The New

Daylight breaks on the unfamiliar

The unknown shapes of twisted trees

A wide, clear sky

And an overpowering silence

The topography of looming hills

mirrors the contours of my soul

dark, uncharted

A new place, a new name

But still the ancient tightness in my chest

A fear as old as these black woods

Pursuing me always

Seeking solace in old sensations

an atonement

with poetry

and razor blades.

Taking refuge from uncertainty

in scarlet culverts

And rural idylls

A welcome return to anonymity

Eyes down, heart covered

Hiding the trembling

Cowardice or self-protection?

Here, I am unknown

fading into the shadows

amongst ancient trees

camouflaged

Sheltering in this transient shadow

I am calm

No more failings snapping at my heels

For one, perfect, clear moment,

a respite.
