This Day

I did not know what to get you,
But I’ll try anyway.
For giving presents to your friends,
Is not the reason we celebrate this day.

Of the most beautiful gifts,
The jewelry and toys pull us apart.
The gifts we give may be special,
But the first was a gift of a heart.

I still searched every store,
To find a gift for you.
But it was then that I realized,
That only one would prove true.

What is this gift?
I would hear the skeptics speak.
They went to the mall to look,
But all the presents that they found were weak.

A rose can be pretty,
Smelling of love in the wind.
But it will eventually fall to dust,
A victim of earth’s sin.

A diamond is brilliant,
Supposedly a girl’s best friend.
But diamonds are not forever,
No matter how much money you spend.

So this day is not for giving,
But forgiving instead.
As the most beautiful gift of all,
Laid down his sweet head.
