Once Again

dedicated to my lover and my love

You sneak up behind me

and cover my eyes with your hands.

I'm really bad at this game,

even when it's you.

But once you slide your left hand

across both my eyes

and tilt my chin up with your right,

I know before you kiss me

that the arms of the most beautiful person,

in all the 'verse,

are wrapped around me.

And there,

nothing bad can ever happen.

When I turn around,

I gaze into your wide, child-like eyes,

the color of fresh-mown grass...

and I touch your soft lips, smothered in apricot balm

and curled into what passes for your smile...

and I run my fingers through your silky hair,

cropped short, revealing only a few inches of dirty blonde...

And we embrace.

And we kiss.

And all the while,

both of us are aware of the suffocating sorrow.

I wipe a single tear from you eye,

ignorant of those streaking my own cheeks.

The radio plays softly in the next room

and I catch some of the lyrics:

"Her lips won't touch

the demon wine,

but her eyes are full

of pure moonshine.

And I get drunk just holding her hand.

I get high thinkin' I could be her man." /

Now, I may not be a man,

and the wine bit is far from true,

but suddenly,

I know what those words mean.

What they really mean.

Because when I look into your eyes,

the world blurs.

Nothing exists, save for you.

It's like I'm spinning, spinning, spinning,

until the only one I see

is you, the one I love,

spinning there along with me. //

But as I come back to myself,

I know this sweet seclusion can never last.

And we stop spinning.

Last tears fall as we part,

hands slowly slipping away

like a slow-motion movie scene.

And I let you go.

I have to since, waiting for you,

is a better life.

But even still,

I long for the moment when, once again,

I can get lost in the sea of green,

I can brush my hands through soft sunshine,

And I can taste sweet apricot.

Once again.

/ Rascal Flats, "Dry County Girl"

// The inspiration for this comes from something I read along those lines (the spinning bit I mean) somewhere a long time ago. I'd like to give the person credit, so if anyone knows where that's from, please let me know!
