So Much the Same

I lift the sheets to find your hand

Just like I saw my mom had

It's not as emaciated as your dying body

It looks like it always has

And so the tears come, stinging my eyes

So much the same, yet so different

I gently slip my hand into yours

Your hand is warm and so alive

It's a perfect fit, my hand in yours

Just like it has always been

And so the tears come, stinging my eyes

So much the same, yet so different

I squeeze your hand, just to say I'm here

I imagine your fingers twitch and squeeze back

But they're perfectly still

Unlike the way it has always been

And so the tears come, stinging my eyes

So much the same, yet so different

I whisper I love you, all choked with tears

I lean over and give you a soft kiss

A kiss like all the others over the years

But this time, you don't smile back

And so the tears come, stinging my eyes

So much the same, yet so different.
