiled shyly just to make sure he got the right impression.
“Uh no offense, Kate but I don’t like you.”
“Oh-really I mean it could be purely experimental-”
“Er…no. I really don’t like you-you’re not that attractive, sorry. And um, I didn’t even really wanna wait for you at your locker. You’re annoying and I’m sorry to put it bluntly-actually I’m not; but, yeah. That’s it.”
“Oh…well…you’re a bitch.”
