Fearful
I smile to conceal the pain I hide,
I keep it locked inside my secret heart.
They tell me I’m good at veiling things,
I’ve learned to transform it into an art.
These eyes have seen things you’ve seen in nightmares,
These hands have touched things that left me broken,
These wounds leave me with scars I bear with shame,
These ears have heard words that hurt when spoken.
I’ll never be the same….
Because I’m fearful.
Look behind these eyes that stare straight through you,
They lead to pages of my history.
Let them bring you a future warning,
Of people who were never meant to be.
These eyes have seen things you’ve seen in nightmares,
These hands have touched things that left me broken,
These wounds leave me with scars I bear with shame,
These ears have heard words that hurt when spoken.
I’ll never be the same….
Because I’m fearful.
When I remember, I feel safe inside my fear,
It’s a sheltered place to be.
While I am there, I can scream inside myself,
And shed tears one cannot see….
Because I’m fearful.
