Chapter 6
“But Ma,” Teigan protested, “We can’t force her to stay here.” He had been arguing with Josephine about taking Lilly home for the last half hour and Josephine hadn’t budged in her opinion.
“Teigan, she was just attacked by several vampires,” Josephine argued, “You can’t let her leave. Besides, they’ll probably follow her, and what happens when you’re not there to stop them? Hmm?” Josephine looked up at Teigan expectantly, like she really wanted him to answer. Teigan stood thoughtfully, silently going over that problem in his mind.
“I can take her,” Teigan said like it ended the argument, but Josephine had other ideas.
“What happens when you leave?” Josephine questioned. Teigan stood silently. He was sure that Lilly probably wanted her space, and wouldn’t want him hanging around.
“I don’t know,” Teigan admitted, “But we can’t force her to stay here.”
“Why not?” Josephine asked.
“Ma, I’m sure she has friends and family who probably think she is dead or kidnapped,” Teigan explained, “She has to miss them.”
Lilly sat in the family room, alone. She could hear Teigan and Josephine arguing about something, but she could make out what they were saying.
She glanced down at her wrist, which was still wrapped in a white towel. She hadn’t even looked at her wrist, which had held a dull throbbing pain since she woke up. Lilly glanced at the door that led to the room Josephine and Teigan were in. She could still hear them arguing.
Lilly slowly unwrapped the towel from around her wrist. As she unwrapped the towel, the white cloth started to grow redder and redder with blood.
When the towel was off her wrist she stared in horror at her wrist and the many little triangular shaped red marks on her arm. An involuntary whimper emitted its self to the air from her tightly closed lips. She could feel her eyes starting to water as he forehead wrinkled up.
Lilly glanced up at the door to find Teigan and Josephine standing in the doorway. She stared at them with wide brown eyes, and Teigan knew instantly that she knew. He started over to her slowly.
“You’re a…You’re a…a…a…v…” Lilly stared up at Teigan, unable to finish her sentence.
Teigan sat down beside her, leaving enough space for her to runaway if she wanted. Lilly stayed where she was, but she kept her eyes on Teigan. She bit down on the inside of her bottom lip, not wanting to be true.
“No,” Lilly decided.
“What?” Teigan asked, confused.
“No, you’re not,” Lilly said. Teigan let out a sigh.
“Lilly, I am a vampire,” Teigan said slowly. Lilly shook her head.
“No,” Lilly stated defiantly. A small lopsided smile graced Teigan’s lips as he watched her, as she tried to convince him that he wasn’t a vampire.
“Lilly…”
“You can’t be. You don’t have fangs,” Lilly explained, her voice sounding defiant and final. Teigan pulled his lips back, letting his fangs out. Lilly watched the fangs warily for a second before going on. “You don’t drink blood.”
“You don’t know that,” Teigan countered. Lilly thought for a second.
“Then why has it been so easy for you to be around me?” Lilly asked, her voice softening a little, losing its defiance and gaining curiosity. Teigan looked away from her, suddenly finding the wall very interesting. Lilly’s forehead wrinkled in annoyance when he hadn’t answered a minute later.
“Next question?” He asked finally, glancing over at her, looking a lot like a little kid who had been caught steeling a cookie.
“No,” Lilly answered, smiling at his expression. Teigan turned his attention back to the wall.
“Idon’tdrinkhumanblood,” Teigan mumbled quickly.
“What?” Lilly questioned, not understanding what he was saying. Teigan let out a heavy sigh.
“I don’t drink human blood,” Teigan forced out. He didn’t like admitting it, but he had never wanted to drink human blood. That is one of the reasons he didn’t get along well with a lot of the other vampires.
“Oh,” Lilly said. Teigan sat watching her hoping she wouldn’t ask him to explain. “Why?”
“I just… don’t think it’s… right,” Teigan replied. Lilly nodded.
“How long?” Lilly asked.
