Chapter One
A man appearing to be in his late thirties strolled down the large corridor, his shoes clacking on the marble floors. He was garbed all in black and as he turned a corner sharply, the hem of his cloak flung in the air behind him.
The man entered a large room with windows the reached from the ceiling to the floor, banisters between them just as long.
The man walked on a long and narrow red rug that lied in the middle of the floor, revealing a throne at the end of it.
The man kneeled on one knee and bowed his head to the man in his early fifties sitting in the chair.
“My lord.” The man said.
“Ah, if it isn’t my personal advisor. What is it with which you want?” The lord asked.
“As you can recall, last week was your one thousand and eighteenth birthday.” The advisor said as he rose to his feet.
“Yes, what of it?” The lord asked.
“The prophecy, my lord. Your thousand years of reign are officially over. When the newborn lord comes of age, the old lord must step down. Your birthday means that the new lord has come of age. He will soon come here to take what is rightfully his.” The advisor said.
The lord frowned.
“My reign as lord over both races will not cease just because a mere challenge has arisen. It is but an obstacle. I will have my men find this new lord and destroy him. I will not forfeit my position as ruler.” The lord said.
The advisor bowed and said, “As you wish, my lord. I will inform the general of your army at once to search for this new opponent.” With that he walked off.
The lord, once again alone, smirked.
“No one will overthrow me and no one will take my place until the day I die.”
“But why not?” Aaron whined.
“Because, you’re too much of a flirt. Besides, you’ve got no money to your name. Men who own farms in this town want their daughters to marry men who are wealthy enough that they will be able to take care of their daughters. You haven’t got a copper coin in your pocket.” Seth explained as they looked around.
“Which is exactly why I’m bunking with you until I can find a job.” Aaron said.
“You’ve been living with my family and me for almost a month, how much longer do you think you’ll be looking?” Seth asked.
“Seth, you’ve got to have hope. You’re too pessimistic and cynical.” Aaron told him as he watched a girl walk past them.
“No, I’m being realistic. This isn’t some fairytale that you read in stories. This is life. We’re living in a world run by vampires, while the humans are just…temporary guests. How long do you think it will be before the Vampire Lord decides that he’s had enough with us and kills us all off?” Seth said as he picked up a watermelon and shook it close to his ear, listening to the juices inside to tell whether or not it was ripe.
“They wouldn’t do that. The vampires can’t all be that evil.” Aaron said as Seth set the watermelon back down and they continued to walk.
“Can’t doesn’t mean they won’t. Not everyone in this world is good, and most of those who aren’t are of the opposite species than us. The sooner you realize that our days are numbered the better.” Seth said.
Aaron looked at Seth and said, “You seriously need to find yourself a girl.”
Seth laughed. “And what’s having a girl going to do for me?”
Aaron sighed and shook his head, looking ahead of them once again. “You’re too much of a loner. I swear that you’ve got two or three friends max.”
“The less you trust people the less you can get hurt.” Seth said gravely.
“Wha—” Aaron started, bent on asking him what he meant, before he saw a beautiful girl walking through the crowd, sticking out like a sore thumb.
Seth looked at his friend when he didn’t finish his sentence.
Aaron hit Seth in the chest and pointed ahead of them. “Hey, check her out.” He said with his jaw slightly ajar and his eyes not leaving the beautiful girl.
Seth looked where Aaron was and saw a girl who appeared to be not much younger than them, they being a bit over eighteen.
The girl had long blond hair with golden streaks in it that sparkled in the sunlight. She had red flecks dancing within her light blue eyes. Her skin was pale and she had slightly visible freckles adorning her face. The girl’s lips were a soft and natural pink. Overall, her appearance was enough to make any girl within their village jealous.
“I’m gonna go talk to her.” Aaron told Seth and then walked toward her.
Seth made a movement to stop him, but Aaron didn’t listen.
Aaron walked up to the girl and gave a small smile while saying, “Hey there. My name’s Aaron, what’s yours?”
The girl looked at him and scrunched her nose. “Are you trying to hit on me?” She asked, obviously upset if his answer was yes.
“Well…” Aaron started, scratching the back of his neck.
“Leave me alone, you’re not worth my time.” The girl said rudely.
“Hey, watch it.” Seth said as he walked toward the two, having heard the whole thing. He was practically glaring at the girl.
“A girl can get in trouble in this village for disrespecting a guy like that. And who do you think you are to be all snobbish? You’re obviously a foreigner because the girls in this village are at least a bit polite.” Seth told her icily.
The girl scoffed. “You have no right to talk to me like that. I could have you killed for your behavior.” She said, glaring at Seth.
“I’d like to see you try.” Seth said and then noticed the ruby hanging from a golden chain that was around her neck. Seth looked back up to her and sneered. “Oh, I get it. You’re a rich and spoiled kid who’s come here to see what a commoner’s life is like. Why don’t you just go back to your own home where you’ll actually fit in amongst the ‘civilized’ people?”
