we woke up hot in the sun without shirts
we asked Him for food, and He gave us dirt
and dividend spaces for neat vacant blocks
we build our new homes from plaster and rocks
walls to separate our ins from our outs
we build our new homes to fill with our doubts
now fears dim the corners like oil slicks
the holes in our bedroom walls we can’t fix
stare into us like empty socket eyes
we’re burned out like lightbulbs, blown out like tires
God’s rivers divide us; gold silver spoons
scholars and crosses, stars, green crescent moons
by winter’s end, we sleep deep in the arts
the rivers have frozen, still as our hearts
