"Empty Promise"

empty promise
sliding into demise
no room for obstruction
no talk of compromise
a letter on the table
inked in solidly black liquid
catching onto wordplay
not knowing what to say
and me
not being quite as stupid

middle of the lonely night
keeping company with ghosts
keeping company with
unfamiliar sounds in the hall
your photos on the wall
but still missing you the most

close to midnight
daylight sneaking up
i'm sure you are somewhere
as usual
steaming off at the mouth
telling christians to get bent
to return the preachers they've sent
and herd the mexicans
back to the rugged south

middle of the naked highway
keeping feelings in check
keeping myself from swerving
into a tree or
into a lamp post
your words incessantly
repeating in my head through it all
but still i'm missing you the most
