Election 2008

The candidates are crude,
coniving, crass.
I hear the country cranking,
crunching, clattering,
trying to push onward—
like an old machine
that hasn’t been oiled in ages.
Democracy is contorting,
convoluting, convulsing,
into something it was never meant to be.
A cascade of untruthful malarkey
flows conspiculously out of their mouths.
I can’t vote for a single one of you.

If only the schism would close with a clap,
then everyone could believe again.
