Half Empty Smile

Chapter One- Last Glance

At first, I didn’t even see the car. I was just lost in his amazing eyes. The screech of the tires was just noise to me. I hardly noticed it until I felt the blinding headlights in my eyes.

Then I heard his voice, his beautiful, amazing voice. Even though it was alarmed and scared, I still loved it. “Lily!” He screamed.

My eyes were jerked from his. I looked directly into the light, not even knowing what it was for a split second. But when I felt his hands try to jerk me out of the way, I knew what was coming.

In a moment, the black car, caring the drunken driver, would hit us. Matt would fail at moving me out of the way. We would both get hurt. Death flashed across my mind.

I felt Matt’s arms yank me into him. His arms wrapped around me, and his back swerved to face the car. He must have known it was too late to move.

I closed my eyes.

And waited, listening to the sound of his racing heart beat beneath my ear.

The car hit us at full speed. I herd a chilling grunt rip out of Matt’s chest when it slammed into his back. We flew backwards, over the hood. I wasn’t even able to scream. We fell on to the asphalt a few yards behind the car. I could fell my ribs splinter beneath my skin. My leg felt like it was on fire and I could feel the pull of my skin as the bone broke through. It hurt to breathe. The night turned to blurry pastels.

It was then I noticed Matt’s arms weren’t wrapped around me. I tried to look up, but all I saw were the glaring headlights of other cars, making my head pound. People were suddenly every where on the sidewalk, surrounding us. What I heard was like a distant echo, people talking in urgent voices, the soft bleeping of buttons on a cell phone.

I saw a figure a few feet away on the ground. Matt lay there, still as a stone. His dirty blond hair fell over his perfect face. I narrowed my eyes, something was pooling around his body. A thick red liquid streamed towards me. When I realized what it was I tried to scream, but no sound came forth.

I could hardly manage to do it, but I reached over and put my hand on his, curling my fingers around it. I would fight the unconsciousness as long as I needed to. I needed to know that Matt would be okay. He had to be okay.

As the darkness overcame my eyes, I began to hear the loud scream of sirens. I saw the blur of an ambulance as it raced around the corner were Matt lay. But I didn’t care. I striving just to keep my eyes open, watching his disfigured body.

No! I thought. MATT!

I tried to talk, but all that came out of my mouth were small sobbing-sounds. I couldn’t hold my head up any longer, and it hit the asphalt. The world began to fade away, pulling me into the darkness.

Please don’t let me lose him. I thought, unable to find my lips to speak the words aloud.

The blackness finally took me, and I couldn’t fight it anymore.

Lily!” Matt called to me. I turned to face him in the hallway. He was running up to me, with a huge grin across his beautiful face.

Hey Matt.” I blushed. “What’s up?”

“Well,” He started, and began to walk forward, I fell into step beside him. “You know, junior prom is coming up……. And I don’t have a date.”

“Oh,” I said. I could feel my cheeks burning.

“So I was wondering……..” He began to rub his neck. “If you wanted to……um……”

“Go to prom with you?” I asked, my voice was so soft I thought he might not have heard me. But he did. Now he was the on blushing. “Yeah.” He smiled crookedly. “That.”

“I would love to, Matt.” I smiled.

He stopped walking. I stopped too, hopping he wouldn’t change his mind. “What?” I asked.

“Nothing.” His eyes lit up. “Thank you.”

He landed over and put his lips to my forehead. I felt my heart race inside my chest. I bit my lip down.

He pulled away, grinning. “I’ll call you tonight.” He said. “I have to go back to class.”

“Me too.”

“Bye!” He called, and started running in the opposite direction I was headed in.

"Bye."