“Huh?” Teigan glanced up at her, his ice blue eyes glowing a little.
“How long have you been a…”
“Vampire?” Teigan finished for her “Uh, about, I don’t know…”
“Try eighty-nine years,” Molly corrected as she walked into the room. “Hi Lilly,” Molly said brightly.
“Thank you Molly,” Teigan said sarcastically, glaring playfully over at Molly with a smile that looked like the Grinch’s smile. Lilly giggled softly at his expression, drawing Teigan’s attention back to her. “What?” Teigan asked, keeping the Grinch-like smile on his face. “What’s so funny?” Lilly hid her face in a pillow, laughing as she fell over on her side, her head landing on Teigan’s leg. “You okay?” Teigan questioned, setting his hand on Lilly’s thin shoulder.
“Yeah, I’m okay,” Lilly said as she stopped laughing at pulled the pillow away from her face. She glanced up at Teigan and started laughing again; she couldn’t get the image of him smiling like the Grinch out of her mind. Teigan smiled as she pulled the pillow back to her face.
“What’s wrong with her?” Josephine asked as she saw Lilly lying halfway in Teigan’s lap with a pillow held to her face. Teigan turned his head and looked over the top of the couch at his mother, the Grinch smile back on his face. Josephine chuckled softly. “Oh,” she said, smiling, “Maybe you should get the pillow away from her,” Josephine suggested. Teigan nodded and slowly started to pull the pillow away from Lilly’s face.
Lilly sat up, letting Teigan take the pillow away from her.
“Maybe we should get you something to eat before I take you home,” Teigan suggested, standing up before he reached down took Lilly’s hand and pulled her to her feet.
“Okay,” Lilly agreed, all the sudden feeling hungry. Teigan started toward the kitchen, his grip on Lilly’s hand loosening to let it go. His eyes widened a little as he realized Lilly’s fingers had closed around his hand. He let his fingers close back around Lilly’s small hand.
“So what do you want?” Teigan asked, opening a cabinet with his free hand to reveal several different foods. Lilly stared up at the different foods before turning her eyes on Teigan. “What?”
“You guys eat food?” Lilly questioned.
“Well, mom doesn’t, but Molly and I tend to sometimes…when we’re bored,” Teigan said. “So what do you want to eat?” Lilly scanned the foods in the cabinet.
“I don’t care,” Lilly answered.
“Okay,” He grabbed a box of cheerios out of the cabinet and started leading her back toward the family room. “You like cheerios right?” he asked, glancing over at her.
“Yeah,” Lilly answered.
They entered the family room to find Molly sitting on the couch watching Aladdin. Teigan and Lilly sat down on the couch beside Molly and started to eat the cheerios out of the box.
“I still don’t get it,” Molly stated, her eyes not leaving the television screen.
“What?” Lilly asked, reaching for the box of cheerios that Teigan was holding.
“I don’t get why Titanic is so sad,” Molly replied. Lilly sighed, trying to think of a good way to explain it.
“Molly, pretend that Leonardo DiCaprio is Aladdin, and Kate Winslet is Jasmine,” Lilly said, “Now pretend you are Jasmine. How would you feel if Aladdin froze to death in your arms?”
“It would be creepy,” Molly stated.
“Anything else?” Lilly asked hopefully. Molly shook her head. “Never mind, I don’t know how do describe it better.”
“Lilly, she’s right, it would be a little creepy,” Teigan put in. Lilly sighed in frustration. “But I do get what you mean,” he said before stuffing a handful of cheerios into his mouth.
Thirty minutes later, Lilly’s head was resting on Teigan’s shoulder, her eyes closed as she slept comfortably. She had fallen asleep soon after arguing with Molly. Teigan sat with his arm around Lilly’s shoulders. He was worried about Lilly, but he couldn’t bring himself to wake her up, so he spent the rest of the day watching movies with Molly, still holding Lilly in his arms. The whole time he was hoping Lilly would wake up, but dreading when he’d have to take her home.
