Chapter Four
--
"What do I need to know about it if I can already summon it?" Kyra said sighing, of course it had to be more complicated than what she had done.
"There are different levels of Kyouko, some kinds are more powerful than others, but dangerous to use while fighting. Happiness is the least strong because it isn't a very stimulating emotion, next is love, then sorrow and the strongest is anger. Anger is dangerous and there is a very small chance that it could start taking over your body. There are only a handful of cases where the user got overtaken," Ethan said feeling kind of like a textbook. "But they went insane and acted like animals, purely on instinct. They killed and mutilated people."
"It sounds dangerous. I don't know if I like it so much anymore," Kyra said a little scared.
"You just need to learn how to control it, being overtaken is very rare," Ethan said, he wanted to steer the conversation away from the dangerous part. "So what emotion did you use to summon the Kyouko?"
"I don't think I felt anything," Kyra said looking down at her hands. It had been so strange, her mind went blank and she summon more of the cold air to her hands. Ethan was quiet, just thinking about what he had read about earlier. It was possible that Kyra had been born to the Apathy Kyouko sign. It was rare, but it did happen, and if Kyra was the demon hunter then it kind of made sense that she would have an ability that surpassed any Apathy Kyouko user.
"Umm.. Ethan, did I say something wrong?" Kyra said worried by the look on his face, he was so deep in thought.
"No Kyra, you will be extremely powerful, just like I told you. Being able to summon Kyouko using apathy is very rare and very powerful," Ethan said smiling. Kyra smiled back, this might be kind of cool; she used to dread the thought of having to fight demons but with her new ability she wasn't as worried. "And being born to the Apathy Kyouko sign means that you have an extremely high tolerance to the effects of Kyouko and will probably never be taken over," he said trying to reassure her.
"Well that's good," she said. "Now I don't have to worry about going crazy and killing everyone," she said lacing sarcasm through every syllable.
"Very funny," Ethan said looking up at the sky. "The sun is starting to go down. We should go inside for the night," Ethan said touching her back and leading her into the house.
When Kyra stepped into the main room of the house she saw there was three people sitting around a table. She was surprised, but not in a bad way. She saw an older woman and man, and a young girl. It had to be Ethan's family.
"Kyra, glad to see you up and about," Ethan's mother said to her as she stood up. "Are you hungry?" she asked wanting to do somthing with her hands.
Kyra held a hand to her stomach, "Starved."
.
Kyra was lying in bed, she had eaten and sat with Ethan's family for a while but she was tired from the training. She laid in the bed looking up at the ceiling and listening to Ethan's breath even out and slow down. She knew that he was asleep. She threw the covers off and got out of bed. She tiptoed over to the window and opened it. She was as quiet as a mouse as she slowly opened the window she climbed up onto the ledge and hopped out of the window (the room was on ground level). Kyra had been itching to get away from Ethan and explore this new world.
She walked down a winding dirt road and looked all around her. There were a lot of houses that were just off the road and some even had pretty gardens for her to look at. She walked past more and more houses and soon they all looked the same. It was twilight but she kept on moving through her drowsiness. She was tired, but it was the kind of tired that she didn't want to sleep. She had slept enough that day.
Soon she smelled something incredibly familiar. She looked up and her eyes drank in the scene that was in front of her. She had been here before. Then she saw someone crouched over only a few feet away from her. He stood up and turned to face her. Kyra gasped as she saw his face; it was Saffron. He had blood running down his chin and his eyes were blood red. He was the scary Saffron and she didn't know what to do; the thought occured to her that she could die in the next couple of minutes.
Kyra slowly backed away from Saffron, the last time she had seen him he had slashed her stomach. She stopped when she saw fear in his eyes. What could he possibly be scared of?
Saffron whiped the blood from his mouth and opened his mouth to speak, "Kyra, I'm so sorry," he said with regret in his voice. "The Demon King, he wants you killed." Saffron looked at the ground but when he looked back up at Kyra she was taking more steps back from him. "Wait, I didn't come here to kill you."
"Sure, that's what they all say before they slash your throat and eat your heart," Kyra said with wide eyes.
"No, I'm not going to kill you," Saffron said. "He assigned me the job of killing you but I knew I couldn't do it."
"Why not?" Kyra said eyeing him with curiousity.
"Because, I liked you before I knew who you were, when you couldn't see me," Saffron said looking into her eyes.
"Oh, so you like me? Thats why you're not going to kill me?" Kyra saw with awe. "Thats really lame." She didn't believe him for a second.
"I'm serious. What do you think I'm doing?" Saffron said quietly.
"Trying to catch me off guard to kill me, or making an idiot of yourself," Kyra said with confidence.
"What?" Saffron said. He couldn't understand why Kyra wasn't believing him, though it could've been because he was a demon and he was just feeding. Kyra was slowly backing away but this time Saffron took several sweeping steps over to stand in front of her. She gasped at how quick he had reached her. "You have to believe me. Please." He whispered.
"No, I don't," Kyra said getting frustrated with him. She was very intimidated by him standing so close to her. Saffron slowly reached out a hand and was going to gently hold her arm to keep her there while he explained but before he could reach her arm he was blown backwards. "Stay away from me." Kyra said in what sounded like a deep growl. The air all around her was thick and it was possible to see the air waving around her. She had summoned a field of Kyouko around her without realizing it. Her hair was blowing around in the 'wind' and she looked almost demonic.
Saffron was on the ground looking up at her. This couldn't be the same girl he had seen just days ago. She was so powerful, he knew that with this new power he wouldn't be able to get close to her. Just then the field of Kyouko vanished and Kyra bolted from the scene. Saffron didn't want to follow her and scare her even more so he went to report back to Nekomata.
.
Kyra knew that Saffron wasn't following her, but still she ran all the way back to Ethan's house. She didn't want to go back inside so she just sat on the deck and watched the darkness become light.
.
Ethan woke up and looked over to see that Kyra's bed was empty and the window open. He knew that she was stupid enough to go walking around by herself. He went to tell his mother that Kyra was missing when he saw her through the front door.
Kyra turned to look at Ethan as she heard the screen door open. "Why don't you come inside?" Ethan asked her.
"I don't want to, its so beautiful outside," Kyra said looking at the same plant-life that she had been staring at for hours.
"Did something happen?" Ethan said, Kyra was acting a little strange to him. Not like the girl he'd been with yesterday.
"I went for a walk last night. I saw Saffron," Kyra said looking at Ethan. "He said that the Demon King wants me dead and that it was his job to do it."
"I knew that he would send someone after you," Ethan said scolding himself inwardly.
"You knew and you didn't warn me? He could've killed me last night," Kyra said feeling tears start to build up in her eyes.
"You don't look hurt..." Ethan said. "Demons are ruthless, he didn't attack you?"
"Well he tried to grab my arm but.. well actually I don't know what happened. All of a sudden there was this wind all around me and he got blown off his feet," Kyra said shrugging as she said the last words. Ethan was silent again, he'd never heard of sudden wind surrounding anyone. People that tried to summon Kyouko into a field of power around them couldn't do it. To summon enough Kyouko to totally shield yourself took more power and energy than it was possible to have. Apparently he had more reading to do on Kyra's powers.
.
