I HAVE ALMOST HIT ONE HUNDRED REVIEWS! Thank you guys so much. Honestly, I really appreciate it!
Any how, some of my readers are a little mixed up with Greek mythology so I'm gonna explain a bit.
In Greek Mythology, Aphrodite is the goddess of Love and Beauty, K? Well she also happens to have several lovers aside from her husband, Hephaestus. One of the Lovers was the Greek God Ares, who helped give her a few children, one being Eros, or otherwise known as Cupid in Roman Mythology. But in my story they are the same, alright? Just go along with me. Anteros, god of Requited love, punisher of scorned love, and avenger of unrequited love, is also one of the children Ares and Aphrodite conceived.
This is all mythology, fables and such so pretty much it's a soap opera. But hey, I love the greek Gods and such. And it helped me out quite a bit. So enjoy!
Link and Veronica stood at the top of the stares once more staring at the huge doors in front of them. Their curiosity was killing them, but as Jayda once heard and repeated, "Curiosity killed the cat, maybe. But satisfaction brought it back."
Link looked over at Veronica with a smirk wide on his face. She still stood with her fists on her hip and a concentrated look on her face.
"You know, I do happen to know a trick or two that may come in handy."
"Handy for what?" She mumbled, still watching the door as if she expected by sheer mind force would open in. 'May the force be with you.' He thought humorously.
"You know. This and that." He grinned. She rolled her eyes, again. "Your eyes are going to get stuck that way you know. But any way," He cut her off before she could respond. "I know how to pick locks."
"And why didn't you say this sooner?" She questioned, rising into hysterics. "We could have opened this way sooner."
"And get caught way sooner." He interrupted. This caused her to pause for thought. Her eyes lit up as if a light bulb appeared.
"The blizzard will keep Jayda or Brody from finding us while we are investigating the north hall. So we can't get caught!"
"Good job, Watson."
"Watson? No way, I want to be Sherlock Holmes. He was the leader." She argued to his sarcasm.
"The leader is the one with brains, love."
"Then it's obviously not you." She muttered. His mouth flew open in a mocking gape.
"How could you say such a thing? My heart, I feel it slowly dying from the arrow you have shot through it with your cruelty." He feigned a faint, falling back into the banister of the stairs.
"Drama queen." She muttered before pulling him up and toward the door. "Well, Mr. Drama Queen, begin working your magic fingers on the door."
"Drama queen? Ha!" He grumbled, pulling out a tool from his pocket.
Fifteen minutes of pacing back and forth, Veronica was starting to get frustrated. Muttering to herself and listening to Link mutter to himself, was becoming a highly boring task.
"There!" She turned furiously to see him opening the door slightly. It creaked. She followed behind him but bumped into him.
"You so are going to have to teach me how to pick locks." She mused, only to run into his backside. "Why did you stop…." She trailed off as her eyes took in the sights. The walls were of white stone, the architecture much like that of the Greeks. The floor and the ceiling were also made of white stone, her guess was white marble. Darker grey lines moved their way through the stone work, looking much like veins. Several paintings were scattered around the hall. Link moved walked down the hall trying the doors which were locked from the inside.
"There is no way we can get into these." He spoke softly, as if their voices would cause a great disruption within this hall. Veronica barely paid attention as she started glancing among the paintings. The one that caught her attention was of a beautiful blonde woman amidst a garden of roses. Men lying at her feet with the puppy eyed look in their eyes. What really made her stare at the picture was that she could have sworn she had seen this woman before. With Jayda once. She remembered that she had walked off as soon as she saw Veronica and when she asked Jayda about it, Jayda only said it was a friend of the family and never spoke of her again.
"Wow, that's one hot chick." Link's voice interrupted her thoughts but she didn't bother to comment back. She stared at the picture for another moment then turned around.
"Jayda is obsessed." Link commented, moving amongst the art on tables through the hall. She turned to look at him,
"She seems to hide a lot of secrets." She murmured, her voice almost in a trance as her eyes feasted upon the beauty within the vast hall.
"Ya think?" Veronica ignored him for another moment until she heard silence. Turning around, she found him staring at a painting. Coming up beside him, she let her mouth open wide in a gape.
"Is that Brody?"
"I was gonna ask you the same question." He muttered, his voice filled with surprise.
"Either Jayda painted these as a jest or I'm just going crazy." Veronica whispered, looking at the fine details of the painting. It looked like Brody, with golden hair, as he grinned at a group of women who seemed to fawn over him.
"Well we both know you are crazy…" He grinned, teasingly. Giving her an opportunity to smack him.
"Something freaky is going on here and I'm starting to wonder if she planned this." She commented, a pondering look amongst her features.
"What do you mean?" He asked, wondering where the short fry next to him mind was going.
"Well what is she put it here because she knew curiosity would get the best of us and planted all this for us to find. A joke, or something. And behind those doors are more jokes."
"But we can't get in them."
"Hmmm. Maybe she thought you could, if she knew about your ability to pick locks. Which by the way, I want a lesson in picking locks 101."
