Contrast

A Villanelle

Perhaps in this chaos there shines a light,

A lantern long shielded from the dark;

The purpose so radiant, a purpose for which to fight.

It started with the encompassing victory of might,

But to counter remained the cosmos out of the arc;

Perhaps in this chaos there shines a light,

And thus since there are those who have forgotten right,

But there are the others who for it make their mark;

The purpose so radiant, a purpose for which to fight.

The human spirit soars above us, a lost kite,

But all that goes up must come down—good cannot forever disembark;

Perhaps in this chaos there shines a light,

Now we find ourselves engaged in this eternal plight,

But while ever we wage the battle of the human spark;

The purpose so radiant, a purpose for which to fight.

Yet it sometimes seems that death shall never find Brother Night,

But we have before cried Tyrant! and thrown off that despot-monarch;

Perhaps in this chaos there shines a light,

The purpose so radiant, a purpose for which to fight.
