Two months ago...

Screeeeech! The alarm clock rang a loud, annoying sound. I turned in my bed not wanting to wake up. Then, I heard a knock on my door.

“Get Up, Alex,” my sister screamed. “Mom said get up,” she said again.

She continuously knocked on the door. I threw a pillow at the door so she could stop. I got up and looked through my closet. I saw nothing there but shirts and jeans. I chose a shirt and a pair of jeans. Grrrreat! I thought to myself, the first day of school and I have nothing to wear. I took the shirt and jeans out of the closet and threw it on the bed.

I went into the bathroom to brush my teeth. After I brushed my teeth, I pulled my hair into a ponytail. I put my shirt and jeans on quickly and looked in the mirror one last time.

“I look great,” I said to myself.

I went downstairs to find breakfast already cooked. I took a piece of toast and headed out the door.

“Alex!” my mom yelled.

“Yes,” I hollered back

“Aren’t you goin’ to eat”

“No, I just wanna go to school and get this over with,” I yelled.

“Oh, are you still goin’ for the sports team after school?”

I rolled my eyes and turned back around. “Yes mother,” I said “Can I go now?”

“Yes, you may”

I laughed and he headed toward the door. I got my skateboard from the garage and skated down the sidewalk.

I didn’t even want to move here I thought to myself. I was fine in Rhode Island. I was fine in all the other states as well. But, we still had to move.

Now, we lived in a big state called California. It wasn’t all that bad, but I still want to go back to my old place, were my friends are. I decided to go to the park to relax before school started. I sat under the tree and pulled out my lyric’s book. This is the book I like to write songs and stories in. It helps me get my feelings out about things. I sang aloud hoping that no one would here me.

“It’s just time to get over it. It’s just time to move on,” I sang as good as I could. I hardly let anyone read this book. I glanced at my watch and saw that it was 8:30 a.m. and I only had 10 mins. to get to school.

On the first day of school, I’m going to be late. What a wonderful impression they are going to get about me.

I ran out of the park and down the street to find the school right there in front of me. I stood there in front of the school.

Westerfield high here I come.

I walked into the building and went into the bathroom. I looked in the mirror and saw my average face, at least that’s what I called it. I had long brown and black hair that stops past my shoulders. I was about 5 ft 5 in. I pulled my hair back into a ponytail.

“Wow, what a loser,” I heard someone say.

I turned around and saw three girls standing behind me. The girl who looked like the leader of the clique had two girls standing behind her.

“Whatever, dude,” I whispered.

I walked out of the bathroom with my eyes closed. I stood outside the door for about a second or two to calm down.

I walked down the hall, to the office, to get my schedule. I saw people staring at me like they were a pack of wolves and I was a piece of meat.

I stepped into the office and got my schedule. I went to my first class and saw the three girls again. Great, I thought. Already trouble on the first day of school.

I sat in the back of the classroom, so I wouldn’t get called on.

“Hi, everyone! Sorry, I’m late,” a man said, who was walking in the door. He had a briefcase in his hand with papers sticking out o it.

“Oh we have a new student, I see,” he said.

“Why don’t you come on up and introduce yourself?”

I walked slowly in front of my classmates.

“Well, uh my name is Alexis, but I prefer if you call me Alex,” I said softly. “And. uhmm I just moved here,”

“Okay, well my name is Edward but I prefer if you all me Mr. Davis,” he said politely. “So, Alex what do you like to do for fun?” Mr. Davis questioned.

“Uh, well I like to play sports, particularly basketball,” I said softly.

“Wonderful,” the girl I encountered with earlier commented. “We’ll have another boy in our class,” she said with a fake smile on her face. I heard the other kids snicker.

“That’s enough of that!” Mr. Davis screamed. “You may sit down now Alex.”

He talked the rest of the class period. But I didn’t really listen to him. I just sort of stared out the windows and picked at my fingernails.

After class, I found out that the girl who obviously doesn’t like me is the most popular girl in school.

Her name was Jennifer. She has long blonde hair and is about 5ft 7. She looks like she gets everything she wants and I’m sure she does. She also wears preppy clothes.

Her two bestest friends in the world are Sandy and Brittani. Sandy has brunette hair that stops a little above her shoulders. She is around 5 ft 7 and 5 ft 8. Brittani has sandy blonde hair that stops past her shoulders. She is about 5 ft 9.

By the end of the day, I was worn out. I didn’t even feel like going to basketball practice. But I felt that I needed a after school program to stay out of the house. I was already running late, so I quickly down the hall trying to stuff the papers in my bookbag.

As I was running down the hall, I ran into someone, knocking out all the stuff in my bookbag and his as well.

“Ughhh..great!” I said while getting down on my knees trying to get all of the papers up. “I am so sorry. I was trying to get to basketball practice and I was running late and I--,”“Don’t worry about it,” he interrupted. Then his eyes widened. “You play sports?” he asked.

“Uhm, yeah. So what?” I said.

“It’s just that girls never really been on the basketball team, that’s all,”

“Oh really. Well that’s about to change. Well, I would love to chat more,” I said sarcastically, “But I have to get to practice,”

“Me, Too,” he said standing up. I stood up as well seeing that he was about 6 ft 1.

“Okay, well see you there,” I said while running off.

I ran as fast as I could to get there.

I burst into the gym falling into this guy with blonde hair. “Umm, thanks,” I said laughing.

“No problem,” he said and just like that he walked off.

I went up to the coach and asked, “Can I tryout for the basketball team?”

“Sure, are you good?”

“Yup,” I said gleefully.

“Yea, that’s what they all say,” he muttered.

“Okay everyone,” he said while clapping his hands. “Let’s do some drills,”

Everybody ran down the court and back. We did this about 5 more times. After that we played a game of basketball. At the end of tryouts, Coach announced all the people who made the team this year. I listened to him very carefully for my name. After I thought I didn’t make the team, I heard him say,” And without further a do, I announce our first female on the basketball team,”

I smiled. All the boys looked at me with their eyes as big as a hawk. I headed out the gym thinking I could run or skate home, but boy was I wrong. Outside it was raining cat and dogs. One of the boys asked if I needed a ride home. I said yes and took the offer gratefully. When I finally got home, I saw that my mom wasn’t home yet, which I wasn’t that surprised about.

“Alex! Alex!” I heard my brothers and sisters yell.

“Leave me alone!” I screamed.

“What about--?”

“Fix a sandwich,” I interrupted while slamming the door.

I sat on my bed while looking through my bookbag. I tried to find my lyrics book, but I couldn’t. I took everything out of there but I still couldn’t find it. Aghh I thought to myself. I had it here when I went to school. I had it after class. Then suddenly, I thought of when I bumped into that guy after school. Awwww man! Now some stranger, that I don’t even know has all of my thoughts right in his hands. I put my things inside my bookbag and saw that I have something of his too……..

Five days later, I saw that guy I bumped into after school at his locker.

“Hey,” I said.

“Hi,” he said while pushing things into his locker.

“I think you have something of mine,”

“Oh yeah,” he said and reached into his bookbag and pulled out my lyrics book.

I reached out to snatch it but he pulled it away.

“I think you have something of mine too,” he said with a smile.

We exchanged items and I said, “So I’ll see you around?”

“Definitely,” he said and with that he walked away.

I rand down the hall to my class and thought, maybe this wont be a bad year after all.
