A/N: Sonnet for poetry unit. Don’t like this as much as some of my other ones, but reasonably proud of it, and I’m looking for ways to improve: so, feedback, please! It doesn’t take that long.

On Our World

It’s only natural to feel vastly small
when staring skyward at the great expanse
of stars, or of the land, and at first glance
this vibrant planet will sustain us all.

It gave us life, it to our race gave birth.
This mother’s children have a grander plan;
we ravage it, we burn away the land
till all that’s left is scorched and bitter earth.

We watch aghast, we gasp a frightened plea
to gods unknown: reverse this world we’ve wrought.
We curse ourselves for ever having thought
that this, our planet, would eternal be.

We see, through ‘scuring plumes of steely smoke
that our world is broken.
