Hey Guys. Umm… sorry it’s been so long since my last update. But with finals coming up and the concussion I got last week, it’s been kinda hard to find time and focus to write. But I finally got to it!! It may be a little short but I didn’t want to post the whole chapter. So…yeah. Please leave a review!!
Matty stared open mouthed at the object hovering above her. For nearly a full minute she gaped at it until her tired and confused brain was able to accept what was happening. Her ipod was floating!
Slowly, she blinked her eyes. When the ipod did not vanish she shut her eyes again, keeping them closed longer and harder then before. For a second, she almost believed she had fallen asleep under the water, or that she had somehow drowned and was experiencing that wonderful dream state between life and death she had been told about. By when she cracked one eye open and the ipod remained stubbornly airborne, she acknowledged the truth that she was not hallucinating with a loud, earsplitting scream.
The ipod splashed through the surface of the water and clattered loudly to the bottom of the bath tub, but Matty was already out with a towel wrapped around her. She threw herself against the door, wanting to get as far away from the bath as possible, and it burst open, causing her to stumble and nearly fall.
Matty stood in the hall, hair dripping and water running off her legs. She was afraid to look back at the ipod, for reasons she didn’t even know. Thundering foot steps could be heard as Chad came running up the stairs, looking around. “What! What is it?”
She couldn’t form words but instead pointed at the bath. The water was just
settling and the black ipod could easily be seen from where they were standing. Chad followed her finger and then curse. “Damn it Matty, I thought it was something big. Did you scream cause you ipod got wet?” He said with obvious annoyance in his voice.
Finally, Matty found her voice, but had trouble stringing the words together. “No, - it - fell.” She said between gasps.
“Because you dropped it.”
“No! – it dropped. – It – Chad, it was floating!”
For a moment they just stared at each other, confusion and fear in both their eyes. Matty, of course, was scared and confounded at the thought of levitating objects while Chad was only concerned for his sister. Something had happened to her and now she was talking about flying MP3 players. He put his hands on her shoulders and looked her square in the eye. “Mat, are you okay.” He said in a thoroughly uneasy voice.
Matty shrugged off his hands and stared at him in disbelief. “You think I’m crazy, don’t you? I may be—a little crazy at time,” She admitted. “but I’m telling you, this was real! I wasn’t imagining it!”
“Look, Matty, ipods don’t float. They don’t fly. And they don’t drop out of thin air. I’m worried something’s wrong. Maybe we should bring it up with mom and dad when they get home.”
At this Matty stopped trying to argue. He father was a major realist, and if he thought his daughter was hallucinating it would be straight to the doctor and psychiatric meds. So she put on a half smile instead and said softly, “Come on Chad, can’t you take a joke? Don’t get all serious on me.”
And with that she turned away, holding her throbbing right shoulder, and closed the door quietly behind her. Chad continued to stare at the polished oak for a while, pondering his sister’s abrupt change in attitude, before deciding to return to his wrestling match.
Matty waited until she heard Chad’s footsteps disappear down the stairs. She reached a tentative hand into the water, which was still hot, and grabbed the ipod with her thumb and forefinger. As soon as it was clear of the water she placed it quickly on a towel, not wanting to touch it more then she needed to. Besides being wet, the ipod looked fine. Carefully, she pressed and held the play button down. She sat there for nearly a minute while nothing happened. Finally, she accepted that the flying ipod was dead.
Still, even though she was afraid to touch it too long and though she knew it was dead, she didn’t throw it away. She just couldn’t bring herself to do it. Instead she wrapped it gently in the towel and carried it to her room. She laid it down on her bedside table and stared at it, wondering if it could float when it’s broken, before turning away.
With a sigh she noticed her unfinished—un started—essay sitting on the desk. She sat down and grabbed a pen, trying to remember what Justinian had done for his Empire. Drawing a complete blank, she threw down the pen and decided to leave it till tomorrow night. It wasn’t due until Monday anyway.
The storm was finally over and the moon once again took its throne in the sky. Still holding her throbbing shoulder, Matty collapsed on the bed and turned to the clock. It read 7:14, but Matty was already exhausted. She rolled over and closed her eyes.
She wasn’t asleep for more then ten minutes when she heard someone knock on the door. “Mat.” Said Chad’s voice kinder then he usually would have used it. Obviously he was still worried about his younger sister. “Mat, I’m ordering pizza. What do you want?”
Propping herself up on a shoulder she squinted at the door. Sleep had already built up on her eye lids. “Umm—just cheese. Thanks.” She said groggily.
She heard his heavy foot steps retreat away from the door a little too quickly. Smiling slightly to herself while trying to remember his face when she had told him about the iPod, Matty forced her legs over the side of the bed and lifted herself up. Rubbing away the sleep sand, she headed out the door, knowing full well that Chad wouldn’t remember to take care of Jeremy.
I’m losing my mind!
Matty pressed down the 'ok' button on her phone and sent the text to Karen. She slipped the thin black Razor under her pillow and tore another piece of crust off the pizza. Shoving it in her mouth she fell into the soft fluffy cushion. The ipod caught her eye once more and a strange thought came to her. What if the ipod never flew on its own? What if she had moved it?
It made sense…kind of. She had been craving her music when it came and many odd things had happened to her that day. Propping herself up on an elbow she raised her right hand and made a gesture as if to grab the ipod. Instead, she let her hand hover in mid air; ready to catch the ipod should it come rocketing towards her.
Staring intently at it she began thinking come, come, come. When it didn't move she said it out loud. “Come, come, come. COME HERE!” But the ipod remained where it was, looking as innocent and ordinary as anything else in the room.
But she didn't give up. That ipod had moved and she was going to find out how. Tossing her blond hair out of her face she decided to change the wording. “Ipod?” she tried. Then she laced them together. “Ipod, come. Ipod, come.”
She raised her voice till it was a near shout before stopping and lowering her arm, panting. Had she imagined it? It looked as though the ipod had moved about an inch closer to her. It had! The ipod was now hanging over the edge of the white towel.
Still panting as if she had run a mile, a smile spread across her face. I, her breath caught in her throat. I can move things.
A sudden burst of music tore Matty from her trans-like state and made her jump about a foot in the air. She looked around before realizing it was her phone. Taking it out from under the pillow she read her friends reply. Tell me tomorrow. Math test.
Matty snapped the phone shut and placed it again under the pillow. She looked back and the ipod and a sudden wave of depression came over her. The ipod had not moved. She had imagined it. The small black object sat centered on the towel right where she had left it before. Tired and slightly scared, Matty crawled under the covers and turned out the light. She was asleep before the clock tolled 8:30 without doing any homework at all.
The golden gate glowed in the florescent moonlight, making the world around it a hundred times brighter then it should be. The sky above the courtyard was cloudless and dotted with billions of stars, winking and twinkling as if laughing at a hidden joke.
She stood again alone in the garden, facing the hollow tree she so longed to reach. With a heavy sigh, she turned away to face the vine covered gate. A dark raven sat upon the fencing, its blood red feet wrapped around the silver rails. It ruffled its wings and cocked his ebony head as she looked its way.
Red eyes met indigo green. They gazed deep into each others eyes, hers questioning, his all-knowing.
Suddenly his wings spread wide, as if about to take flight, opened his sharp beak, and began screeching.
Beep! Beep! Beep!
