Blood Scented Memories

By: youkai no kira

As the small bird beats its wings

A feather falls gently to the ground

The wind takes it

As it gently brushes against my cheek

The wind picks it up once more

Lifting it into the summer breeze

The dandelions in front of me

Sway in time to the wind

Horses are heard in a distance

Coming towards the village at a fast pace

Samurai with double edged swords

Slice the throats of anyone they see

The shining metal swoops low to the ground

Cutting the dandelions’ heads off

Just as they did a moment ago

Blood stains the ground

As many screams fill the air

Samurai laugh at the suffering of others

Fire is set ablaze to the village

I watch this play over and over in my mind

Hiding in the depth of the forest

Blending in with the darkness of night

The laughing samurai rise in volume

But becomes deadly quiet

I see him coming

The leader of the samurai who destroyed everything

A tall man on horse back

Midnight blue hair with soulless black eyes

He looks around him as intently as I stare at him

He boasts in laughter as I continue to watch

I gasped in fright as I realize

Who he really is

I want to deny it

But my mind wont let me

I want to scream out

To let him know that I’m still alive

But my voice makes no noise

It’s my fault

All my fault

If I hadn’t ran away from home

None of this bloodshed would have happened

I cry silently in the night

Letting the wind carry my tears

Along with my heart

The scent of blood

Fills my nose

As the wind whips around me

I dry my tears and put on the bravest face

I run in front of the samurai’s leader

My brother

I call out to him by his first name

He growls in anger

Instinctively drawing his sword

The moon's light reflects off the blade

Blinding me

I close my eyes

As the blade swings over head

Barely missing its mark

I say good bye to my brother silently

As I hear the blade coming towards me

I felt no pain

But I did fall into eternal darknes…
