Chapter ONE

The pink petals of the cherry blossom tree, fluttered around in the breeze, as they fell silently of the tree. The clear blue water of the frog pond, rippled in the breeze. The pearl clouds, delicate silhouette marked in the sapphire blue darkening sky.

I was mesmerized by all this beauty in my garden. It would soon be summer and the tadpoles would start to turn into froglets. I lost all thoughts of the outside world and fell into a trance (as I did everyday), of the beauty of my garden… Only to be interrupted by a voice calling my name. I recognized it as my mothers.

“Sakura, come and get ready?”

“Hai!”

I’d forgotten dad had some visitors from his work today. I have no idea, whatsoever about what to wear. I’ll just have to make do with my ruby dress.

I quickly put it on, with my ruby necklace and earrings and my black boots with red flowers on them. I brushed my hair down and out my red, sparkly headband on and made my way downstairs.

“Sakura, these are our guests, say hello.” My mother told me in Japanese.

“Konban Wa, Ogenki desu ka?” I said bowing slightly. I was surprised to see them all turn and stare at me confused, all of dad’s work members, spoke Japanese.

“Oh, Sakura, they speak English, try to say sorry, good evening.” She said again in Japanese.

“Hai, um, gomen.”

“Sakura!” My mum hissed.

“I don’t speak English.” I answered in Japanese.

Alright, then, lets eat I think the foods ready now.” My dad broke in, in his Japanese accent speaking English, to break all the tension.

At that moment I noticed the English couple sitting down, had a son, he looked quite handsome and had dark black hair. His eyes were a dark blue. They stood out well against his pale skin.

He saw me staring at him and I looked away, as we walked into the dining room.

We sat opposite each other. Dad talked with the man about work stuff. Mum talked to the women about fashion things, me and the boy just stared at the table, without uttering a word.

The dinner came, it was ramen, and I picked up my chop sticks to start eating, when mum stopped me, and gave me a knife and fork.

I’d barely used these. I ignored them and used my chopsticks. Mum gave me a hard, evil stare. I’d had enough of all this new, English behavior; this is Japan, for Gods sake! I got up from the table and went out into the garden.

I walked over to the pond and crouched down. I dipped my hand into the cool water and let the tadpoles gather around it. “Konnichi Wa!” I said smiling to the tadpoles. I had thought I was alone but, I guess I wasn’t. I heard movement behind me, I turned around to find the boy staring down at me, looking half shocked and half worried.

“Hi, whats your name?”

“Sakura.”

“So you do, understand English?”

“Of course!”

“So why didn’t you talk before. In English.., I mean.”

“I’m Nihongo not Eigo.” I said as I turned around.

“Ok… would you like to be friends?”

I felt a surge of relief, joy and happiness, rush over me. I quickly turned around with a huge smile on my face, my black hair twisting in the wind, and dark blue eyes sparkling. “Hai!”

“I’m guessing that means yes. By the way, I ‘m Sam.”

“Hai!”
