Capítulo tres

I must have fainted from the shock or something. Because when I woke up I found myself lying down on a hospital bed, with four heads staring down at me. They were mum, Mike, Jack and the doctor.

“Doctor Smith, she’s awake.”

Another doctor came to look at me. He started shining bright lights in my eyes.

“Mamá, donde el Koi? (Mum, where’s Koi?)”

“Aquí. (Here)” She said handing me Koi. I took Koi in my hands and rubbed her soft fur over my face. I’m glad she’s a miniature Panda. So she’s able to fit in my pocket, easily.

I looked over to the other bed next to me. There was a girl sitting down. She was reading a book and must have noticed me looking at her. She turned to look at me. She looked quite scared but, she still smiled at me.

“Hi, I’m Zoë, whats your name?”

“Mi nombre es Bernita… (My name’s Bernita…)”

“Oh, cool you speak another language. Maybe we can be friends?” She seemed slightly forward, but she did look friendly.

“Okay, I’d like that.”

“Oh, you speak English too!” She exclaimed smiling.

“Uh-ha…” I answered.

“Bernita, por favor, dejar de hablar y descansar su voz. (Bernita, please stop talking and rest your voice.)” I just stared back at her angrily, I mean she wasn’t the one who had just found out she had cancer?

“Bernita, your mothers right, you need to rest your voice.” Mike joined in the conversation.

“I don’t recall asking for your opinion!” I snapped back at him.

“Sorry.” Mike answered bewildered.

All this time, Zoë was just staring at us, wide eyed.

A few minutes later Doctor Smith came in and asked to speak with mum and Mike.

“Espere, no me dejen la mama! (Wait, don't leave me mum!)”

“It’s ok I’ll be back soon.”

I slumped back in the bed and watched them walk away outside the ward. Jack was told to wait with me.

I turned back to Zoë and started a conversation. “How long have you been here?”

“About a month or so.”

“Does the treatment hurt?”

“I don’t want to scare you but, yes it does except-”

“Excuse me, Bernita? I am here too you know?” Jack interrupted Zoë.

“Excuse me; can’t you see I’m talking?”

“No not really.” He answered sarcastically.

“Don’t you think your step sister’s in enough pain right now?”

“Well, technically, she’s not my actual step-sister. Her mum and my dad aren’t married yet.”

“Who cares Jack, can you please just leave me alone?”

“No, I have a right to stay here.” I called a nurse over and told them what was happening and they took him else where. But, at that moment mum and Mike came back in followed by Doctor Smith. Once again mum looked like she had been crying (but, for some reason it seemed more like happy crying rather than sad crying). It was almost night so mum sat in the chair by my bed and Mike and Jack went home.

The hospital gave me so called rice with a variety of vegetables for dinner. It looked horrible but didn’t taste too bad.

Later on that night Mike came back to stay with me and mum. He had said Jack would be staying with his aunt and uncle for the time being.

After that I fell asleep, not knowing what would happen to me tomorrow when I woke up.
