Love.
A deep, tender, indescribable feeling of affection towards a person, at least that’s what the dictionary says. Me? Well I disagree. If you asked 100 people what they thought love was you would most likely get 100 different answers. Whether it be love towards a person, a pet or simply an inanimate object. Love is a feeling thrown open to interpretation.
But I'm not here to ask you what you think love is. I'm going to tell what I think love is and what love makes you do. I think I’ve been in love. I think I'm in love but nobody can really know. But to me, love isn’t sleeping around, selling your virginity or giggling from afar. Love is laying side by side, having someone stroke your hair without wondering “does my bum look big in this,”
Love is being comfortable in your own skin because you know that there are thousands of other people that your loved one could be with and yet they choose you. Love is trusting someone completely and knowing that if you have a problem you have someone you could turn to without wondering if they’re going to laugh at you. Love is passed between those whispered words that make you bristle with jealousy. The same words that are making somebody else glow with pleasure and feel like crying because their heart is swelling with joy.
Being in love doesn’t make you feel like you have nobody around; it makes you suddenly see things clearly. The days seem too short and when the tension and stress of a high school day get too much you have somebody to hug and talk to and you know that in the moment you see them, your feeling will melt away and you’ll have to stop to remember the problem.
Have you ever seen those couples, the “golden” couples that you’re jealous of, the ones that you would give anything to break up, just so you don’t have to face the pit of loneliness that grows inside you when you see them, but it’s that same pit of loneliness that bubbles with excitement when you start to fall in love?
Love can make you act in silly, goofy and sometimes downright stupid way. But most of the time, you’re sweet and romantic. A silly smile that to your friends, looks over exaggerated, but to you, impossible to remove. You wont know when love hits you or why, all you know is that it will. You might not be ready, you might not want it, but it will happen and you’ll come to enjoy it.
Love doesn’t have to be walks on the beach in sunset, picnics in a deserted park in summer or laughing in the rain and snow. It can be curling up watching a film, laughing as you cook a disgusting meal together, or sitting in a crowded room and catching somebody’s gaze and thinking “they’re all mine” and knowing that only you can cause the smile that is glued to their lips. That is your smile, and nobody else’s.
And after a while you’ll realize one of two things, one that you are definitely in “love” whatever that is you and this is your soul mate, or that maybe you aren’t perfectly suited and you should move on. That’s the thing with love, it has the power to make or break your heart.