"Yes ma'am." Suddenly, he turned around to cover his mouth with a yawn. She watched as he walked to the corner of the hall and sat down.
"Link?" She asked, walking up to him. When she kneeled down next to him, "Link?" She heard him snoring. "Men."
"You aren't supposed to be in here, Veronica Nelson." Veronica whipped around as she stood up and turned to see the woman in the painting.
"Holy shiznit."
Veronica gaped at her as she stared over at her.
"Who are you?"
"You aren't supposed to be in here." The woman repeated, her soft blue eyes flashing angrily.
"Yes, yes, you said that already. Who are you?"
"I'm someone. How did you get in here, Veronica?" She questioned.
"He picked the locks." Veronica's eyes trailed to the photograph as she compared the looks between the two. But her eyes caught on to the little plaque below it. Aphrodite. Goddess of Love.
Aphrodite watched her eyes come to the plaque and saw the recognition and disbelief rise into her eyes.
"Now you know who I am."
"But why are you here?"
"Because you have entered my home by, breaking and entering is it?, and I don't take kindly to intruders." Aphrodite's voice was becoming darker and darker with every word.
'For a Love goddess, she's quite sinister.' Veronica thought as she turned around to look at the beauty in front of her. A thought suddenly occurred to her,
"Did you make Link fall asleep?"
Aphrodite sighed, giving off the impression she was slightly irate with Veronica.
"Of course. Or else things would get messy and I'd rather not have to clean up the mess."
"What are you talking about?"
"Mortals these days know nothing anymore. Absolutely nothing." The goddess muttered to herself. "Listen mortal because I will not repeat to myself. When a mortal man feasts his eyes upon myself they soon start falling for me. IT's because I am a Love goddess, of course."
"Of course." Before the goddess could say more, Veronica saw Brody pop into the room.
"Brody? What-?"
"Mother, what the hell do you think you are doing?" Brody questioned his mother, Aphrodite.
"Don't you question me like that Eros. I will have your head." Aphrodite muttered, hands crossed over her arms slightly annoyed with her son.
"Eros?" Veronica's eyes were wide and her mouth was hanging open.
"You can't have my head because then my father will be furious and he will happen to try for your head and you know that would really suck because of the whole balance of the world thing." Eros replied, nonchalantly. He crossed his arms, mimicking his mother. Which caused her to glare ferociously at Eros.
"I really hate you."
"I thought Love goddesses couldn't hate, mother dearest." Eros responded. Veronica watched the heat flaring through the two as they argued. "Now what are you doing?"
"These mortals broke into my hall. So I came to counter them."
"You aren't supposed to reveal yourself to mortal eyes."
"You're really one to talk, son."
"That wasn't my fault…" He trailed off.
"Not your fault? You let her know you were a god!"
"Like I said, not my fault… If you could control Anteros just a little better, I wouldn't have been harmed and Jayda wouldn't have had to help my sorry butt and then she wouldn't have discovered me!"
"BRODY!" Veronica shouted, interrupting them after getting tired of the arguing.
"What?" Eros and Aphrodite snapped at her, their movements much like the others.
"What the hell is going on?"
"Well mother, are you going to tell her or shall I?" Veronica noticed the taunting tone Brody, or rather Eros, seemed to use with Aphrodite.
"You can but keep it short, we have to leave." She grumbled, turning her back and looking at the painting of herself.
"Jayda asked a favor of Aphrodite, saving you from the punishment of Anteros."
"Who is Anteros?"
"My son, the god of requited love, punisher of scorned love, and avenger of unrequited love."
"But why is he after me?"
"You scorned love for so long, Veronica." Eros commented softly. She stared up at him, sadness locked in their depths at his words.
"It's not like I meant for him to attack me."
"I know." He noticed the look Aphrodite was giving him. "Well, Veronica we must leave. We have… things to attend to."
"Mortal, you must not utter a word to your lover. This is already too much to process for you, let alone a mere man."
"You wound my sex mother."
"Oh shut up." And in a blink of an eye, they were gone. Veronica felt a headache forming and decided to go to wake Link.
Walking over to the corner he lay at, she kneeled in front of him, poking him in the ribs.
"Link? Link!" His eyes fluttered open and a small smile graced her face as his face contorted with confusion.
"What the heck am I doing here?" He asked, eye brows furrowed.
"You fell asleep on me. You must be really tired. What are you doing at night?" She teased. His face suddenly blanked, causing her to become suspicious.
"Nothing." He quickly stood up, grabbing her and putting her over his shoulder.
"Gah! Link put me down now or I'll-"
"Or you'll what? Beat me to death? Not gonna work, you are too small for that." He was heading out the hall, shutting the doors behind him. Going down the stairs, jarring her, he couldn't help but laugh at the 'oomph' sounds escaping her.
"Why must you act like a cave man?" She grunted out between her "oomph's".
"Me man. You woman. Me boss. You… you."
"Wow. Good job, Landon." She ragged.
"Come on, princess."
