Author’s Note: Here’s the last chapter. Sorry it’s so short. Thanks to Sue for editing!
Chapter 14
“Got any three’s?” I asked, grinning as Kenny handed me two cards. It had been three days since we were rescued. Three days of my mother’s worried voice and constant presence. Three days of non-stop visitors and pain medication that made me sleep. Three days of hospital food. Yuck. Kenny finally took pity on me and brought me fast food. If there was a God, he could be found in Kenny. French fries are amazing!
“How about Queen’s?” I scowled as Kenny said ‘go fish’, picking up a card from the pile. Because of my ankle, I had been restricted to the hospital bed. I’d go home the following day once the rest of my injuries had healed enough. Apparently, those rocks had some damage when I slammed into them. Stupid raging water.
“What did Miss Dawbles say about your exam?” I sighed, throwing my cards down.
“She said that, after being stranded in the woods, almost mauled by a bear/killed by a river, and after breaking my ankle, I had made it back to school eventually. I passed for the sole purpose that I am still alive. Go figure.” I growled. I was not on good terms with her anymore. I was thoroughly fed up with my situation and if I got one more sympathy grin or apology I was going to hurt someone. I explained this to Kenny, ignoring the nurse who came in with another dose of pain pills. My ankle had started to heal on its own and the doctor had had to re-break it. It had been a painful experience on my part, one I would not wish upon anyone. A knock on the door echoed through the room and I turned to see Daren and Amy standing with balloons and flowers.
I groaned, covering my eyes with my hands. “When will it end!”
“Excuse me. I think I am insulted. You should be happy to see us. We came all the way up to visit you.” Amy skipped over and took a seat on the end of my bed beside Kenny. “Andy called us.”
“Yep. He’s down in the lobby with some blonde chick.” I scowled at Daren, my mind trying to ignore the fact that my brother was dating Nina. They had made it official two days ago. Every time I thought about it I thought I just might throw up. What he saw in her I would never know.
“You guys really didn’t need to come all the way up here. Exams start soon. I don’t want you guys to do bad.” Amy and Daren looked at each other before bursting into laughter.
“That’s funny. Do bad? Of course I’ll do bad! I always do,” Daren grinned.
“And it would take a miracle for me to do bad. I have been studying for six weeks now. I’ll do wonderful. Never you worry.” I rolled my eyes at my friends, but admitted that I was happy that they were here for even an hour. I missed them. Suddenly, a drowsy feeling came over me and I cried out. I didn’t want to fall asleep now. Kenny hopped off the bed knowingly and pushed my shoulders backwards.
“Go to sleep. We’ll see you later.”
Home sweet home. I had to admit, even with crutches, I was happy to be home. My bed was calling me and I took a quick nap before calling Amy and Daren who were staying at a hotel. That night, for the first time in six days, I ate a home cooked meal that put Paula Deen to shame. My family laughed at me as I ate a lot of everything, gobbling down my food so fast that I almost choked. After dinner, I sat out on the porch with Amy and Daren, Junior and Kenny, and Sandy and Tony. We watched the stars, cooked s’mores, and had a good time.
As I lay down to sleep that night, I couldn’t help but think of what was to come. Once exams were over, I’d have the entire summer to enjoy myself. Well, as much as I could with a broken ankle. It didn’t dampen my spirits though. I’d get to spend a lot of time with Junior now, rather than just after school. Maybe I’d get a job at the ice-cream shop in town or something. There was a whole new world of possibilities for me. I had three months ahead of me. Three months to do whatever I wanted. Oh the possibilities were endless.
So, once again I’m sorry that it is so short. And that this last chapter was crap. I know it was. Unfortunately, all my inspiration died. Excluding my last chap, I hope you all enjoyed my story. Thanks to everyone who reviewed! YOu guys rock. Especially Riley who made me laugh every time I read their reviews. I brought back Daren just for you. ) Peace out people!
Much love, Meg
