Epilogue
Cassidy was at work when her phone beeped. She picked it up. The display read: CLAIRE.
“Hey, honey, what’s up?”
“I did it!” Claire’s voice rang through the small cell phone. “I found my mugs – all three of them! You’ll never guess where they were?”
“Tell me,” Cassidy answered, dropping all pretense of working. She crossed to a chair in her office and plopped into it, preparing for a good story. “Omit no details, no matter how small they may seem.”
“Okay.” Claire took a deep breath. “Do you remember this one client I had, the woman who wanted to sue the wind?”
“Oh, her. Yeah, I totally remember her. What an idiot. Go on.”
“Well, I was staying late at work last night – which I hardly do now that Mr. Yummy lives with me – and this cleaner came in. And I recognised her. I thought, I’ve seen her before. And I haven’t forgotten how cross she was about me refusing to take her case. So I left the office, taking my bag with me, and hid in the ladies room for a second.”
Cassidy scooted on to the edge of her seat. “Drama-ville. Then what happened?”
“Then, I came out of ladies room in time to catch her wheeling her cart past. I cornered her. She had my current mug in her cart. I yelled at her. She confessed everything.” Claire let out a long sigh. “I feel so good. Man, did I kick her ass.”
Cassidy laughed. “So, are you pressing charges?”
“No, she said she’d give them all back. Even if she doesn’t, she’ll be fired, and the fact that I caught her makes up for losing my mugs.” Claire paused, and Cassidy heard noises that sounded suspiciously like kissing. “I’ve got to go,” Claire told her friend. “But I wanted to share the good news!”
More kissing sounds. Then Cassidy heard a long sigh. The person sighing sounded very aroused – that was Cassidy’s cue to hang up. She did, with a laugh, shaking her head. And then she went back to work.
