Sunflowers

There they stand,

Row upon row,

Like mourners,

Like sufferers,

Like those who have fallen,

Fallen from grace.

There they stand,

Row upon row,

Like wounded,

Like shadows,

Like creatures betrayed,

By betrayal so deep.

There they stand,

Row upon row,

Like lovers now gone,

Like hope that has died,

Like one time believers,

Believers no more.

There they stand,

Row upon row,

Faces turned from the sun,

Whose light they once sought.

Faces turned from the light,

Which once gave them life.
