And we
built a kingdom out of sand and lime
And patted
down the turrets, crisp in autumn light
We
smoothed our princess-tower out with flimsy shells
And
sculpted stone-steps for her summer-knight.
The birds
would hang today over our palace
While
seagulls sway with jutting necks above the shore
And in our
laps the pixie-elves have come to clamber -
Our songs
are lost behind wind’s tattered roar.
A realm
we’ll craft for you this morning
Your fever-eyes will watch the flags crane to the
lee
And oh!
The petals of your shrunken glory –
We’ll
scatter them across the swollen sea.
