War

Remember the times when war was fun?

When we played without usin’ guns?

When we used to stay up all night long

Doin’ our dance and singing our song

Do you remember countless nights?

When war was our only fight?

We’d sit by the fire, or out on the porch

Just listenin’ to the crickets hum

Remember when kings and queens were just cards?

And we’d duel until one of us cheated

Lying in your cool summers dewy yard

Those nights were so hot and the games were so heated

Remember when war was just a game?

When losing didn’t take lives

When we could shrug off losses just the same

Be it a jack or a pair of fives

Now I know that war is more

Than laughs and a full deck

It beats some down and makes some sore

And sends some right to heck
