there's a dearth of stars in the sky tonight
and girl you know the moon is fading.
they say, they say it's only light pollution but
we know better, we always do.
did anyone ever tell you, you light candles
with your eyes 'cause if no one ever did then hold me
hold me and tell me i'm the first.

the perseids were streaking the sky in the summer swelter
and we stood on your rooftop and said that
any minute one of them was going to break through
the atmosphere and come on down to earth --

bang --

but tomorrow came after all and now it's just a memory
a shard of the past imbedded in my mind indelibly.
there's venom lodged in my throat now and i can't even scream
with you not there beside me; rebellion isn't fun without you.
the soulless faces haunt me here at every turn
and i ask myself why you had to go and why you left
and girl i'll never know, you didn't stay long enough to
explain and i swear i never saw it coming, i swear.
