VERSE 1

She gave her heart away and went together
With the one she loved into the desert night
She never thought that one day he’d forget her
And not even leave a note to hold her tight
It never crossed her mind that he could hate her
Enough to go and leave her all alone
Two hours and a hundred phone calls later
She realized he wasn’t coming home
And somewhere in her tears, it was amusing
She thought as she fell down onto her knees
Some people think that it is so confusing
The way a heart that’s broken tends to freeze
She understood it as her world collapsed around her
Oh, but in those waters, she came up for air
Somehow, it seemed, the will to live had found her
And she whispered out a little poisoned prayer

CHORUS 1

Somebody listen to me
Someone, please, catch the tears
That fall onto my shaking fingers
Sadness lingers
In a dark cloud over me
Somebody give a damn about me
Someone, I’m begging, know I’m here
Reach out your arms to catch me as I fall
Please, if there’s anyone at all

VERSE 2

She kept on going, and she kept pretending
That everything was gonna be okay
She thought that she’d still get her happy ending
If she took it slowly, living day-to-day
She fell in love again with what he’d left her
With the one thing that could make it all worthwhile
When the time came, though, a cruel Fate had bereft her
Of the only thing left that could make her smile
This time, it looked like there was no misgiving
As those murky waters pulled her down
This time, it seemed, the will to go on living
Had got there just in time to see her drown
She closed her eyes as pain commenced to take her
Someplace that was far away from there
She wouldn’t go on, and they couldn’t make her
She smiled ‘round a little poisoned prayer

CHORUS 2

Nobody listened to me
No one ever caught the tears
That fell onto my shaking fingers
Still, it lingers
This dark cloud that’s over me
Nobody gave a damn about me
No one knew that I was there
No one even tried to break my fall
Oh, no, not anyone at all

OUTRO

Those who knew her wept for all her sorrows
And they wondered at the reason and the rhyme
Because, for her, there’d be no more tomorrows
That she could tackle, one day at a time
They put her in the ground in late November
As cold winds carried snow upon the air
And on her headstone, so they would remember
They engraved her little poisoned prayer
