Unbreakable

A jigsaw puzzle lies on the floor,
Its many pieces scattered abroad.
No pattern in their arrangement,
A chaos is sweeping the land.

One by one the puzzle pieces were taken apart,
Flung to corners of darkness.
But there was something about this puzzle,
It was unlike any seen before.

There was no picture on its face,
Just a palette of ashen gray.
No one knew where the pieces fit,
No one knew how to put it back.

But no one cared enough to notice,
That their damage could not be repaired.
The pieces could be collected,
But they would never fit again.

Some tried tape and others glue,
To put the empty picture back together again.
They discovered all too soon,
That you cannot mend countless parts.

The puzzle did not even know what it looked like,
How it felt to be unbroken.
But it feels unbreakable in the shadow of night,
For there is nothing left to shatter.
