Two Years Later…
Everyone sat at the dining room table and chatter and laughter echoed througout the room.
“Soph, hand me the mashed potatoes,” Hilary called from a couple seats down. Sophia reached over and grabbed the potatoes and handed them down while she continued to chat with Jason who was bubbling over his day at the park.
“And then, and then!” He sputtered. “And then Uncle Matt followed me down the slide!”
“He did?” Sophia asked, faking excitement for his sake. “But wait…isn’t he too big for the slide?”
“That’s what I said!” Jason exclaimed and Sophia laughed. Before she coud say anything else, she felt her red curls being yanked.
“Lorraine, no pulling mommie’s hair.” Sophia told her daughter as she turned to her. Lorraine’s cheeks were flushed with happiness and she giggled and pulled harder. Sophia sighed and reached down to remove the hand herself when Matt swooped in and scooped the one and half year old up.
“Hows my Lorry?” He asked her as he rubbed his nose against hers, making her giggle. She reached up and grabbed the sides of her face.
“Daddy. Juice?” She asked and Matt turned to look at Sophia.
“Where’s Lorry’s sipy cup?” He questioned.
“Should be in the kitchen,” Sophia responded and Matt handed her the little redhead before he grinned and bounced off to the kitchen. Lorraine looked up at Sophia and smiled, showing her four front teeth that she had developed so far. Sophia tweeked her nose and Lorraine grinned before she let her head fall to her mother’s shoulder.
“Mama, juice?” She asked as she burried her face in Sophia’s neck.
“Daddy’s getting it,” She promised before kissing her daughter’s cheek.
“Sophia honey, whens your next showing?” Sophia looked up at her step fathers voice and shrugged.
“It was supposed to be next week but its on the same day as my wedding annersary so I pushed the showing foreward a little bit.”
“Oh yeah, it’ll be a whole year, huh?” Paul Lankly spoke up and Sophia smiled and nodded.
“And to think, you wanted nothing to do with him at first.” David added as he played with Alison’s youngest son.
“And for good reason!” Juliet put in and David rolled his eyes.
“Whatever, in the end she couldn’t resist his charm,” David shot back and Julie snorted.
“You mean she couldn’t resist the se-“
“Julie!” I broke in sharply and she looked at me oddly for a moment before she burned pink and smiled sheepishly.
“Sorry,” she laughed lightly. Sophia rolled her eyes.
“Here you go, baby.” Sophia looked up and Lorraine reached out as Matt appeared with Lorraine’s sippy cup.
“Juice?” She asked.
“Juice,” Matt and Sophia responded together before Lorraine happily began to suck on the cup’s tip. Her bright blue eyes observed her parents as they smiled at her. She pulled the cup away. “All done,” she supplied. Matt shook the cup and felt that it was still more than half full, but before he could say anything, Lorraine had squirmed from her mother’s hands.
She slowly and wobbly walked over to where David was playing with Ryan, Alison’s two year old.
Then she pushed him away and gobbled up all of David’s attention for herself. Ryan glared at her and Sophia rolled her eyes and turned to Matt as they started to argue for David’s attention.
“You alright, Soph?” Matt asked and Sophia nodded.
“I’m fine, just a little tired,” She responded and Matt picked up her left hand and kissed it, letting his index finger run over the white-gold wedding band.
“You’ve been tired for a whlie now, sweets,” he informed her before he sat down in the seat next to her; Jason had run off to sit in his grandmother’s lap.
“Yeah, I know. It’s just…” It’s now or never, “promise you won’t freak?” She asked him and his smile made his beautiful blue eyes light up.
“Scouts honor.”
And because when Matt was about six years old, he actually was a scout, he felt like his saying ‘scouts honor’ actually meant something.
“I might…” and then she leant in and whispered the rest of the sentence into Matt’s ear. His jaw dropped slightly and his eyes widened before he pulled away.
“Well…I…are you sure? And serious?” He managed and Soph nodded.
“Two tests. Doctor appointement next week-”
“I’m…yes, Sophia!” He exclaimed, breaking into a grin. He stood up, pulled Sophia out of her chair, and pulled her to him in a heavy kiss.
“Awe dude, save it for the bedroom,” David groaned and Sophia laughed as Matt smiled and pulled away. By now everyone in the room was looking at the couple and Matt grinned at his wife.
“Can I tell them? Oh please, can we tell them?” he asked, excitedly; then, at Sophia’s nod he burst out with: “We’re going to have another baby!”
It was silent for about half a second before the room broke out into cheers and laughter.
“Oh man, another one?” David groaned. “You would knock her up again.”
“Shut up, David!” Julie hushed him before Matt had the chance. She grinned at Sophia, her best friend, and winked before turning her attention to berating David once more.
Matt turned to Sophia and pulled her by her hips as close to him as was possible.
“I love you, Sophia. I love you so much.” He whispered and she smiled shyly.
“You know I love you too, Matt.” She pulled him down for another kiss but before it could get to heated, Matt felt his pants moving. Curiously, he glanced down and stared at the rather tiny girl who was grasping his pants.
“Daddy, juice.” She told again but before Matt could groan and get her the juice, Alison swiped in. She grabbed Lorraine and kissed her cheek.
“Not now, sweetie. Come on, I’ll get you some juice.” She stood up with Lorraine in her arms and went to move away when she suddenly stopped and turned to look at Matt and Sophia. “Carry on,” She spoke with a light wave before hurrying off with their child.
Matt and Sophia watched her for a second before Matt shrugged and turned to face Sophia.
And then, he kissed her.