“Don’t you dare speak to me like that! Do you know who you’re talking to?!” The girl shouted at him, seething mad.
While she was shouting, Seth caught a glimpse at her teeth. His eyes darkened and he took on a whole new personality.
“Go home vampire, your kind is not welcome here.” He said darkly, as if an evil spirit had just possessed his body.
The girl looked surprised, usually people didn’t find out what she was this quickly.
“How did you know I was a vampire?” She asked.
“It’s obvious really. No human is rich enough to afford rubies and gold, they’re all in the possessions of the vampires. Oh, and next time, don’t open your mouth, it’ll help to hide your fangs better.” Seth said.
The girl frowned, but right before she was going to retort she got a sniff of the air and looked startled. “Why do you smell of vampire?” She asked Seth.
“What?” He asked, startled.
“It’s small, but I can definitely smell vampire on you.” The girl said.
“Probably because I’ve been talking with you too long.” Seth sneered.
“Seth!” A little girl’s voice called from the distance.
Seth looked around and then spotted the person who called his name.
“Dude, what’s she doing here? I thought she was supposed to be sewing today with your mother.” Aaron said to Seth.
“That’s why I thought too.” Seth replied. They were completely ignoring the girl by now, which she was not used to and didn’t like.
“I guess they got finished early today. We better go before she gets herself into trouble again.” Seth said to Aaron.
Aaron nodded, “Right.”
The two walked toward Seth’s little sister, leaving the girl in their dust, even angrier than before.
“Seth!” His little sister shouted in glee as she saw her big brother coming toward her.
“Brianna, what are you doing out here by yourself? You know you’re not allowed to walk around unsupervised.” Seth told his little sister as the two boys caught up with her.
“I know, but mother wanted me to deliver a special message to you and it couldn’t wait.” Brianna replied with a grin.
“Alright, what is it?” Seth asked, curious.
“She said someone named Hunter was here to see you.” Brianna said.
Seth was confused for a second but then realized what she was talking about.
“The hunters! I completely forgot all about them!” Seth exclaimed.
The girl, who had been eavesdropping, walked closer to hear better, intent on listening to their conversation for it sounded interesting.
“The hunters?” Aaron asked Seth.
“Yeah, I signed up for it a while back. Once a year a group called the hunters come to the village. They teach men at the age of eighteen and older how to defend and protect against vampire attacks. There was a list at the center where men could sign up.” Seth explained.
Aaron nodded and said, “Sounds cool.”
“Yep, and I signed you up as well.” Seth replied with a grin.
“You did what?!” Aaron shouted.
Seth shrugged and said, “Hey, it’s useful knowledge. Besides, you were bored and it could come in handy. Anyways, if you can prove that you can fight off vampires, you’ll be able to get a girl in no time.” He smiled.
Aaron sighed and said, “Gee, thanks for asking me.”
Seth smiled and said, “Now who’s the one being cynical?”
“Whatever.” Aaron grumbled.
“We’d better go to the center and check to see when the lessons will be.” Seth said.
Seth looked at Brianna and turned around, kneeling down. “Well, do you want to get on or not?” He asked with a smile.
Brianna squealed and climbed onto his back and he stood up, caring her piggy-back style the rest of the way to the center.
The girl followed as well, making sure not to be seen.
Something about Seth intrigued the girl, and perhaps it was not just because he had the sent of vampire on him. So far from what she had seen, Seth was the best looking guy in the village. Even his friend Aaron didn’t compare. Seth had a muscular and strong build, with broad shoulders and toned arms. He had black hair that came to the middle of his ears and curled a bit at the tips upward, and he hand bangs that reached just below the top of his emerald green eyes. His green eyes are what she had first noticed. They seemed to radiate a glow that just drew you in. Overall, his appearance and nicely tanned skin would exceed even those of male vampires she had met before.
When they got to the center of the village, which was nothing special, just brick covered ground and a stage built from wood in the front of it.
There was a man that looked to be in his forties standing on the stage while looking around.
“Excuse me, sir.” Seth called to the man as they approached, letting Brianna slide off of his back and stand next to him.
The man looked at the three newcomers.
“Yes?” The man asked, looking at them.
“We were wondering if you could tell us when the first lesson taught by the hunters is.” Seth replied.
“Tomorrow morning at sunrise here.” The man replied.
Seth nodded to him and said, “Thank you.”
“Hey, Aaron, you take Brianna back home, I’m going to go do something. Tell mother that I’ll be back before dark.” Seth told Aaron.
Aaron nodded and said, “Alright.” He then squatted down to look Brianna in the eye and said, “Hey, Brianna, want to race back home?”
Brianna nodded her head excitedly and enthusiastically.
“Alright. Let’s go!” Aaron said as Brianna and him began to race, both at the same speed. There weren’t very many people on the streets so they didn’t have to worry too much about dodging people.
Seth looked around and then walked toward the outskirts of town, knowing that he had a second shadow.
