The Sorceress

Prologue...

In every story there usually is a happy ending. Romance, adventure, defeat, but not all “stories” have that happy ending. Not all princesses are saved from their tower; awaken by the kiss from their true love. Not all of us end up riding away in a horse drawn carriage, waving away to the town’s people, and the peasants. People princesses would even know, or care about. We don’t all end up a kind hearted person, who had just sentenced the evil doers to the dungeon. Nope, I have probably summed up most stories you’ve read, but I’ll make that simpler; we don’t all end like Cinderella, or Snow White.

Rather...

We princesses end up like me.

XxX Chapter OneXxX

My hair was slick and stuck to my face as I faced the danger known as Violet Mesmar, my mother.

She paced in front of me, her eyes stuck to the floor, glaring thoughtfully at it as if it was giving her lecturing tips. Surely she had run out of them, I had been in so much trouble that week it made mass murders look like good people (though I hadn’t committed any huge crimes of my own, thank you). She paused and I thought she was finally going to speak but she just continued to pace. I knew exactly what she was going to say but I didn’t want to dig myself in deeper so I kept it quiet.

This is what happened: I was caught with my two best friends Mia and Shannon being extremely “obnoxious” in a really famous store, the clerk didn’t care who I was so he threw me out. And just like that everyone in this huge city knew I was busted on TVs everywhere. “Is this the ruler we want? Someone who can’t even control their ability of speech?” (Blah, blah, blah!) Yep, that’s what I’ve heard all today. My mother wouldn’t let me move from the spot I was in. I was just to sit and dry slowly facing all the possible punishments I could go through.

A crack of thunder and the bright glow of lightning made her head snap up. Her curly brown hair bounced with the sudden motion, and her brown eyes were frightened. She never liked rain storms and as much as I wanted to be nice and comforting I really didn’t want to be on her bad side anymore then I already was.

She sucked in a deep breath, “I need wine…” she turned away and then stopped, her silk robe sent into disarray when she turned around, “Kali, darling, apparently my punishments don’t work so I’ve come up with one new one. Listen to me, clearly. Don’t let this happen again or there will be no ball. You will not take throne. Understand?” I sucked in a breath of air and answered the only thing that came to mind, “Yes, mother.” She waved her had in dismissal and strode to the kitchen to fetch her only love. I sat for a moment staring at the wooden floor with a shinning finish that didn’t seem as charming as it did when then workmen finally left.

I stood, a shiver running through my body, one thing processed: I needed to get out of these clothes. I walked tiredly to my room and threw open my closet. Grabbing the first things I could find, a soft shirt, which was a light blue and a pair of shorts, tying a long cover over myself, just so I didn’t get yelled at for being too “revealing”. I checked myself in the mirror, staring into my violet eyes watching them flash to a deep, dark blue then back again. I shook my hair to try and dry it but it wound up as a tangle upon my face.

I racked my fingers through my hair trying to undo what I had just done, but I just reached for a brush, rather. It slipped through my hair doing I couldn’t have done without it. I watched my reflection as if she were to say, “Here I am, the person you pretend to be.” I dropped the comb holding back the urge to punch my mirrored self. I strode and fell to my bed, looking at the ceiling waiting for the day to pass.

When I opened my eyes I noticed that I had dozed of and it was morning, I turned to see my clock read five o’ clock in the morning. I sat up hearing the slightest noise coming from the hall. Being my curious self I rolled out of bed and tipped-toed to the door pressing my ear to it, listening intently for any noise. There was a hushed murmuring but I couldn’t make out any words. I let my hand trace the wooden door to where the cool metal doorknob touched my hand; I gripped it, not a nervous cell running through my body. Okay maybe one, but what was going to be in my house? I allowed my fingers to slowly turn it to the right hearing a little click I knew that it was open; it slid open without the slightest creak. So much for secret agent.

I looked around the hallway and then heard the sound of someone coming down it, I closed the door enough so that no one could see me but I could see anyone else.

“Meow.” My heart leaped at the purr and when I looked down I saw Tippi. His large green eyes stared up at me (giving me the annoying sensation to try and make him blink, he was probably thinking, you silly girl. Blinking your eyes so often. What a great friend.)

“Meow,” he said again more urgently, waiting for his entrance to my room to open. I pushed the door open and watched him pad inside. His large white paws making the ancient floor boards creak under his heavy body. He jumped onto my bed, his lean orange body falling unto onto it. I took the first movement to close my door but I heard and saw someone coming down the hallway talking in a hushed voice in a phone. I closed my door silently and pressed the side of my face against the cool wood.

“Yes, I know, not yet. No! Not until the—it is granted. I have to wait until the…the day, look I have to go,” there was a slight pause, “No, I give the orders. You follow them. Understand?” Understand? Understand? The word rang through my head and a sudden flash back hit me hard.

Kali, darling, apparently my punishments don’t work so I’ve come up with one new one. Listen to me, clearly. Don’t let this happen again or there will be no ball. You will not take throne. Understand?” The same, harsh, cold tone. The iciness put into it. That was my mother.
