This is the new version of Invisible Girl. It's more thought out and I have an even better idea on how to portray it and everything. This is like a flashback on the early days - like I had with IG - but it's more detailed and there's more to it than just this part. Enjoy!

Blonde hair flew around carelessly in the mild wind. A light smile had fallen across the girl’s face as she took in the smells, and feelings all around her. In the distance, she could hear the faint sound of kids laughing and talking and a ball bouncing on the asphalt.

She leaned against the wall and slowly slid to the ground, happily content with being by herself. Normally she would worry about how many bugs were crawling across the ground, or how much dirt was on the wall. But today, it didn’t matter to her. She was just happy to be alive. Her warm façade was broken when a ball hit the wall forcefully just inches from her head. Her eyes flashed open and she looked ahead, frightened.

Standing a few feet away from her was a group of boys, laughing heartily at what had just taken place. She felt a blush began to spread across her face, and she grimaced as she realized how fast she was able to get embarrassed.

The girl went to her knees, and pressed against one to help herself up when a voice broke through the laughter. “Why are you doing that to her?” She froze, completely taken aback. No one had stood up for her before – at least, from what she could remember.

The laughter had halted, and the boy who had been bouncing the basketball let it slowly stop bouncing and didn’t even notice as it rolled away. “Guys? Seriously.”

“We didn’t mean anything by it man.” One cried as the girl’s ‘hero’ walked in front of them.

“Yeah, Deryck, we were just playing around.” Another one replied, trying to reason with the boy.

Rolling his eyes, Deryck turned around and walked over to where the girl knelt frozen against the ground. With a sigh, he held his hand out, “How do you always get into this kind of situation Melody?” He whispered, so the other kids wouldn’t hear.

She shrugged her shoulders, not believing she could keep from crying if she spoke. He touched her chin and reluctantly she looked up at him. “Go find Tammy.”

“She’s not here today,” Melody managed to get out, her voice barely audible. Deryck sighed once more and released the hold he had on her chin, but wrapped his arm around her shoulders and turned towards the playground.

His amber eyes scanned across the asphalt, past where the ground met the grass and back again. His eyes never stopping on one group for longer than a few beats, he began to give up when a voice piped up from behind him. “Melody, do you want to hang out with us?”

Deryck turned and was barely able to contain the sigh of relief that was bubbling inside of him. “Patti! Hey.”

Patti shot him a sparkling grin – literally. The braces that crossed her teeth shone in the bright sunlight of the afternoon. “Hey Deryck.”

Melody stood underneath Deryck’s arm, becoming more uncomfortable as the time passed. She began counting minutes as the two scholars beside her began talking. She could barely care what they were talking about, and only let a few of their exchanged words filter through her ears.

It seemed like only seconds when Deryck’s arm had left and Patti was grabbing her wrist and dragging her towards her group of friends. Making sure her hair was covering her face, she glanced back towards the basketball hoops. Deryck had been pulled into the middle of the group of boys and was being patted on the back.

Furrowing her eyebrows, Melody looked away. Why had they been patting him like he had just done something horrible, she asked herself.

A screech from in front of her made Melody refocus her attention towards where she now stood. “What did he say to you?” Randy Quinn cried, grabbing Patti’s arm and dragging her down to sit on the cement block along with the other girls. Patti giggled and grabbed Randy and Eve Jacob’s hands and talking quickly, began to explain.

Melody played with her hands and moved from foot to foot nervously. She had rarely hung around with these girls and was unsure of what to do. She moved her wrist to check her Batman watch and saw that recess would be over in four minutes and let a slight sigh of relief escape her lips.

“Melody! I can’t believe your luck!” Eve cried and grabbed Melody’s hand to drag her down to the cement ‘seat’ beside her. “How’s it like to have Deryck as a brother?”

“A twin brother, too! I can’t believe you two are twins!” Randy cried, laughing in her screechy voice.

“Umm,” Melody began but her ‘answer’ was lost with the shrill ring on the school bell.

“Oh well, time for Drama!” Patti cried, jumping up from the seat, the two other girls followed, and Melody made to stand up to put was push down when Eve flipped her bag onto her shoulder, causing it to whip around and connect with Melody’s head.

The three girls giggled profusely as they turned the corner of the school and Melody winced as she picked her hands up from off the ground. She felt her stomach churn as she saw tiny pieces of glass sticking up from the flesh in her hands. She carefully stood up from the ground and began walking towards the doors.

Occupied with the distress of her hands she was unable to catch the door as it swung shut. Hearing the click, she looked up and her shoulders dropped as she realized the doors were now closed and locked.

Closing her eyes for a beat, she turned around and began to make her way towards the front office to ask the secretary to let her in and for a bandage. Before she could turn the corner, the door opened and a voice called to her, “It’s open.”

Her heart rose. She turned and allowed a tiny smile to appear on her face as she made her way back to the door. She felt her heart flutter as she saw her brother’s best friend Matt Jenkins holding the door.

She was only a few feet from the door, when he laughed and cried, “Yeah right, Mel-fatty,” and released his hold on the door and it closed with a snap.

Her shoulders dropped again and she turned quickly to hide the tears that began welling in her eyes. She began to walk swiftly towards the wall and turned the corner to where the front of the school sat.

She was so concentrated on keeping herself from crying, she didn’t hear the kind voice that called her name from the open door.

Instead, the only thing she could hear was the laughter coming from the classrooms as she made her way to the front foyer.
