Who do you think I am?
Who do you think I am?
Do you think I am you?
I am not your reflection. I am me. That’s all I will ever be.
I won’t be who you want me to be, who you think I am, who you think I should be.
I grew up in a neighborhood that was only a step from the ghetto.
I grew up in a place with a run-down car wash down the road, a nice little grocery outlet around the opposing road, and a tiny elementary school following the junior high and high school down another road.
I grew up with best friends that I cherished until I had to move.
You think I am like you just because I wear what is an expensive coat.
Guess what?
I stole that coat.
You think I am like you just because I have a computer, an iPod, maybe even a laptop.
Guess what?
The computer was for free, the iPod was bought by my stepdad, and the laptop was stolen and sold to me for one hundred dollars.
You think you can look down on me just because I know how to do homework and you’re too busy smoking pot or getting drunk to actually graduate high school.
Whose fault is that? Yours or mine?
I am not like anyone else.
I am me.
I have my own unique soprano sound to my voice, my own way of moving that makes people look at me, my own way of doing things.
I won’t be like you.
Go ahead. Try and force your ways on me. It won’t work.
Because I am me.
And you, unfortunately, are you.
