Love’s War

Snake’s fingers touch my cheek

Just waiting to close around my throat

Sweet words whispered in my ear

Long to deafen me

Lips and teeth biting

Spread poison through words that I can’t understand

The war is coming—it’s worn on his sleeve.

The trapdoor closes on this open heart

The flames fall upon the carefully penned words

And the roses fly—shatter the window

Icy tears trace this face of stone

Chocolate hearts dirty her skin, strawberries stain the ground

As another tug races through her heart.

Screams tear through her

Not ones of ecstasy but of agony

As the war gives birth to triplets: Pain, Violence and Heartbreak

All within minutes of the other

Then all is silenced as they weep at the cross

A baptism of fire.

She stands at where his grave would grow

Stands in victory, the sword at his throat

A white rose is raised but she won’t have it

As she cuts the line, paints the rose with his blood

She’s had enough—the tyranny will end here

But since when was all fair in love’s war?
