Chapter 7
Lilly woke up the following morning to hear soft snoring coming from above her head. Her chocolate colored eyes glanced up to find Teigan’s head resting against hers. A small smile formed on her lips as she noticed the dark brown strands of hair that fell in Teigan’s face.
Lilly lightly set her head against Teigan’s shoulder, her eyes closing in content.
“Teigan, Lilly!” Molly cried as she ran into the family room about an hour later, successfully waking both said people from their comfortable sleep.
“What?” Teigan grumbled, pulling Lilly closer to him as Molly jumped onto the couch, her sea blue eyes wide and frantic.
“Mama says we need to get Lilly out of here fast,” Molly explained, tugging on Teigan’s arm.
“Okay,” Teigan said, gently shifting Lilly so he could get up. He reached down his hand to help her up. Lilly set her small hand in Teigan’s much larger hand and let him pull her up and lead her toward his room where he quickly grabbed a backpack and threw some cloths into it before leading Lilly back out to the front door where they met Molly again.
“What’s going on?” Lilly asked, confused as she looked from Teigan to Molly.
“Molly will explain later,” Teigan assured as he pulled the front door open and stuck his head out into the hallway. After making sure the hall was clear, he gently pulled Lilly out into the hall, followed by Molly.
Molly and Lilly jogged to keep up with Teigan’s long stride as he led them toward the exit.
Five minutes later they stepped out onto a cold, damp and dark street. The sky was just starting to change to a dark pink-purple.
“Where are we…” Teigan cut Lilly off by pulling her against his chest and pressing his finger gently to her lips, causing Lilly’s breath to catch in her throat.
“You’ll see,” Teigan said softly before letting her go, a small smirk on his lips.
Teigan let go of Lilly’s hand and started to creep down toward the end of the street. Lilly watched as Molly followed close behind Teigan before following them.
Lilly followed them down several streets, paying no attention to her surroundings, just following Teigan and Molly’s figures, confident that Teigan would keep her safe.
Teigan turned down another alleyway, considerably darker then the first. Molly and Lilly came up beside him, Lilly wearing a confused expression on her face.
“Lilly, are you okay?” Teigan asked, his voice not showing that he was tired or that he had just been running for about ten minutes. He pulled the small, blond girl close to his side, watching her with concern.
“Yeah, just a little tired,” Lilly admitted, leaning against Teigan’s side for support, her voice breathy. Exhaustion was written all over Lilly’s features. Her arms hung limply at her side, her head resting against the side of Teigan’s shoulder.
“Hey, you’ll be okay,” Teigan promised, rubbing Lilly’s shoulder reassuringly. “It’s just a little further.” Lilly nodded he head slowly. “Okay,” Teigan began to lead her down the street, his arm still around her shoulders.
Occasionally Teigan would glance over his shoulder, like he was checking to make sure they weren’t being followed. Lilly noticed this and brought it up. “What are you looking for? Being followed?” She asked, her forehead wrinkling a little; do to worry, as she stared up at Teigan through large, scared brown eyes.
“Nothing,” Teigan assured, glancing over his shoulder again. “I’m just making sure.”
“Of what?” Lilly asked suspiciously as Teigan pulled a key out of his pocket and stuck it in the metal door they had come up to.
“You don’t miss a thing do you?” Teigan replied as he pulled the door open and ushered Molly and Lilly into a narrow staircase. Lilly was silent as Teigan came into the small space and locked the door again, causing him to think she had dropped it.
“So what were you making sure of?” Lilly asked, her eyes narrowing a little as she looked up at him, from where she stood, three steps below him.
“Look,” Teigan said, turning to face Lilly. She stared up at him, trying to see his face through the darkness. “There is a chance that some people from the… clan were following us, I was just checking to make sure they weren’t. But I can’t be sure,” Teigan explained. Teigan’s glowing, blue eyes turned downward.
“Clan?” Lilly questioned. Teigan glanced up at her before turning his gaze on the wall.
“I’ll try to explain later,” Teigan responded, “Right now we should probably get going.”
Lilly nodded her head in agreement. “Okay.”
The three started down the stairs, the soft tapping sounds, their shoes made on the cement stairs, echoing off the walls around them.
At the bottom of the stairs, Teigan pushed open another large door, revealing a small, bright room.
Lilly followed Molly into the room, Teigan close behind her.
The room was small and a little packed. In one corner, there was a small kitchen with a small oven, stove and sink. A mini fridge sat on the top of the counter, and a microwave was above the stove.
There was a loft about six feet from the floor in the opposite corner from the kitchen, a latter, leaned against the wall for easier access. Lilly guess the loft area was were everyone slept.
Only one door came off the packed room, and Lilly presumed that it led to a bathroom.
The rest of the room was pretty messy, looking a lot like someone had tried to fit a whole house-worth of furniture into the small space. Two brown couches sat in one of the remaining corners facing a twenty-inch flat screen TV. In the corner, below the loft, sat a old computer on a computer stand, a fold out chair in front of it.
The only thinks on the walls were a calendar and crucifix, hanging side-by-side next to the front door. Boxes sat around the room in the remaining wall space.
Molly skipped over to a box by the computer and pulled out a few of her toys. Lilly watched, unable to keep herself from laughing softly. She was amazed at how well Molly handled the situation. The little girl acted like she had been through this a lot before and it was just normal routine.
Lilly started toward the couch, feeling a wave of exhaustion come over her, needing to sit down.
“Lilly, are you okay?” Teigan asked, coming to her side, his eyes filled with worry.
“Yeah, I’m fine, just need to sit for awhile,” Lilly explained, tilting her head back to rest it on the back of the couch, exposing her pale neck.
Teigan stared at her white throat for several minutes, before shaking his head and turning his attention to Lilly’s face, noticing that her eyes had drifted closed again. Teigan carefully moved Lily so she was lying on the couch. He brushed the strands of blond hair way from Lilly’s face. A frown on his face as he noticed how much Lilly seemed to be sleeping.
