“Lilly, Come on!” the tall red haired girl called, pulling on the other girl’s arm. “You promised we’d go shopping!”
“I know Dixie, I’m here aren’t I?” the other girl, Lilly, said as she pushed her waist length, light blond hair over her shoulder before stepping out of the car.
“Yay!” the red haired girl, Dixie, cheered before she started to skip into the market, swinging her pink purse at her side. With a sigh, Lilly followed behind her friend, browsing the small stalls set up along the path.
“Hey, have you seen a tall red headed girl go by?” Lilly asked a lady, who looked to be in her fifty’s.
“The hyper girl?” the lady asked, with a distinct British accent, as she tucked a long strand of sleek, black hair behind her ear.
“Yeah, that’s her,” Lilly laughed, smiling, “Do you know where she went?”
“That way,” the lady said, pointing to the right.
“Thanks,” Lilly said before she started in the direction the lady had directed.
Lilly scanned the heads in the crowd, searching for her red headed friend. Being only five foot two, she found it pretty hard.
Reaching an opening in the crowd, Lilly searched the area around her, hoping to find her friend somewhere near.
Unfortunately, Lilly could see Dixie anywhere. She let out a sigh of frustration before scanning the crowd again. A small girl, no older then ten, stood at the edge of the crowd, her blue eyes glistening with unshed tears.
Lilly watched the little girl search the crowd for someone. Feeling like she needed to help the little girl, Lilly started over toward her, cautiously. The little girls eyes focused in on Lilly, as she got nearer.
“Hi, I’m Lilly, do you need some help finding your parents?” Lilly asked sweetly, kneeling down to the girl’s height. The little girl nodded, wiping her eyes. “Where was the last time you saw them?” Lilly asked.
“This way,” the little girl said softly before she turned and started to lead Lilly toward the edge of the market.
“What’s you’re mother look like?” Lilly questioned sweetly again.
“She has blond curly hair and dark blue eyes,” the little girl said, her voice shaking, letting Lilly know that she was about to start crying again.
“Okay,” Lilly said as she started to scan the crowd for someone that looked like the little girl’s mother.
They had reached the edge of the market before Lilly spotted the blond, distraught looking, woman, looking over the heads in the crowd frantically.
“Is that your mom?” Lilly asked, kneeling down and pointing in the direction of the woman.
“Mommy!” The little girl squealed as she started to run toward the woman.
At the girls cry, the woman’s head turned in their direction.
“Molly!” the woman cried, scooping the girl up in her arms.
Lilly stood back as the woman hugged the girl. Lilly loved reunions like this.
The mom turned and carried the little girl away. Lilly watched them go before turning around at starting back toward Dixie’s car, knowing that Dixie will go back to the car when she’s done shopping, or runs out of money.
When she reached the spot where they had parked, however, she didn’t find her friend’s car, only an empty parking space. Lilly sighed again out of frustration, “Great, just great,” She mumbled, glancing down at her watch. 6:47. She glanced up at the sky to find that it had a slight orange tint to it. It would probably be dark in the next thirty minutes, and her apartment was an hour walk away. “Just like my Dixie to forget about me.” Lilly started to drag her feet down the sidewalk in the direction of her house. It was times like this that she wished she had a cell phone.
Forty minutes later Lilly walked cautiously down a dark and deserted street, though the rain that had started to fall about fifteen minutes ago. She heard a pair of trashcans falling over and jumped. As she settled down she wrapped her arms around herself as she quickened her pace. She hated walking at night in the city, not just because it wasn’t safe, but because it was scary.
Lilly heard a few gun shots fired off in the distance and quickened her pace some more, to the point where she was almost jogging.
Voices gained Lilly’s attention as she passed by a side ally. She couldn’t make out what they were saying, but she was curious. Most people would have just brushed it off as a gang meeting and kept on walking, but Lilly wanted to know what was going on.
She walked over to the brick wall and peeked around the corner, when she only saw one person, watching her, she froze, staring into his pale, ice blue eyes. She could have sworn she had heard to different voices.
After about a minute Lilly turned to run. She turned to find a tall marred woman with sort cut, tightly curled, light brown hair and piercing silver eyes. Lilly let out a scream of surprise and backed against the wall behind her, noticing how close the woman was. A menacing smile curled onto the woman’s blood red lips.
In a flash, the woman reached out and grabbed Lilly’s arm, pulling her into the side ally and dropped her down on the ground. Lilly sat on the ground, breathing hard as the woman circled her.
“Wh-what d-do you w-want?” Lilly stammered, starting to shiver from the rain that had soaked through her cloths. Her light blond, waist length, hair lay flat, matted against her. The woman started to laugh hysterically, her silver eyes never leaving Lilly.
“Vera,” a tenor voice said, warningly from somewhere in the darkness of the ally.
“What?” the woman snapped, turning her head in the direction of the voice.
Lilly took her chance and started to get up and run toward main road. Out of nowhere, she found herself stopped, staring up into the light blue eyes of the person she had seen earlier. Lilly started to try and break free of his grasp, wanting to get free and away.
“Give her back Haynes,” the woman, Vera, demanded, hissing though her perfectly white teeth. The man shifted Lilly behind him, not letting go of her arm. Vera took a step toward Haynes and Lilly. Haynes let out a low growl, causing Vera to stand still. “It’s Elvira’s orders,” Vera stated, trying to persuade Haynes to give Lilly to her.
“Then I’ll go talk to her,” Haynes said before turning around to face Lilly. He stared down into Lilly’s dark brown eyes for a second before a small, soft smile appeared on his lips. Before Lilly had time to suspect it, Haynes had picked her up and was carrying her against his chest as he ran down the street. Lilly looked away from his face to watch where they were going. When she saw the buildings flying by at an unreal pace she let out a distressed scream and hid her face in Haynes’ shirt. She could feel his chest rumbling as he chuckled at her reaction.
